Is being a game designer actually fun? Because I know at least in America game design (or at least any job that isn't directly related to the design aspect) is the most soul-sucking experience you'll ever do.

The way I see it is like this: the word "riddle" right now has been distorted in such a way that it's almost a form of bullying. Puzzles (which used to be riddles) have defined statements at the beginning of the puzzle that eliminate all other possibilities except for the one "correct" one. These days, people make up riddles with only one answer but don't limit it to only one answer. These are bad riddles. Teachers love to use these in classes, making up bad riddles like this in order to convey a certain kind of feeling or, "put yourself in the characters' shoes."

But if it does such a thing uniquely and helps makes the students/whoever understand the point better, then it must be a good riddle, right?

Well, that's where your mistaken. It's still a bad riddle, because when isolated on its own from the 'point' you're trying to make, it doesn't hold up.

Good video games hold up on their own. Fighting games hold up not because of story, but because of their mechanics (I hate the word 'gameplay'). Our problem is that we are so desperate for something to legitimize our hobby we miss the forest for the trees (I think I'm using that expression correctly). We're calling "games," (if such a term can be used) like Dear Esther good, not because they're actually good games, but because they have an amateur story that literally could of have been in a book.

On the subject of if it makes games better: We seem to be so desperate for the feeling of a "good story" that we only focus on that. Games with mediocre systems and mechanics or completely non-innovative ones get lauded for doing something that thousands of games already have, because the "story," is "good" (though it very often pales in comparison to even the most summer blockbuster-y action flick, like Captain America). Many seem to say that the story makes the games more important and more memorable. However, they also seem to say that games such as Bioshock wouldn't have been memorable if it weren't for their "story," (which consisted of listening to an audiobook while shooting things in the face and then essentially being chided for playing the game like a normal human being, a failing of post-modernism and one of the reasons I hate it in video games and hate games like No More Heroes). Well, if Bioshock wasn't memorable but for its story, maybe it's time to study that statement.

Even though I'm aware of the sarcasm in your statement I completely agree with you. And if you don't believe that men aren't sexualized already, look at Ezio. Or any of them. The reason they're not showing skin is because women aren't attracted to the physical the same way men are. It wouldn't really benefit as much.

TL;DR you're not going to get a girlfriend because you only play female affirmative games.

At least gamers in the 90's enjoyed games for what they are. Sure, it's when the people brainwashed by their English and Theory of Knowledge teachers came in, but at least they don't matter still.

.... I hope.

This isn't a point this is me wondering why people make such a big God damn deal out of it.

Hollywood does it. They do it DIFFERENTLY. But they still do it. No one's bitching about movies.

Well, the neo-feminists are. But around the time that feminists started bitching that there were no good female role models is also around the time feminism stopped fighting for anything worthwhile (equal wages at work), and resorting to complaining about it instead. Maybe it's just as a society we have a combined ennui and we've decided that nothing is really worth fighting for, just complaining about.

And no, I am not female.

Part of the reason is that whenever characters do change from game to game fans complain. Look at Ema Skye from the Ace Attorney series. Granted, she didn't change as a character very well, but at least it was something.

Fans bitched. Again, her "final form" so to speak wasn't great or fun, but it did seem realistic according to the story.

Also, I think it's worth noting that it shouldn't be bad to be a console owner. Saying that graphics aren't the most important part of a game should be something PC gamers take to heart, too.

Some of the best PC games aren't the most spectacular-looking.

No need to be so hostile. No one has downvoted you, and I noted before that these are opinions respective to the poster.

EDIT: Okay, so people have downvoted you now.

TBH it was probably because you were so hostile.

I agree with you. The ruined art-style of TF2 makes it nearly impossible to play anymore.

At least when hats were first introduced and they were completely random, they stayed within the bounds of TF2.

Also, Demo Knight. FUCK Demo Knight. Took a good class, nerfed him to uselessness and regulated his role to being a huge annoyance and nothing like who he's supposed to be.

Not related either but yeah, Wild Wild West may not have been good in the standard cinema aspects... but come ON! Where else are we getting our post-Civil War steampunk, huh?

Also, what is "The Judge?"

As a counterpoint I would say that a good story is a good story is a good story, no matter how it's presented. It's pretty damn limiting if someone says, "I have an idea for a game, here's my idea for gameplay and here's my idea for the story," and then be told it's only valid if they incorporate both into each other.

I would say that I have heard video game stories that have influenced me even if they're not really a part of the gameplay.

I was making a vague point. The idea is though that if you are pirating the game, you would still BUY it IF you had no other option. It encourages companies to come up with shit like DRM in order to make sure as many people are playing as possible. It's also insulting to developers. "Yeah, we really want to play your game, but because the DRM messes with one of my older games, I'm not going to bother paying for it. Good job, though."

Here's an idea, why don't people try releasing ways to break the DRM while still buying the game? That would be cool if that caught on. I bet that would make a point.

How about Quake Live? I think that was a good idea. Don't change the gameplay to make it so that bad players get rewarded, but introduce them to the mechanics and how the game works and then force them to practice on their own.

I totally agree, but as a message to indie developers:

Saying your game looks "retro" is not an excuse to make a bad looking game. The 8-bit and 16-bit eras of games used the power they had to make as good looking games as possible, so don't make a game look bad and then say it's "retro." It's insulting to old games.

Super Meat Boy did this well by having a unique and engaging art-style.

Yes, but generally a company can at least estimate how many people are pirating. And when they see that people are pirating, that just gives them an excuse to do shit like hurt used games sales.

Tadhg Kelly claims "Games can't tell stories" by BobTheSpyin truegaming

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think video games really have a problem with trying to find a "way" to tell a story, I think that the problem is that we just haven't had good stories told yet. To some extent it means compromising gameplay but to some extent it means compromising a few story elements.

A good story is a good story, no matter how it's told.

I mean, hell, look at Bastion. That game is linear as fuck and it still finds a way to tell it.

No, I hate it, too. But what can you do?

At least back in the 70's Teen Titans comics when she was a sex object, she was based on the 70's ideals of free love and nice things, rather than viewing men as human dildos.

Are you trying to make fun of me? I'm guessing you're not so no offense, but you know, the internet cannot communicate sarcasm etc.

But this just happened recently. Obviously I'm exaggerating, but the whole sentiment just reeks of that kind of faux-maturity that people who aren't really mature show off so that no one thinks badly of them.
