Is it common for Americans to not take their shoes off when entering a house? by rowdyonthevexin AskReddit

[–]plokijuhujiko 0 points1 point ago

I can't speak for other countries, but as far as Americans go, there are a lot of families where taking your shoes off in other people's homes is considered to be making yourself a little too comfortable; it feels almost as if you put on a robe or changed into pajamas. It's mildly disrespectful. On the other hand, there are plenty of homes I go into where everyone pads around in socks to keep the carpets looking nice. I generally try to mirror my host in terms of their footwear or lack thereof.

What can I say? My dog is an artist. by widowedsoulin WTF

[–]plokijuhujiko 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of my friend's dog. Her favorite toy is a hedgehog that make a snorting sound when she bits it. She's on her third: with each one she makes a hole in the head and removes the stuffing and sound device while leaving the rest of the 'pelt' intact, so that we find their poor hollowed out skins afterwards. She could be a monster in a one-off episode of the X-Files.

Took about 5 loops from the 0:30 to 1:20 mark. Classier than most times, so thanks. On a side note, those chimney things at 1:22 or so were really pissing me off. WTF, cameraman? You think you're a damned artist?!

Learn an instrument, develop a style, start a band, write some songs, play some gigs, and get a record contract... just to use that as an album cover.

Ladies of reddit, how do you start to get aroused by men: physically and mentally. by SemiSarcasticin AskWomen

I'll admit that this is easier than the method I came up with (forming a mental image of clowns killing penguins with chainsaws), but I'm not sure that it's faster. New experiment while approaching the bus stop where I get off!

Would we be able to think without knowing any languages? by xX5xin AskReddit

[–]plokijuhujiko 2 points3 points ago

The bulk of the development of the human brain occurred without language, and your thought process involves language less than you think; the words you 'hear' in your head are more like the paint on an object than the object itself.

Consider this thought: Yesterday I was cold when I left the house in the morning, but sweating by mid-day. I should wear a jacket over short sleeves instead of just a long sleeved shirt like I did then. I'll be more comfortable if today is like yesterday, because I could just take the jacket off if it gets warm.

Your mind processed a lot of feelings (how it felt bad to be cold, then hot, how you've felt when you're comfortably dressed, how you feel smart when you've adapted well to a situation), images (the various items in your wardrobe, how comfortable other people appeared to be, based on their choice of outfit, and what they were wearing to achieve that level of comfort), and experiences (your observations that one day in a season is often similar to the next, the different properties of the clothes you have access to) way before it ever got around to popping out corresponding words. The words are an afterthought, really.

If your mind really focused on the language, rather than feelings and experiences, then you'd be pretty badly served in some situations. Examples: I'd like to fuck her. I should act cool, or If I miss this shot I'll feel like a tool, or FUCK, IT'S A LION!

15 minutes ago I almost died. I was ratcheting a 3500 lbs boat onto a trailer and the hook point broke. It missed my head by less than an inch. What near death experiences have you had Redditors? by Ecuatorianoin AskReddit

Pretty weak compared to most here, but perhaps the closest in my cushy life:

Came within 6 inches of stepping on a frightened copperhead while wearing flip flops when I was six. I'll save you the trouble of wikipedia: it rates pretty damn low on the list of venomous snakes in terms of danger to humans, but I was like under 50 pounds and a decent distance away from any medical facility.

On the other hand, I found a box turtle that day, which is the six year old kid equivalent of getting a blow job while beating your boss in arm wrestling.

Behaving like a member of a civilized society is going to be rewarded with incredulity and cynicism sometimes, but you should be aware that your actions do have meaning and value. If even one person who witnessed your behavior acts similarly when the same situation presents itself to them because they were impressed by the way you acted, then you've accomplished something noteworthy. That is how the world slowly becomes a better place.
