Yeah, teachers grew up one way, but the students are completely different. Some days we use this: http://www.prometheanworld.com/en-us/education/products/interactive-displays/ But it's pretty horrible.

Google "karel the robot java." It's a great little tool that my APCS class used last year to teach beginning Java. I'm sure there are tons of videos, books, examples, etc.

It worked for me.
