Developing an in-house client is not inherently any more secure than using Adobe Air. It would have been almost as easy to do the mastery hack by having a script impersonate the client without any need to have the PVP.net client running. Said technique is how sites like lolking.net get their user data, and is documented to a certain extent.

For any other game? Just create a menu in-game scaleform or some other UI solution. See also: HoN, DotA2, WC3, SC2, and every other game forever

For league? Everyone is so used to the convenience of having a lightweight client that can be left running in the background and keep you connected to your network of friends that they'll probably need to strike out and find some new ground.

The mastery hack was decidedly not the fault of the client or Adobe Air in any way. It was entirely on Riot's lack of server-side verification.

It probably doesn't have anything to do with your performance in-game. The client just displays the reconnect button with nothing else.

When I look closely at the slideshow that exists where the featured games appears to be, the left and right edges are jittering back and forth by a single pixel. I have to assume that the sliding background animation is still being performed in the behind the regular slideshow.

The CPU usage here isn't an issue of how much info is there, but the fact that in old Adobe Air apps all the animations are entirely on the CPU. If you sit on the store front page and watch, you'll see a spike in CPU each time the featured banner animates to the next image.
