Interesting uses for iPads at work? by milacekraisein sysadmin

[–]ravnistic 0 points1 point ago

My Favorite use: Print to Kindle. When I'm on my laptop, and there is an article or pdf I need to peruse, I send it to my Kindle with the Send to Kindle program. It sets itself up as a printer, and you can right click on documents to send them to the Kindle app on your ipad.

Contemplating a switch from Dell to Lenovo... by xftwitchin sysadmin

[–]ravnistic 0 points1 point ago

I buy 70 Lenovo machines per year. Laptops, and Desktops. Currently buying the X130e, 91z, and M91p. I regret nothing, service has been great, products perform, and they have excellent longevity. Their stability is directly related to my job satisfaction.

Edit Also T410 for my admins.

10Gb Ethernet Question by ravnisticin sysadmin

[–]ravnistic[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is what I was thinking. I would like to get a third server, but I think I may find 2 (e5-2640, 64Gb Ram [max 256]) to be adequate for our needs. My physical server processors are never taking that big of a hit, so the third may be too redundant.

I think that's the kicker there. Low pay but benefits? Ok, we can talk. Low pay and no benefits? You couldn't even afford the gas to get to work.

It's awful to say the least, but someone will probably take it for the experience.

Any sysadmins for Universities here? or Academic sector? by g-mein sysadmin

[–]ravnistic 0 points1 point ago

Private Ed, Prek-8th. 500 Students, 70ish staff. Left private sector as it sucks hardcore. Education gets hairy at time, but overall my stress level is greatly reduced, I'm better paid, and I've established myself in a niche market.

And yes, politics are weird. I've been here a year and I'm still not sure I even have a boss.

The breadth of learning is certainly impacted, but not the actual depth. Forgive me if I misunderstood your original statement.

I have worked in both affluent schools and schools where lock-downs were a common occurrence. There is only one factor: Stable Parental Involvement. This changes everything in education.

Let's go for irony here, but technology does not make people learn. It's a tool, just like a book, or a slate and chalk, and before that the Socratic conversation. Learning exists independently of the tools we use to achieve it. I say this as the schools IT Director.

My 3rd Graders are programming Lego Robotics. My 4th Graders can use the words "Economic Necessity" in a conversation. My 5th Graders are making a zoo in the shape of South America in Minecraft.

Don't worry, we'll be OK.
