What's the funniest censored-for-tv line from a movie you've heard? by sumshin AskReddit

[–]robingallup 0 points1 point ago

From Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Original: "Pardon my French, but Cameron's so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal up his ass, in two weeks you'd have a diamond."

TV Edit: "Pardon my French, but Cameron's so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal in his fist, in two weeks you'd have a diamond."

Funniest part is that the edited voice saying "in his fist" sounds nothing like Ferris Bueller.

What is the most soul crushing thing you've ever had to do? by TinyDancer1221in AskReddit

TL;DR I had to refuse to give a woman medication that could have saved her mother from dying of a brain tumor.

I worked in a clinical trials call center, where people respond to ads from Big Pharma, trying to get into a study for a drug that is not yet FDA-approved. We would pre-screen them based on certain criteria, then refer them to a doctor participating in the study if they were eligible.

Most of these drugs were bio-oncology related, so I was typically speaking with people who were dying of cancer and hoping to get access to a new drug that might be able to help them, after standard cancer treatments had failed.

One day, a woman called on behalf of her mother, who had an inoperable brain tumor. Her mother had already been in a clinical trial for a drug in our pipeline. During the study, her mother's tumor began shrinking rapidly for the first time in years of treatment. But her mother also developed a significant blood clot in her lung while on the new drug, which the doctor deemed a significant hazard, and she was no longer allowed to participate in the study.

This woman asked me how she could get her mother into another clinical trial. Unfortunately, having been excluded from the first study, there was no way I could qualify her for another one (this was a primary exclusion criteria). When I explained this, the woman asked how they could go about purchasing the drug themselves. As the drug was not yet FDA-approved, I had to tell her that there was no way whatsoever that we could sell, or even give, the drug outside the context of a clinical trial.

She responded, "So, what you're telling me is that you have a drug that you and I both know is my mother's ONLY chance at surviving her brain tumor — you actually have this drug in your company's possession — but you're refusing to give it to me, knowing that my mother will die without it?"

And I had to tell her that, as sorry as I felt about it, there was nothing I could do to help her. She hung up sobbing, and I never felt so horrible in my entire life. This was six years ago, and it haunts me to this day.

Why don't "conservatives" believe that "big government" stay out of marriage altogether? by vgrinberin politics

[–]robingallup 0 points1 point ago*

TL;DR Some of us do.

There are still some of us conservatives, believe it or not, who embrace the ideals that originally defined Republicanism, not this egocentric, grandstanding, self-righteous monstrosity that has completely bastardized what being a Republican involves.

If we're going to call ourselves a party established on the platform of liberty, it makes zero sense to go around saying, "this person can get married, this person can't." There is no basis to justify something like a "Defense of Marriage Act" on purely Republican principles, and I wish that the prominent politicians calling themselves Republican would quit acting like denying of basic rights to parts of the population is somehow a responsibility inherent to Republicanism. In fact, it should be quite the opposite.

Take a look at these snippets from the Republican Oath.

I believe that the proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done but cannot be done, or cannot be done as well by individuals, and that the most effective government is closest to the people.

So how, then, did we Republicans get the idea that adults are unable to determine, free from government interference, who they want to marry? This is something that individuals can and should do themselves. The very idea of the government imposing itself upon the rights of the individual, particularly in something so significant as the decision of one's spouse, should be offensive to true Republicans.

I believe that good government is based on the individual and that each person’s ability, dignity, freedom and responsibility must be honored and recognized.

I checked over and over, and no matter how hard I try, I can't find anything in there that says "unless the person is gay."

I believe in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, age, sex, or national origin. I believe that persons with disabilities should be afforded equal rights, equal justice, and equal opportunity as well.

So how in the hell did "all" become "some?" How did "equal" become "equal for the majority, while oppressive to the minority?"

I believe we must retain those principles worth retaining, yet always be receptive to new ideas with an outlook broad enough to accommodate thoughtful change and varying points of view.

I think it would be fair to say that, particularly among Western civilization, there has been a substantial change (over the past three decades especially) in the cultural mindset having to do with marriage on a number of levels, not just with regard to same-sex marriage. But where is the accommodation of thoughtful change and varying points of view? Instead, it's all "hurr-durr-destroyin-Merica." There is total obstinacy and a flat-out refusal to budge. Real Republicans should have no problem discussing the issue thoughtfully, while being open to the need to change their minds.

I believe that Americans value and should preserve their feeling of national strength and pride, and at the same time share with people everywhere a desire for peace and freedom and the extension of human rights throughout the world.

Words like "strength," "pride," "peace," "freedom," and "human rights" aren't just convenient buzzwords to throw around at opportune moments. They're ideals to be embraced. And yet, at every turn, I feel like the bigots masquerading as our most prominent Republicans are working AGAINST the freedom, the rights, the pride, of a growing segment of the population that refuses to be marginalized.

