Media over-hyping Bradley? by mreyes89in Boxing

[–]ricardotown 0 points1 point ago

He's done more to earn a shot than Margarito or Mosley did.

Bradley is a good champ at 140, and he handed Peterson and Alexander their first losses, which are good notches on the belt.

ShoBox by eddie1337in Boxing

[–]ricardotown 3 points4 points ago

Showtime has 2 different boxing shows. One is Showtime Championship Boxing. That's where you get big fights like Ortiz-Berto II, and it usually airs on saturday nights, in competition with HBO. The other show is ShoBox, which is like ESPN2 FNF. That's why they dont have big names, but they do very often have very good fights.

Some of the best fights you'll see are between two guys you've never heard of. I remember when I stumbled onto Showtime right as Vazquez-Marquez I was getting underway. What a treat for me.

Alright, /r/boxing, let's play matchmaker. What are the interesting fights you would make given the opportunity to do so? by Tayto2000in Boxing

Yeah didn't he just get kicked out of Manny's camp? I imagine this is slightly spite-fueled.

OFFICIAL REDDIT P4P VOTING (MARCH 2012) by revolta15in Boxing

[–]ricardotown 0 points1 point ago

This was a month ago, long before the banned substance stuff came up.

Regardless of controversy, Khan has a 2nd loss on his ledger to Lamont Peterson. The fact that the contest was even competitive suggests that maybe Khan shouldn't be placed above such dominant forces like Andre Ward.

Floyd Patterson was pure class in the boxing ring and fought using the same peekaboo style used by Mike Tyson. Soak it in Reddit. by lincolnwithamulletin Boxing

[–]ricardotown 0 points1 point ago

In the case of Tyson, I thought nearly everyone outweighed him.

Except for Holyfield... and Holyfield wasn't really a power puncher either.

I don't think Douglas was particularly known for his power either.

What are you're opinions of the future of boxing? by muggyrooster177in Boxing

Yeah the WSB wasn't entirely amateur and it wasn't entirely pro.

I think if they made a boxing league (like UFC) with a good size of fighters all under one umbrella fighting each other, they might be able to build some rivalries and names and ultimately get enough money to get some good fighters.

Think of a league filled with lower tier but still fun guys like... Randall Bailey and Nate Campbell and so on. Basically a Friday Night Fights caliber league. Could be fun stuff.

Right, these problems with boxing aren't lost on boxing fans. Real boxing fans kind of mitigate it in their minds, though.

After you follow the sport enough, you typically see all these faces and hear all these names. You read the story of a fighter long before they enter the ring, so you know whether or not to cheer.

As for titles, there is no real, physical championship... and that's the way it should be. The Championship is a historical thing that should be traceable back as far as we go (into the bareknuckle era). This is a good thing, because it puts the true championship beyond tampering, tinkering, sanctioning and stripping.

Sergio Martinez is THE Middleweight champion. Anyone who follows boxing will pick up in that fact in no time when they see how everyone talks about JCC, Jr.'s need to fight him (even though Martinez, as of now, holds no physical titles).

All these extra belts, and even the once hallowed Ring Magazine belt, are all cancer to the sport now.

They kind of did recently, but they didn't market it correctly at all, and they didn't really play up the fighters. I think it was all run from China, too.

Do as many drugs as you want, there's not a drug that will make you smarter than Floyd Mayweather.

The thing I love about boxing is that styles make fights, and the sport comes down to a lot more than physical prowess.

Look at BHop. He's not fast and he's not strong, but somehow he gave one of the pound for pound best and fastest fighters (Dawson) fits.

Boxing's got a lot of mentality that drugs won't help.

It's been touched on a bit here, but the big thing that I'll admit that UFC has over Boxing is that UFC has a middle class.

This is incredibly healthy for the sport, and you get better fights as a result, as middle class fighters, earning middle class wages, are willing to fight other, equally skilled middle class fighters.

Boxing has a very disparate distribution of money, with the .01% like Floyd and Pacquiao... and that's about it at the top. A few Al Haymon HBO fighters might clear some million dollar pay days, but the reality is that 99.9% of boxers can't quit their day job. This is unfortunate.

