I made a million dollar bet to myself that it was going to be AKB48 right before I clicked the link. I'll write myself an IOU.

TIL Asian Bees kill hide invaders by forming a pile-up and roasting them with their body heat by mbacon101in todayilearned

[–]relic2279 0 points1 point ago

It's definitely just formality. :) We usually allow reposts with the exception of extreme circumstances like this, where the reposts are just hours apart.

My comment was actually more geared for the other mods - who might wonder why this post was removed. It's essentially a little 'note' as to why I removed it (accountability). It's really the only way we can leave notes. I do apologize for the inconvenience however.

This is what the movie "In the Realm of the Senses" was based on. It apparently was quite controversial because it contains scenes of unsimulated sexual activity. It's a Criterion Classic. It also might be the first porno based on a 'true story'. Just make sure you skip the last 15 minutes if you decide to watch it.

Not much, as it's contaminated with impurities, acids, oil and so forth.

TIL: Stealing copper from an Air Conditioning unit carries a mandatory 5 year federal prison sentence, plus a $250,000 dollar fine. by zzyzzxzzyxin todayilearned

[–]relic2279 4 points5 points ago

This is more about letting the refrigerant escape into the atmosphere than the actual theft. If you see someone venting the refrigerant into the air, instead of using a recovery container, they're subject to the same sentence/fine (and if you can prove it, you get the 10k reward). Though, I've been doing HVAC for years and I've yet to hear of a single instance of someone getting busted for this.

I imagine if the thief was using a recovery container to reclaim the refrigerant first, he'd be exempt from the harsher federal charges.

TIL that Hatsune Miku, a Japanese pop star that sells out stadiums, is a singing hologram by Ass_Kickain todayilearned

Article is a little dated. Miku has some growing popularity in the US and has performed to a sold out crowd at the Nokia Theater in LA.

The Japan Times Speaks to Perfume About Their Plans for a Global Future by Matsuo-Kaitoin japanesemusic

[–]relic2279 0 points1 point ago

they don't sing on stage. At all.

There are a couple performances that you can find on youtube where they sing live & aren't autotuned. Granted, it was likely a one-off type thing, but they have done live (non lip-synched) performances before.

Normally I can't stand lip-syncing (or autotune) but I think with Perfume, it's required. It's their 'hook' and it defines them as a group. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be around without it.

fuck Japanese record labels and their short-sightedness.

The popularity of Japanese music stars seems (IMO) to be shorter than in the rest of the world (on average), I'm not sure if that's a cause or an effect of that short-sightedness. I almost want to say the former as fads in Japan also seem to have a very short shelf life.

Colt McCoy 'working harder than ever' to keep job - NFL.com by aPersonOfInterestin Browns

[–]relic2279 1 point2 points ago

He had the best receiver in the BCS.

Serious question, I don't follow College football at all: Could a little bit of that success he experienced be attributed to how good Weeden is at quarterback? I mean, it stands to reason that if Weeden was a horrible quarterback, Blackmon wouldn't have looked nearly as good. Blackmon is a great receiver either way (with or without Weeden) but I think (hope for our sake) their chemistry and talent on both ends was a small factor in Blackmon's success.

/r/funny posts poll asking if facebook posts should be banned...*twice*, but the mods disregard the results both times. Why does everyone seem so fine with this? by sje46in TheoryOfReddit

[–]relic2279 2 points3 points ago

I sorta 'happened' into the position. I was made a mod of TIL right around when it was first created. Somehow, the subscribers just kept increasing year after year until we eventually hit default status. I'm not sure if that milestone was a blessing or a curse. :P Probably a bit of both. It's definitely not lacking in challenges though.
