I remember them being $1.25. And I loved them because I had a janky old equipment deck.

So that means I wasted my time? Sad.

Analyst estimates Amalur IP worth $20 million, 38 Studios employees head to job fair by mehgandavidin Games

[–]preludeoflight 0 points1 point ago

Amalur was developed majorly by BHG. 38 Studios came in over halfway into the production cycle of what was then "Ascendant", and they began melding it into the universe 38 had been creating already. The result of that was Amalur. They wanted the single player RPG to set the tone for the world of the upcoming MMO.

And now, fun with filesizes.

First, I converted the gif into a bmp. 5.00 MB Then, I tried compressing it with various formats:

bz2: 228 KB
7z: 204 KB
zip: 308 KB
rar: 244 KB

Clearly this wasn't working. So, time to try image compression techniques!

8-bit PNG: 522 KB
100 Quality JPG: 5.1 MB
10 Quality JPG: 166 KB (but oh man did it look bad!)

In short: With the magic of modern computing, there's no simple image or compression format that suits well to tile-based images such as this. It really kinda makes me want to create one, for no reason, really.

No Ranked WZ in 1.3? by pahomiin swtor

[–]preludeoflight -1 points0 points ago

I wouldn't be surprised, honestly. They won't make the mistake of saying they're including them only to pull them at the last second again. They very well could at the last second say "also including, ranked warzones!"

I too would love to see the nuts and bolts of the operation.

Would kinda be ironic if the source wasn't available, right? "Here's this great tool for our platform that promotes open source and sharing... no, it's not open source!"

Probably just bad at sarcasm. Funny thing is, I'm also subscribed to /r/rct and on my front page it had a post just above this. I was quite confused!

Im not so sure that it's reflecting constantly at runtime. Objects aren't adding or losing methods, so I imagine they find the methods once when everything starts up.

I'm fairly certain up charges for debit use is against MasterCard and Visa merchant agreements. You can report them for that. Or mention that you might do that, they might stop!

Client performance when in large open-world pvp;

As I ran around Corellia last night, I think I've finally narrowed down where their huge perf issues seem to be coming from: perhaps a bit from effects, but majority from: animations. The engine has no problem rendering tons of triangles. Some of the geometry in Corellia is quite impressive in the number of tris that make it up. But when you're dropped in huttball, a much smaller world with much fewer triangles... the framerate beefs it.

I once experienced a bug where I could still move around after a huttball match finished (I could even pick up the ball and take it places! Couldn't score though.) As people dropped out of the instance, my frame-rate skyrocketed. They weren't even on my screen mostly (so the triangles should have been culled) and yet I still experienced a low framerate. When they started dropping out though, I quickly capped the FPS at v-sync. Running around the arena felt smooth as butter.

I'm not sure what they're doing in their animation system, but there's definitely some issues there (even with seeing some optimization -- look at an enemy animating from 50+ meters away... the animation is 'choppy', yet that doesn't seem to help processing much.)

The reason I'm rambling on all this is: If I'm noticing it, I'm sure they have. And I quite believe at some point there's going to be some optimization in that system that will improve everything across the board. I just hope it's sooner rather than later!

Really now? That's awesome. I mean, not what your brother did, but that they transferred it. Usually they're pretty stingy about transferring licences (steam is even worse!) but I'm glad to hear they could take care of a situation like this -- I imagine it happened quite a few times!

That's how I feel about it. I really would have enjoyed to play the game I think, at least for a bit, but I don't know how much they're gong to notice my non-purchase.

This is also why the option for pressing control alt delete before logging in exists. Since its a particular key chord that only windows can listen to, requiring it to be pressed before logging in helps stop phishing attempts. Malware that attempts to emulate the windows logon will never be able to respond to control alt delete, thus raising a warning to the user attempting to access the machine.

Of course, you've got to train your users why they're pressing control alt delete, or you're not doing any good.

A flawed approach, but a reality.

Which I never truly understood. It doesn't stop the signal after it gets to where it's going. Nor does it stop a well placed camera pointed at the screen.

Turtle Soup Anyone? by Eizionin lotro

[–]preludeoflight 1 point2 points ago

I haven't played LotRO since this guy was one of the two things we wanted so badly to take down. We tried for days and days.

We had a guy in our Kinship, Daff. Daff was a bit of a running joke, that he was indestructible. (He very often would bug out and not get killed in things that are supposed to be auto-wipes, like when the last boss of the rift jumped; somehow he stood under him, once he landed, everyone wiped and the boss reset, but Daff lived.)

One day, my fellows and and some pick-ups took down the turtle, finally, and barely. Only one survived the encounter. It was Daff.

The man is invincible.

I miss this game so much :) </nostalgia>
