Layoffs hit EA's Vancouver branch by G1ovesin vancouver

[–]riplin 4 points5 points ago

EA has never really been great a keeping employee's.

The funny thing is, sometimes it's more like a forced vacation. They lay you off and a couple months later they hire you again. :S

ELI5 - Why is it bad for money to have a fixed value over time? by Halftonefrankin explainlikeimfive

[–]riplin 1 point2 points ago

Exactly. If they're not sure of that, that tells me enough about their 'investment opportunities'.

ELI5 - Why is it bad for money to have a fixed value over time? by Halftonefrankin explainlikeimfive

[–]riplin 1 point2 points ago

I'm OK with not giving me a guaranteed return (sorry, should have made that more explicit in my post). What pisses me off is that they charge me money 'guaranteed' yet can't promise me a return. I feel that things like this should be more like how some lawyers operate. No cure no pay.

You say you can make a profit using my money? OK. Here's my money, you try to make a profit and of that profit you can take X%. If they did really poorly, I expect the opposite to be true too. You lost me X% of my investment, so I expect you to cough up %Y of that.

It doesn't get any more fair than that. You say you've got the expertise, and I have the money. I give you the money, you work your magic. If you lose me money, then I expect you to suffer along with me and not walk away from this scot free.

For me personally I'm not investing in anything because every time I look into it, I get the feeling that the company that's offering me an investment plan is trying to scam me out of my money.

And even if I don't get that feeling, the monthly / yearly fees are absolutely ridiculous. It's my money dammit, why the fuck do I have to pay you fees for you to invest it? Promise me an X return and anything over that is yours. Don't try to cover your ass with fees. If you aren't performing then I'm not going to fucking pay for your services.

Why Apple TV is finally starting to matter by ronaldvansiklein apple

[–]riplin 1 point2 points ago

My internet enabled TV and Xbox has a significantly greater variety of capability of playback compared to an AppleTV.

Those devices probably cost you more than $99 though.

Page-flipping interface prototype (vid) by realfacts2in apple

[–]riplin 0 points1 point ago

If you look at the demo's they gave during the introduction, their page navigation makes a lot more sense. Small pages at the bottom that you can scroll through to find the page you are looking for and a bigger preview at the top that can expand to full screen. Nothing like the video up top where you have to remember different gestures, risk flipping too far, etc.

The Wikipedia SOPA black out has begun. by r0ck0in pics

It's not blacked out in Canada (and I'm guessing other countries are unaffected too). So it's nice to that people from other countries can also see what it looks like.

As I get older I pirate less and am willing to pay for more. Is this common of adults on reddit? by mcweedenin AskReddit

[–]riplin 0 points1 point ago

For me somewhat.

When it comes to movies, I like owning the highest possible quality copy that's available, and that's currently blu-ray. I still rip them and make iTunes versions of them, but I just like owning the HQ version. Same goes for series. I just want to own them. So I'll download / watch the current season and when it's out on blu-ray, I'll buy it.

Also, my internet is capped to 250GB/mo so that helps too.

Music not so much. I'm not spending another dime on music ever again. Same goes for concerts. I'm not going to pay ticket master's exorbitant fees.

I don't play video games, so I don't pirate those, and I pretty much don't need much software so I'm not pirating that either. I haven't jailbroken any of my mobile devices either. The sub $10 prices that they ask for games / apps just isn't worth the effort.
