Computer Experts: What's a computer trick you think everyone should know? by jojojokin AskReddit

I used to hit up aol chatrooms a long time ago and tell everyone if they pressed alt+f4 they would see the secret message from aol or whatever. Could clear almost a whole chatroom.

Dropped my laptop the day before Christmas a few years ago, not an easy time of year to be looking for replacement parts. by biznatch11in techsupportgore

I had one that the metal bracket that attached to the frame of the lid came un-done. If I recall correctly, it was expoxied on to a few small plastic studs. All the tightening in the world couldn't fix it and I eventually had to replace the lid and the hinges.

Ok good, I couldn't believe that someone thought this, but then people get crazy things in their heads sometimes.

I keep two at my home, one on my main desktop with all my storage, and another in the living room on my NAS. Additionally, I back it all up offsite with crashplan.

Hard drive space is much cheaper and more reliable than thumb drive space. Also, if they are irreplaceable, you should at the minimum have two backups.

I really hope you're not actually keeping irreplaceable pictures on a thumb drive.

I'm going to try this out here at home tomorrow. It doesn't sound right but entirely possibly.

I have a newer satellite dish that came with my new house. Can I use it for anything fun? by esper2142in networking

Very cool. HAM has always been a hobby I've wanted to get into but the amount of information out there is pretty overwhelming and the cost to try the hobby out is pretty steep.

I'd be really interested in reading more about this. Does your friend use HAM to decode these satellite images or a satellite dish? *

Here are some handy file-association repairs if you still haven't fixed it. They're for XP but should work for 7.

To continue our conversation... The HFC MAC address is what the modem broadcasts on the coax line to the ISP. The CPE MAC address is what is broadcasted to whatever device plugs into the (typically) ethernet port of the modem. Additionally, the DOCSIS protocol has the modem store the MAC address of whatever device plugs into the modem, but does not broadcast this to ISP. The only MAC address broadcasted to the ISP per DOCSIS is the HFC MAC address. Spoofing the CPE MAC will only change what your device sees. To be assigned a different IP you would need to spoof the HFC MAC which is very difficult nowadays on most ISPs, unfortunately ;)

And then I realized you're not the OP.

I think I'm getting a little confused here. Are you trying to change the IP address that your provider issues you or that you are leased from your router to your machine?

[–]pstu 0 points1 point ago

I'm not familiar with this model of modem, but most need to be hacked to be able to change the MAC. Additionally, at least in DOCSIS systems use the MAC as part of identifying which subscriber you are and authenticating you.

What he said. I've noticed my IP staying the same for a pretty long time on Cox. If you are even able to change the MAC of your modem and clone a MAC of a subscribed modem, you'll most likely get booted from the network.

Thanks for the recommendations. My gf and I were planning on going, and possibly going nude, depending. I'll remember your point-trick if any binoculars come out.
