Ilya Repin - Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1891) by beingandnothingnessin museum

Thanks! I'd never seen any of Repin's work before and I instantly love it. Also, thanks for supplying the context. This replaces my longstanding desktop wallpaper: Bruegel's The Beekeeper and The Birdnesters.

Excellent response! I'm glad I asked those questions and sad I didn't ask five or ten more!

I really like your technique of having the students think about the arrangement of the classroom in relation to power distribution. I'm particularly interested in rhetoric of place and how material constraints affect communication. This fits right in with that thinking. It also must be a very memorable example for your students that they can continue to apply to many different situations.

I also agree that the job of the composition teacher is not to define good versus bad writing, but then at the end of the semester we do have to provide a grade for each student. How do you negotiate that? Do you use rubrics or do you grade holistically? Some other technique?

Sounds like you've got some really interesting methods and that your students get the opportunity to cover some important topics.

What do the students gain by conceiving of writing as a technology? How does it help them write? I've been taught to help students conceive of writing as a public art, which serves to provide an audience and to allow them to think of the social constraints on writing, reading, and cognitive processes.

How do you draw attention to the power differential and then challenge them to throw off the imbalance? That sounds like an interesting technique, but I'm wondering about how and why you do it.

Bob Dylan Themed Hip Hop Album - Doing it Right? by SarsLipCompromisein bobdylan

[–]salpara 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I agree that you shouldn't just cover Dylan songs. But you've done something really creative with the way you sample them. Couldn't you do something similar with the vocals? You could possibly intertwine lines from Bob's songs into themes that are more suitable for rap. Think of it as a contemporary fix.

Just an idea, but as a songwriting exercise you could even take Dylan lyrics and remove three out of four lines per stanza, which you would then fill in with your own lyrics sticking to his rhyming scheme or something like that. That would allow you to sample in his voice on those key lines and have a sort of harmonizing effect going on.

Of course, it's your art and you do what you want with it. These ideas are just what sound good in my own head, but maybe in yours too.

I like the intro and the Dylan samples, but the rapping itself doesn't do it for me. I thought I was going to hear Dylan-inspired lyrics and was looking forward to that, but the lyrics come across as uninspired prototypical rap. I'd stick with the sampling and do rap versions of Dylan songs. As it is, the sampling and the rapping seem totally disconnected.

Sounds great! I'll be sure to let you know. I normally have to mix my trips with visits with my family so I tend to just be able to fish half-days starting at sunup. It'd be great to be shown some new spots though. I only know a couple good ones that don't have such heavy traffic.

Strangely enough, my dad lives within walking distance from Walnut Creek access, but neither of us have ever fished it because of the crowding.

No kidding? Then with this mild winter, I should be getting my ass up there. One of these weekends coming up I'm going to make the trip if there's a possibility of hooking one of those big suckers.

I got skunked my last two times out on Elk (early January). There just didn't seem to be very many fish and that made me figure the season was just about over.

Do you ever fish for steelhead in Ohio? My friend who has been at it way longer than me goes there just as much as he does PA.

I'm in Pittsburgh, but like I said my family lives in Erie so I'm there fairly often.

Sounds like you've got it figured out! I'm looking forward to honing my skill next season. It's too late now to get any, isn't it?

My school is also dominated by the sciences, but we are encouraged to teach our students to use the personal pronoun. Our freshman writing class is called Interpretation and Argument and is designed to get them to analyze and make arguments. We specifically encourage them to use "I" in metacommentary, even if their audience is a scientific one. Despite this, we get a lot of resistance from the students who have been taught all through high school that "I" has no place in "objective" writing.

I think your solution is a really good one, to bring it back to the context of the writing and to get them to question the situation itself. I have one-to-one conferences with my students this week and might use this if any of them have questions about the subject. Thanks for your input!

I just started steelheading this season and had a blast with it. I'm from there, but had never gone out for them. Now I live a couple hours away. Since I started flyfishing though, I decided I needed to give it a shot any time I was back visiting the family. I only managed to catch three, but I at least had one on each time I went out. Next season I'll be better prepared.

What were your flies of choice, if you don't mind me asking? I had success with blood dots, san juan worms, and senyo wiggle stones.

Sure, but the entire Erie Canal area isn't included in that proposed state. Seems ridiculous to name a state Erie that doesn't touch the lake or the city.

I wonder what the justification is for giving the name Erie to Western Ohio. The proposed state doesn't even touch Lake Erie nor does it include the city of Erie, PA.

What are your thoughts on the increase in use of the personal pronoun in academic writing? I see from the preview of your book that you advocate against its use. At my school, we're encouraged to teach that using "I" in academic writing is an acceptable move and that it even helps an argumentative text.

Are guns really that essential for you and your EDC? by ProMapexin EDC

[–]salpara 0 points1 point ago

That is one of the strangest analogies I've ever seen. "Scary words" versus handguns? I don't even understand what argument you're trying to make.

The difference between handguns and hunting weapons is their portability. Of course I understand that humans can be killed just as easily with hunting weapons. What distinguishes them is that one type stays at home because they're too large to be carried on your person, which greatly decreases the likelihood that people will kill each other in a moment of rage.
