Definitely work with the ambience of the audio; the voices of the enemies inside were super dry, so that didn't convey distance or space. Put some reverb on them. Also, play around with automation for when the character gets closer and further from things like air conditioning units.

You could. But the average guitarist doesn't like being told his amp tone is shit, so I usually come up with something like "well, if you let me get the direct tone from your guitar along with the amp, I can phase shift it and add some delay and it'll really fatten up your sound." or equivalent bullshit. That keeps the player happy, and I can scrap the original amp tone later.

I've critiqued a few recordings of PODs, mic'd Spiders, and direct-out spiders. The Spider sounds horrible, almost every distorted channel (which I'm guessing you're going to use, given the genres) is way overcompressed, and just sounds nasty. The POD is slightly better, just because it allows for more control over the tone.

Also, it's an unfortunate truth that very few guitarists know jack shit about tone. Whenever I go to record electric guitar, I always try to get a direct-out from the guitar. That way, if the amped tone sucks, I can always go back and re-amp using the direct signal from the guitar.