We must recognize, though, that UFC is not a sport. It's an organization (like the WBC, or WBA, or WBO, etc) that just so happens to have a near monopoly on the mixed martial arts arena. One corporation acts as promoter, sanctioning body, and match maker. It's been good for the sport so far, as it has a key entity that is interested in the long term health of the sport, rather than short term profits (like Bob Arum is with Pacquiao, etc).

Can Boxing have this, too? I'm not sure. And I'm also not sure if I want it. As much as we all complain and hate, boxing (when blatant corruption is avoided) obviously runs itself well enough to keep us entertained. And, although Pac-May isn't happening, and we never saw Khan-Bradley, we are getting plenty of spectacular fights and important match-ups. Why? Because boxing fans hold the real power.

Boxing fans subscribe to HBO, and in doing so, it's a vote of confidence saying "we trust you (HBO) to make the right fights." It's a more capitalist, natural construction as opposed to UFC, and while it can run amok, like it seems to be recently, it also can surprise us magnificently.

Why are you only watching Floyd's (masterful) defense and not his insanely fast and precise punching?

Or maybe it's just that MMA's strikes are more apparent. Not necessarily a bad thing.

More disciplines doesn't necessarily mean more difficult. If you're 98% competent in boxing, then that last 2% is pretty rough, and you gotta work your ass off to make sure you cover more of that 2% than the guy you're fighting.

MMA on the other hand is a bit more rock paper scissors. If you got a guy who has great stand-up game, then can focus all your stand up on defense, adn then just make sure that your ground game is better than his. In other words, if he has 90% competency in stand up, but a 60% ground game competency, then you really only have to make sure you cover over that 60% competency in ground game, and enough stand up defense to avoid getting into that kind of fight.

This. Boxing is actually growing on the world scale.

Basically, if a Great Depression, two World Wars, and a Cold War can't stop boxing, I doubt anything can.

Now that The Ring has lost its legitimacy (new lineal rules and Pac & May are ranked #2), which rankings do you guys respect? by crises052in Boxing

[–]ricardotown 0 points1 point ago

I'm starting to look towards Yahoo's more... but Nigel Collins was such a strong supporter of legitimate rankings, I might have to start looking at ESPN's rankings if he has any say in them.

It would be fun to try and make some Reddit rankings for each weigh class (maybe combine a few of the Jr and Super classes), but I'm afraid that too many of the Flomos/Pactards would skew the results.

But, really, that'd only mess up welterweight, which is a pretty volatile division anyways.

[–]ricardotown 2 points3 points ago

I don't like all the tinkering with a system that wasn't broken to begin with. The idea of a vacant #1 position on the p4p rankings smacks of ABC idiocy and indecisiveness.

And this crap about how "we don't have enough champions... so let's make it easier to become champion" is pretty preposterous. The Ring Championship was significant because it was so rare and difficult to obtain. Now, The Ring Belt is just a trinket given out by schmucks who aren't even smart enough to get a sanctioning fee when parading around their silly belt.

Canelo Alvarez, amount of wins? by winedinethen69in Boxing

[–]ricardotown -1 points0 points ago

Throw in the caliber of opponent and we still have an argument as to his training regiment being less strenuous than Mayweather's. It's known that he was given a large amount of fodder in order to make up for a lack of amateur career.

Canelo Alvarez, amount of wins? by winedinethen69in Boxing

[–]ricardotown 1 point2 points ago

Mayweather turned pro at 18, and Canelo turned pro at 15.

I believe somewhere around Mayweather's 19th fight, he started fighting championship (12-round) fights. Legally, fighters are only allowed to engage in a certain amount of rounds per month, and its a lot more taxing to prepare for a 12 round fight than a 4 round fight.

So, conceivably, while Mayweather was fighting 12 round fights from fights 19 to 43, Canelo would be fighting 4 round fights from his first to about his 30th fight.

The cotto of last night would do well against Canelo, and it'd be another great PR vs. Mexico war.
