ITAP of a Glowing Chandelier by Dale Chihuly at the V&A by samerfarhain itookapicture

[–]samerfarha[S] 0 points1 point ago

I was stunned to see this beauty hanging at the Victoria and Albert's Grand Entrance, and asked the staff of the information desk to let me behind it so I could shoot this shot, straight up. The Chandelier hangs directly over the desk.

My cast iron pan isn't staying seasoned. . . . by annahriin Cooking

This.

Also, if you put something cold with lots of proteins into a hot seasoned cast iron pan, it's going to stick like no one's business.

RAW vs. JPG. For the newbies, please pay attention. This convinced me to change, regarding the situation I was shooting in. by Pcurrencyin photography

Ahh, I see where we differ. My clients typically want a look at some proofs within a few days, not hours. So, yeah, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably shoot RAW+JPEG.

The 1024x1024 is what I output from Aperture just for the quick edit (so I'm not giving them huge files to deal with). After consulting with them, I then do a second edit, and then finally process those photos. I mostly shoot on the 7D.

This comment is going to get buried, but I want to point out there are a lot of good reasons to use JPEG. For photo journalists, especially wire journalists, they don't have the time to deal with processing RAW files. They also have limits on file size as they need to deliver from the field to an editing office, and from there to their distribution point. The amount of photos that a good paper or wire service takes in one day is overwhelming — saving them all, much less all as RAW, would be expensive and insanely difficult to catalog.

For my personal and client shooting, I shoot RAW. But even on my most active shoot, I've only shot around 500 photos a day. So in the trade off "quality vs size" sometimes "small size" wins and sometimes "best quality" wins. I'd argue that for artists, landscape photographers, and event photographers, RAW is a must. For news and studio photography (where you should have the time to set up properly) you don't need RAW, but you can use it once in a while.

Interesting. I shoot RAW, import, select the basic edit, then choose those pictures and output a 1024x1024 JPEG of them for the client. Doesn't really take that long of a time, but I don't have two shoots a day and five clients yelling at me to get them proofs.

What will it take for DC citizens to demand better performance from the Metro? by giamgiamin washingtondc

[–]samerfarha 1 point2 points ago

I respectfully disagree. I think the fares need to be as high as the market will bear. I do agree that we're getting very close to the edge, especially for riders from the outer suburbs. I'd personally like to see a flat fare or a zone system put in: $3 for any trip, or $2 for one zone, $3 for two, $4 for three (with zones being DC, inner suburbs, outer suburbs). Either proposal brings the price down for those at the edges, raises the rates on those nearest, and maybe sends some to the bus system. But, most importantly, it allows you not to raise rates every 1-2 years.

Journalists in the paddock will report the news (especially if they're working for the wire services), but they aren't being given free reign to the country and the people. Look at Alan Baldwin's coverage for Reuters, and you'll see that there are people reporting what's going on, but they'll be out of the country by Monday.

What will it take for DC citizens to demand better performance from the Metro? by giamgiamin washingtondc

[–]samerfarha 10 points11 points ago

Honestly, people are demanding it, but you've got a few institutional problems that prevent it from happening (at all, much less efficiently).

  • Metro has an ingrained culture of not giving a shit.
  • Metro doesn't have enough dedicated funding.
  • No one wants to pay more for the service.
  • Three jurisdictions (plus the Feds) competing for chest thumping bragging rights.

Essentially, the Metro board is Nero. And shit's burning up.

So, how can you change it? Demand higher fares. Call up and talk to your Metro board representative and demand they stop fucking about and start thinking of the long term health of the system. Call your congressman and local governments and demand more money (out of your pocket) for the system. Push hard for a change in the culture of the system.

None of these changes are easy. Neigh on impossible. So, at the end of the day, you have to hope that Sarles manages to push the fixing and maintenance of the system to the fore, and that things get better from there.

Honestly, I think we need a zone system or a flat rate. I know, yes, it probably means those closer to the city will pay more per mile than those far away. But they need to be able to have revenue they can count on, and which doesn't involve a fight about raising rates every year or two. But who here is willing, voluntarily, to call up their various representatives and ask to pay more?

I'm actually glad they didn't. The Enterprise, which I've seen many a time at the Air and Space, is practically new. It looks unused. I'm glad Discovery looks "grimy". There's historical value in that.

If you go back a bit in that photo stream, you'll see pictures of the mating process at KSC.

Beer Dinners: How Much Are You Willing to Pay? (Poll) by AllOverBeerin beer

Thanks for that. As a guy born in Lebanon, I'm a big fan of small plates shared around the table (mezze, tapas, etc), and so I hope this catches on in the US!

Beer Dinners: How Much Are You Willing to Pay? (Poll) by AllOverBeerin beer

I used to go to the Brickskeller beer tasting events all the time. They were around $30, and often included a little bit of food, and between 9-12 4-6oz tasters of beer. I felt that was a fair price for an evening out and usually good entertainment. I wouldn't call it a beer dinner.

I've been to other beer dinners, between $45-$80, and the value has been different. You get more beer at some, but fewer different beers. At others, you get bigger plates of food, etc.

The most expensive beer dinner I've been to was $150. It was a fundraiser and it was at Birch and Barley/Churchkey. I knew going in the food would be great and the beers would be fantastic, and neither disappointed. But, I don't know if I would have gone if it wasn't a fundraiser.
