Need help staying accountable on keto... by thelongjourneyin keto

[–]romple 1 point2 points ago

You have to learn to rely on yourself and be your own coach.

I used to grab my fat rolls and jiggle it around a lot if I got tempted. Now I don't have any fat rolls to jiggle. Eventually you just enjoy being thinner more than you enjoy a cannoli, but you have to learn to build that discipline.

And TBH being able to cheat occassionally is healthy for many of us (at least emotionally, which is important). If you have the mindset "I'll never enjoy a cannoli again" (i really like cannolis) it'll be harder to resist than if you think "I'll have a canoli, just not this week".

Well... there's also us. Put down that cannoli bro! Just put it down!

Q. Does eating 1g of net carbs a day cause you to lose more weight than eating 19g of net carbs a day? by TTCorein keto

[–]romple 1 point2 points ago

and amino acids. It's that last one you don't want. That means you're breaking down your muscles and liver. So we eat a few carbs and let those digest to glucose instead.

You're not wrong at all. But if you eat enough protein your body should never resort to breaking down muscle tissue.

I played true normal, nightmare and 3/4 Hell in Diablo 3. That's it? by Donvito293in truegaming

[–]romple 5 points6 points ago

That's not strictly true.

Getting random groups of 4 attribute mobs in inferno is intense. You get some combinations that seem legitimately impossible. The act bosses may not be new, but they're not why people who will play D3 for 5+ years are playing.

It's the blue/yellow packs that are the main feature for the most part. And those are generated randomly. So in a sense there's always new content.... or at least different content.

PlanetSide 2 MMO FPS free-to-play by AllTheseApplesin MLPGaming

[–]romple 1 point2 points ago

There was some discussion below and some people seem confused with what Planetside is. It's an MMO, but not an RPG. It's a FPS, but not like CoD/Battlefield.

The world's split up into territories controlled by 1 of 3 factions. There are bases, outposts, and more importantly resources. You control territories to control resources in order to fuel your war. You have a character that gains levels and has skills and attributes like in an RPG. But combat is that of a FPS, with various types of land and air vehicles to utilize.

The world is persisted and is very large. You can expect thousands of players together per server.

The beauty of Planetside is that there are 3 factions. I'd reference you to Dark Age of Camelot, which was an MMORPG centered on PvP between 3 factions. That's the only real game that had a similar dynamic. The simple fact that there are 3 factions competing with each other introduces levels of complexity that really make the game unique.

Alliances pop up and disappear in an instant. I remember nights in DAoC where we had a tentative alliance formed with one realm to jointly take objectives from the 3rd realm, only to see our alliance crumble in a sudden twist of treachery that saw us scrambling back to our own realm in order to defend it. Or pinning one realm against a wall, thinking you have them completely under control, only to see a massive swarm of the 3rd realm swoop in at your back, sandwiching you between two enemy armies.

War between 3 realms brings such an intense experience that you really need to be part of to understand. I played both games very intensely and can tell you the experience is really something else. The level of cooperation between good Guilds/Outfits is amazing and something you'll never get in CoD/BF.

I can't tell you things will work exactly in PS2, but in DAoC I remember nights leading or being in an army of 200+ people all marching on an enemy keep to capture a Relic - which was a heavily protected item that granted combat bonuses to the realm that controlled it. It's an incredible feeling. I'm hoping PS2 captures that same feeling again.

Sorry for the wall of text... DAoC was most enjoyable experiences in gaming, and Planetside a close second. Brought out a bit of nostalgie in me.

[HELP] fadeIn() and fadeOut() by Spamsationalin jquery

[–]romple 0 points1 point ago

Yes I copied/paste your code, threw in some images it and worked fine.

To see if jQuery's loaded correctly, try using

console.log(jQuery);

or

console.log($);

and then opening the dev console in chrome or firebug in firefox. You should see

function ( selector, context ) {
        // The jQuery object is actually just the init constructor 'enhanced'
        return new jQuery.fn.init( selector, context, rootjQuery );
    }

You can try just linking to one of the CDNs on http://docs.jquery.com/Downloading_jQuery#CDN_Hosted_jQuery.

It works for me. Are you sure you have jQuery in the right place?

