Marx Brothers-esque.

I found this artifact in a field near my house, what ancient lost civilization is it from? by oakeain shittyAskHistorians

[–]randommusician 1 point2 points ago

That could date as far back as ancient Greece. The Gold "M" could be a reference to King Midas.

Source: Guns Germs and Steel.

A friend of my wife's just got his masters in "Sacred music" from Notre Dame. What is this? by B92JOHNSONin AskReddit

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point ago

As I know people who make ~$100,000 a year being a church choir director, I'm not so sure it's a waste. We're talking BIG churches, the kind with 3 or 4 services a week, plus more than one choir, handbells, etc. But still. Making bank.

What are some historical mysteries in your field of study? by gandenkrisin AskHistorians

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, its more or less accurate, obviously instruments have imporved as technology has, I was more or less just trying to illustrate that with something everyone's heard.

Probably. I meant the exact harmonies and melody more than instrumentation. A parallel example to kind of illustrate what i meant: Knowing that Beethoven's 5th was performed by a full orchestra doesn't really give you a clue what it sounded like.

That's why I said "for years." It was 2009, and I remember how much nerding out I did when I read that.

I'd like to know what Psalms sounded like. Musical notation wasn't around at the time, nor was the technology to record (obviously), so we're left with just lyrics.

Also, if your taste is more recent, for years, no one knew the exact opening chord to A Hard Days Night

Discussion: If the Pacers and 76ers make the Eastern Conference Finals, could that spell the beginning of a new era, where it is seen as more beneficial to build thru drafting and trading, rather than building around 1 or 2 superstars? by randommusicianin nba

[–]randommusician[S] 1 point2 points ago

The Spurs have already done it. OKC would exemplify it because in an age where Boston built a championship team thru free agency, the Lakers got an all star in a lopsided trade, and Miami is trying to win a ring on the backs of 3 guys and next to nothing else. OKC are contending with guys they drafted.

Not knocking the Spurs, you guys just almost count as a different era, because you built your core 10 years ago.

Edit: clarified to seem less like a dick.

I didn't misunderstand you, but Rose and Noah also fit the Robinson/Duncan model: both drafted by that team. I'm mainly thinking of teams like the Lakers (traded for Gasol) Celtics (2 out of the big 3 signed in free agency) and Heat (2 out of the big three signed in free agency). That's what I'm asking about, not building a great team thru the draft. Boston's done that for decades. I'm just tryinig to encourage discussion on if people think things like that will start to go by the wayside.

I probably should have mentioned the Knicks, since Melo and Amare didn't help them make it past the first round, and an undrafted player was the highlight of their season.

How do I find out how much my baseball/basketball/football/etc cards worth? by stevecobbin AskReddit

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point ago

I honestly can't tell, since they give no guidelines on how they come up with their numbers. The best way to find out is to hit flea markets and ebay, and see what your cards are selling for. Not asking price on ebay, but what someone is actually willing to pay for them.. That'll at least give you a ballpark online. Flea markets are useful because if they're asking more than $2, well, its a card you need to hit ebay on...Sports cards aren't a great way to make money, but they're fun. (I'm a little out of the game right now, had too much on my plate, but I hope to hit the flea market and dive back in next month).

Beckett is pretty much the authority on sports card values. Be wary on your "at least 10 cents" estimate though. Yes, they can value them at that, but no one is going to pay 10 cents for your 2010 Brian Scalabrine card unless they're working on a team set or complete set. Value is assessed only if someone is willing to give you money, catalog prices are a starting point. 10 cents is the minimum.

TL;DR A card has to have a price for it to be in a catalog, that doesn't mean there's a buyer for it.

Whats a good way to store whiskey? by DeathByToothPickin AskReddit

Your liver.

In all honesty, keep it away from sunlight, and you should be OK. Whiskey doesn't spoil quickly. (I think)

Rose and Noah were both thru the draft...and I'd hardly call Noah a superstar. On the other hand (playing devil's advocate to win), Bosh going down exposed how weak that Heat team could be, since they'd spent all their money on 3 great players, and have only average players left, as opposed to the Bulls, who have, in my opinion) 1 great player (Rose), 2 very good players (Noah, Deng), and a host of good or average players (sorry Boozer).

The Heat are left with 2 great players, one good player (or I have a soft spot for Mario Chalmers) and a bunch of average or below average players, with some old guys who used to be good.

Is there any website that contains holocaust survivors' testimonies? by lola21in AskHistorians

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point ago

Not fiction, more philosophy, but Man's Search for Meaning is a relatively short (my copy is 165 pages, including a prologue and afterword) and good read. The first half of the book is the author describing his journey to and experience in a concentration camp. The second half outlines the philosophical theory he drew from this, which admittedly can get a bit dry at times.

I was watching 'We Were Soldiers' and one of the characters remarked 'Sir, Custer was a pussy'. Is there any truth in this statement or was it an offhand remark for comedy? by PhoneySopranoin AskHistorians

[–]randommusician 6 points7 points ago

I think Custer isn't so much celebrated, as used as an example in history class as the most major case where the Native Americans mopped the floor with the U.S. military. That's not celebrating, honestly since the only other battles most students learn about are resounding victories for the U.S, he's almost a scapegoat.

Was there a fear/hope, as humans first started traveling into space, that the astronauts would find God or Heaven? by TheSentientUniversein AskHistorians

[–]randommusician 2 points3 points ago

This trilogy (Called the space trilogy) is a phenomenal read. Another side note, since we're off on a tangent here already, Lewis and Tolkien were close friends, and it was actually Tolkien who converted him to Christianity, though he was always disappointed Lewis became Protestant, not a Catholic like himself.
