TROPHY CASE

TIL Steve Jobs shut down all philanthropic efforts at Apple when he returned to the company in 1997. by 996hurtin todayilearned

[–]rawbeef64 1 point2 points ago

He finally became convinced in January 2009, just after he claimed his “hormonal imbalance” could be treated easily. But there was a problem. He was put on the wait list for a liver transplant in California, but it be- came clear he would never get one there in time. The number of available donors with his blood type was small. Also, the metrics used by the United Network for Organ Shar- ing, which establishes policies in the United States, favored those suffering from cirrhosis and hepatitis over cancer patients.

There is no legal way for a patient, even one as wealthy as Jobs, to jump the queue, and he didn’t. Recipients are chosen based on their MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease), which uses lab tests of hor- mone levels to determine how urgently a transplant is needed, and on the length of time they have been waiting. Every donation is closely audited, data are available on public websites (optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/), and you can monitor your status on the wait list at any time.

This fragment from his biography will probably clarify things a bit.

He was on two transplant lists, one for every of the two states I mentioned, since he had an airplane so he could afford to get to any of that two hospitals in time. The lists were public, AFAIK (I'm not from US, so I have no idea how this stuff works there), but if you can prove that you can reach in time in two states, you can join two lists. You'll need a personal airplane for this, so a lot of money.

Up until his death Jobs was an unrepentant douchebag.

Guess what? Jobs didn't care.

That ship is awful.

Launched in a more optimistic time, a hybrid of different technologies, and sporting an experimental engine that was as spectacular as it was dangerous, the ship was heralded as the dawning of a new age, and its launching was considered a chance to rescue its program from the public relations nightmare that had plagued it after cost-overruns, work stoppages and failures integrating components had turned the public against its grand new program.

This sounds good, but I was thinking more at USS Excelsior, not at a flying medusa contraption.

Can't help but think SpaceX is the opposite of what should have happened. by HollywoodMetalin startrek

[–]rawbeef64 13 points14 points ago

Even if SpaceX is only a space trucking company that only follows profit, I'm still happy for that. It will reduce the cost of rocket launches, it will crate jobs in this field, people will once again want to be rocket scientists. On the long run, I'm happy with that. More companies will figure: "hey, space could really be a profitable sector" and more money will flow towards space. The process already started with Planetary Resources and with billionaires pouring money into that venture. Trucking at first, NASA contracts, but it will get the ball rolling. Companies will begin to innovate and they will reach higher and higher grounds, with more ambitious mission. Today: a capsule like the ones form the 60s orbiting the Earth, tomorrow mining platinum from 241 Germania. Even Elon Musk said a few times about Mars and his plans towards it, since Dragon capsule has an ablative shield that could withstand re-enty from above LEO.

Our history doesn't have to be exactly like Star Trek. Space commercialization could be the kick we, as a whole, need to start once again be enthusiastic about space. Rockets are launched, we dream at various vehicles with astronauts in them. Even my wife, who is not really into space that much, watched the replays of today's launch with me and she like it. She liked the young team of SpaceX engineers cheering for excitement of having a toy up there, orbiting the Earth, after years of work.

I love space exploration and if someone is putting their millions for buildings rockets, I'm excited. That's why I think Elon Musk and the whole SpaceX ideea is awesome. Because they launch rockets and because they create around them excitement about space. And that's inspiring and awesome.

No they don't, unfortunatelly. There is no strict template you should follow while writting your thesis, just some general guidelines.

Uhm, I'd rather not :) While vim is an excellent tool for managing my servers' configuration files and such, I can't see myself using vim (or, God forbidds, Emacs!) to write LaTeX documents, at least not now in 2012.

Jan Weiss (Czech writer), wrote, in 1929, an excellent novel, called Dům o Tisíci Patrech (House of Thousand Floors). It's surprisingly actual, I had no idea it was written so long ago when I first get my hands on it, it's really one of those eastern european gem worth reading.

Saturday could be a great day in history. If all goes as planned, 4:55 that morning will see the launch of the first private aircraft to dock with the International Space Station. by vajavin space

Ms. Shotwell said in the pre-launch press conference that they have a tight window and only 50% of SpaceX rockets launched on time, on first attempt. Considering the complexity of this mission, I'd say that the launch will be scrubbed and my money is on one of the next occasion, the closest being on 22 of May, if I recall correctly. However, I hope I'm wrong and I hope we'll have a flawless launch in just a couple of hours.