And you can use

$('.btn1').text("Close Curtains");

anywhere or inside your click() function

$('this').text("Close Curtains");

Reading JavaScript: The Good Parts to brush up on my skills. by with_explosionsin learnprogramming

[–]romple 1 point2 points ago

toString(base) is used to convert to a different base system. for instance, 2555.toString(16) would equal FF. Or 255.toString(8) would equal 377.

They write '#FFFF' + hex + hex because level runs from 1 to 15, so 1 to F in hex. They add it twice so they get '#FFFFXX' instead of just '#FFFFX'.

I love the "mortality rate" thing. It's such a pointless stat.

You know what has a 100% mortality rate? Being alive.

Any "study" that cites "increased mortality" is probably not a very good one.

Wil Wheaton Reminds Us That Torrents Are Awesome, And Not Just For Pirated Movies by DrJulianBashirin technology

[–]romple 1 point2 points ago

So everyone, gamer or not, is aware of Diablo's launch issues.

I had the downloader running all night and woke up to see it 17%... dejected, I hit up my private tracker site and downloaded the ISO in about a half hour.

The odd part is Blizzard uses, I believe torrents, as well as direct download from their servers.

But in any case... If I used a public tracker I'm sure I'd be labeled as a "thief" and thrown as a +1 in the "1 download = 1 lost sale" category. In reality I used the swarm to compensate for Blizzard's rough launch. And I helped them out by taking a bit of load off their download servers...

It was always an illusion of customization... This just dawned on me after complaining about the lack of customization.. by Gacntin diablo3

[–]romple 2 points3 points ago

This is basically the same argument that's been happening with WoW.

Basically as long as you have +5% type talents you'll always fall into min-maxing. Old style skill trees are going to die out because they're all basically the same exercise in finding the most optimal build, with very few variation.

Playing D3 beta made me less apprehensive about the WoW skill system change. It's the same thing really. And I really like what Blizzard's doing in moving away from 'classic' style talent trees. I'm sure theyl'l iterate on it more, but it is nice to judge what to take based on situation and playstyle.

How do text programmers view LabVIEW programmers? by Daimonesin learnprogramming

[–]romple 1 point2 points ago

TL;DR - your job experience is likely a turnoff for a development position, make sure you have good projects on there that show you know what you're doing.

I'd get out as soon as possible. I'm guessing you're a test engineer, by title or not. The longer you do LabVIEW/Test/QA work the harder it is to get out of it.

From discussions I've had with managers of other departments where I work, if they get resumes from test or quality engineers for development positions they put them on the bottom of the list. I think it's an unfair bias, but it's a prevalent one.

We're pretty much in the same boat. I'm trying to strengthen my java/c++ skills and working on personal projects that can show I can actually write code.

If you apply to a company that isn't an engineering firm, they probably won't even know what it is. (I've been asked what it is very often). But the lack of things they're familiar with tends to turn them off ("so you don't write java/c++/c/whatever at work?"). If you apply to an engineering company and have LabVIEW as the prominent skill, they tend to overlook you since it's not "real design" - which is arguably bullshit.

I was told when I took my first job in Test that it's a good gateway to development. But even after applying for entry level engineering positions I hear "lack of design experience" so much it makes me cry. I've given up on hardware. And I've accepted the fact I may need to accept a position a bit junior to what I do now, in title and salary, to get out of Test.

I don't want to be too doomy on you. But I've been sinking into this black hole for over 5 years now and it just gets harder to get out. I'd decide RIGHT NOW what you want to do as a career and then figure out how to do that.

The benefit of software is you can do a lot on your own that will make you marketable. Even if it's embedded stuff. So since your job experience is likely a turnoff for a development position, make sure you have good projects on there that show you know what you're doing.

Schedules. by alexl1in learnprogramming

[–]romple 0 points1 point ago

I don't set time schedules, but objectives.

For instance if I'm at work and see people talk about binary search trees, I might say "when I get home I'm going to implement a binary search tree". I don't know if that'll take an hour or 4. But I generally get home, eat dinner, and work until I can compile and run a demo of a BST.

If I say "I'm going to spend 4 hours learning when I get home!" it really doesn't do me any good. It may do YOU good. But not me. So I like to just set a goal and go from there.
