Vietnamese/Laotian/Cambodian Village, what's the experience like? by salmonwhispererin travel

[–]radiohead87 0 points1 point ago

I just drove my motorbike and when it got late, I looked for the word guest house in Vietnamese. Just stayed in random places along the way. Very inexpensive and makes the experience much more real.

Drive a motorbike to the Mekong Delta. People are super friendly, it's extremely cheap, it's beautiful, it's largely untouched by outside investment, and the majority of towns have very few tourists (the exceptions I'd say are Can Tho, which has the biggest floating market in the mekong, and My Tho, closest mekong city to Saigon). There are guesthouses everywhere (learn the word for guesthouse in Vietnamese and Khmer when riding so you can look out for them along the way). Vietnamese love to share and, especially in the south, are very warm people. It makes it really easy to meet locals.

It's nice to have a iphone or something similar on you so you can have a translator on you. Vietnamese is very difficult to speak, it's much easier to write in order to communicate.

Did you drive the motorbike from Vietnam into Laos? I own a motorbike in Vietnam and I've read online that you can't cross over any borders on your motorbike. Is this true?

Anyone on the Greenway? by JangusKhanin Charlotte

[–]radiohead87 0 points1 point ago

I grew up on the greenway! I miss it so much. It's great for kids. It connects people of different socio-economic backgrounds as well (people from rich and poor neighborhoods all use the greenway). Such a great social program from the city of Charlotte.

Yea that's the crushed ice (the kind they bang out on the side of the street). I never have a problem with it either, but I've heard of people that often do.

I've always been told to just stay away from the crushed ice (the kind they bang out on the side of the street). If it's the ice with the hole through it, it's fine. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

My mother was good friends with Mac Daddy's mother, from Kris Kross. The first time I heard rap was at their concert. I loved their song "Jump" and it's what initially got me into hip-hop.

The traffic is really only bad during certain times of the day. It can be hell when you are driving during rush hour in District 1. However, it's not always that bad- there are basically no rules though. I always liked this video.

I'm a white guy from America as well and I've got food poisoning 2 times in the 7 months I've been here. One of them though was from me eating a carrot decoration that, in retrospect, was obviously very old. The street food can be a bit intimidating at first, but it really isn't that unhygienic. If you feel uncomfortable with it, don't eat it- it's really inexpensive anyway. There are a lot of great restaurants throughout the city.

In terms of travelling, there are a ton of things to do. Monkey Island in Can Gio is about a hour ride from Saigon and is a lot of fun. The Mekong is great and only a short drive as well (I recommend taking a motorbike or bicycle to get around in the mekong). Phu Quoc is a quick flight from Saigon and is very pleasant. Phnom Penh is a 6 hour bus ride from Saigon. You can take the train up the coast of Vietnam and stop off at a variety of places a long the way- check out seat 61. Halong Bay is of course incredible. Vietnam is fantastic, you'll love it

I've never noticed much of a difference in the culture of white suburbanites and black suburbanites. IMO, that group achieved cultural integration a while ago.

You don't know what they spend the money on though. All you can do is assume. They could give a large portion to the IWW or something similar. Just because they make the money, doesn't mean they don't use the money for something beneficial for the movement.

Buying a guitar in Ho Chi Minh. by TheDoctor66in VietNam

[–]radiohead87 1 point2 points ago

There's a guitar street off Nguyen Thi Minh Kai. The road is either Nguyen Thien Thuat or Ly Thai To. Either way, those roads are right next to each other and they aren't far from the backpacker area. It's full of acoustic guitars.
