I let my beagle dig in one area of the yard, but scold him when he digs elsewhere. He eventually figured out that this spot was OK to dig and stopped digging everywhere else in the yard. The Itron meters use a 900MHz and a 2.4GHz radio to form a mesh with the other smart meters. The mesh is connected to the utility wirelessly. There is actual two-way communication between the utility and the meter. Some devices (like air conditioners) can be controlled remotely by the utility to help manage peak electricity usage.

Most of the "home area network" devices coming out also work in the 2.4GHz range. The most troubling one may the smart electric meters that utilities are installing. Entire neighborhoods are being saturated at 2.4GHz by these devices with the potential to cause even more interference.
