Smooth Move WD40. by Mitchell115in funny

[–]rasteri 50 points51 points ago

It is technically a lubricant for a couple of hours - after that it becomes a horrible sticky paste that just gums everything up.

WD40 is best used to temporarily lubricate mechanical components that have seized, so they can then be removed, cleaned and lubricated properly.

So fast and slick compared to everything else at the time.

You're kidding right? IE4 was absolutely hated when it came out because it was bloated and sluggish. IE5 was a lot better received, but by that time Netscape was dying and you basically had no choice.

Guys, when you first meet a girl, what does the "Girls are dumb, I only hang out with guys" line mean to you coming from that girl. Is this your key to go in, or run away? by CyborgAttackin sex

If a guy came up to me and said the same thing, I'd assume he was an asshole. I don't see how that's any different for girls.

I agree. All my friends think it's the funniest thing ever made, but I just can't stand it. It just feels smug to me - the writers really think they're making something awesome and fresh and new, whereas actually any idiot could write it.

In terms of recent sitcoms, 30 Rock and Community beat the crap out of it.

TBH I'd watch the wedding of satan himself if I got to eat some Union Jack cakes. Imperialism tastes soooo good.

Are cell phone base stations harmful to health? by Alfiegernerin AskReddit

[–]rasteri 1 point2 points ago

This is a fairly good starting point, but if she's worried about unknown and unproven effects then there's nothing I can really do to help, other than to point out the statistics just don't support the presence of such an effect. The few (usually flawed) studies that have shown a cancer correlation also point out that the risk is still one in several tens of millions, and there comes a point at which a potential risk becomes so unlikely that it just isn't a risk anymore. Some studies have even found a negative correlation, i.e. found that people living closer to masts are less likely to get cancer.

You'd be better off spending your time and money worrying about risk factors which can provably affect your baby's health, such as diet and nutrition. A well-fed child with a 3KW cellphone mast in their bedroom will live MUCH longer than a child fed on junkfood hundreds of miles away from any mast.

Are cell phone base stations harmful to health? by Alfiegernerin AskReddit

[–]rasteri 1 point2 points ago

Definitely, absolutely, conclusively not.

You've probably heard cellphone masts cause cancer, likely because they emit radiation, which post-Chernobyl everyone seems to be scared of. However at cellphone frequencies the radiation is non-ionizing, i.e. the quanta do not have enough energy to knock an electron off any atoms in your body, so they cannot mutate any cells and therefore cause cancer.

Some studies have reported a statistical correlation between cellphone mast density and cancer rates, but that's because they tend to be most common in heavily polluted areas, which can definitely cause cancer.

The problem with Michael Moore is that he straight-up lies to get his point across - even people who agree with his viewpoints have documented this. Being a liar is much more detrimental to the causes he promotes than being lazy and unmotivated.

By Carlsberg Original I actually mean the 3.8% swill you get in green taps/cans/bottles apparantly exclusively in the UK. What's called Carlsberg in the rest of the world is called Carlsberg Export in the uk and comes in silver taps/cans/bottles. It's 5% and tastes perfectly reasonable (for a shitty mass market lager).

Indian restaurants often have Cobra on tap. Tiger only ever seems to come in bottles though.

Adobe Releases Last and Final Linux Version Of Flash Player by Smarttyin linux

[–]rasteri 7 points8 points ago

You miss the point slightly. Flash was originally intended as an interactive low-bandwidth vector graphics format - video support wasn't widely used until 2005 or so. Although programs like Adobe Edge look promising, it'll be a while before HTML5 gains the kind of authoring tools that Flash has. In the meantime, game developers and animators will either have to use an older version of Flash or exclude Linux users from their audience.

In Scotland it's more likely to be Tennents, in England often Carling.

Common shitty pub lagers, in order of (my) preference :

  • Grolsch
  • Budvar
  • Kronenbourg 1664
  • Cobra
  • Stella
  • Carlsberg Export
  • Budweiser
  • Tennents
  • Carlsberg Original
  • Fosters
  • Miller (not genuine draft)
  • Carling

In addition to 3 or 4 of the above, most pubs will have a Cider (Strongbow, Blackthorn) a "proper" beer (Best, John Smith's) and a Stout (Guinness, Murphy's)

Man, I been using Altavista since before it had its own domain name. It was sort of the google of its day, before it succumbed to the "every website must also be a portal" disease.

The host that altavista.digital.com resolves to doesn't even ping.