Conservatives should, and some of us still do, believe that Big Government should stay out of marriage altogether. Regardless of what I think as to the morality (as defined personally, based on my own beliefs) of gay marriage, the government should not pick and choose who can marry and who can't. That entire mode of thinking is ANTI-Republican.

The modern Republican Party is not Republican. It is a party that has abandoned its ideals, that cares little for liberty, that embraces bigotry, and that completely contradicts at every turn (and with the most unbelievable hypocrisy) the foundations that the party itself is supposed to uphold.

I dropped my Republican affiliation several elections ago and have simply been a registered "independent," but that's not enough for me any more. I want my political party reclaimed from the high-dollar, bottom-line-focused, special interests that have absolutely sabotaged and undermined it. I want the Real Republican Party back.

I visited Eleuthera a little over a decade ago and was completely entranced by the beauty of the whole area. Here are my questions.

  1. Are you from Nassau or elsewhere? What's your perception of the differences between people who are born and raised in the tourism-saturated islands versus those who grow up in some of the other less-known, less-visited islands?

  2. Why do people who actually live in the Bahamas seem largely disinterested in swimming or otherwise enjoying the water? It seemed like all the ones in the water are white people, or tourists, or both. And truly, it was one of the best swimming and snorkeling experiences of my life. In Eleuthera, where tourism is minimal, I had first assumed it might be the fact that so many locals are fishermen and might equate the water with the workplace. Is that it? Is it a stereotypical black-people-hate-swimming thing? Something else? To me, having such gorgeous water and refusing to swim in it seemed like having a Ferrari that never leaves the garage.

  3. It seemed like everyone we met who lived in the Bahamas was pretty devoutly religious, mostly some form of Christianity. Was that true for you growing up? Either way, how have your thoughts on things like faith or religion been impacted while studying in Europe where more of society tends to be more on the post-religious side?

  4. Short of hopping a plane and going back to the Bahamas, how on earth can I get my hands on some Junkanoo Champagne soda in the mainland US? I have scoured the internet and found nothing in terms of suppliers. I would do horrible things to get a kind Bahamian to ship me some.

I've got a little story about my church.... by GoSomaliPiratesin Christianity

[–]robingallup 0 points1 point ago

Youth pastor here. I see our church reaching this point over the next decade. I am hoping to help facilitate this, but hopefully in such a way that it doesn't completely lose the older generation as well. Anyone have tips on how to change the minds of people who have grown complacent and view church as their own little country club? I just don't like the idea of them wandering off, old and bitter, feeling like the church they were part of for so long abandoned them in the process of change. Rather, I would like to see them experience the joy of making a difference for people, just like OP's church is doing. I realize that ultimately, it's up to each individual whether they choose to stay and be a part of what God is doing, and I understand there are inevitably going to be casualties along the way. But is it worth trying to minimize the fallout as well, if it can be done without sacrificing the progress?

TIL that Slash from the band Guns N' Roses refuses to allow "Glee" to use the band's music because he thinks the show sucks. by DaNuke96in todayilearned

[–]robingallup 0 points1 point ago

Why do they need Slash's permission? Maybe I am understanding Compulsory License law incorrectly, but I thought that so long as they pay the appropriate licensing fees, anybody can cover anyone else's songs. It would be a different story if they were using his actual recordings, but in theory, I (or anyone) could cover any previously released Guns N' Roses song on my own CD as long as I pay the standard licensing fee to the copyright holder.

I know that some artists, by their own choice, will not cover a song without the "blessing" of the original musician. First example that comes to mind is Weird Al. But I don't think it's necessarily a legal issue, just more a matter of personal policy. Is that what's going on with Glee?

I'm not a fan of Glee, but I don't see any provision that would exclude them from using any mainstream song just because the artist doesn't like the cover band.

AMA Request: A well known Pastor, like John MacArthur, John Piper, Paul Washer, maybe even Mark Driscoll... by one_for_my_husbandin Christianity

[–]robingallup 0 points1 point ago

Driscoll aside, I was just glad to know what you were referencing. I only had a vague awareness of John Maxwell until about two months ago. He came to my small town and did a training for about 40 healthcare managers, and as they held the training at the church where I work, I had the opportunity to sit in and listen. The whole session was based around his 5 Levels book. Got to meet him briefly and he gave me a copy as a gift, which I'm currently reading for the second time.

I can't imagine Mark Driscoll taking the time to answer individual questions in a forum where he can't videotape it and sell it as curriculum.

TIL a real life replica of The Simpsons' house was built, in which the winner of a Fox contest could eventually live by GilbertMin todayilearned

Most of the house's original interior looked like it would be headache-inducing if you were to actually live there.

That is, except for this bedroom which makes me want to remodel my daughters' bedroom to look like this. What little girl wouldn't fall in love with that.

I don't know that the house would have been ideal as a residence, but it seems like you could use it as an amazing tool for an entrepreneurial venture. What a waste that they changed it all.
