My daughter died at 5:30 this morning. Is six hours long enough to wait to cash in on the karma, or should I wait until tomorrow? by PurpleSfinxin circlejerk

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 38 points39 points ago

Absolutely. Reddit is becoming a fucking obituary and pet cemetery. That's not news, not funny, not interesting. It's just depressing. I feel bad for these people and their situations but I really don't care that much and I wish they would stop hanging up their laundry on our apartment building. I downvote every waah cancer post I see now. It's not that I'm heartless, it's that I just don't care and we have subreddits for coping with this shit.

For the love of God, why did I buy an HP Photo-smart printer? by Darkstar68in hardware

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 0 points1 point ago

Considering that you can get a Brother 435/835 for $100 or less, an Epson Workforce 635 for $65, an HP 6500A for $100, or if you go $50 more, an 8600A... you can have much, much better in the inkjet category and not have a plastic piece of crap that takes a single color cartridge. Fairly certain that Canon's offerings in the same class are better too, even though the ink is a bit more. What you're forgetting when it comes to ink price is ink capacity. Sure it's only $10 for a Kodak black cartridge, but it only has a few hundred pages (at 5% coverage). Lexmark's offering in the same category has 550 pages for $5. The Kodak inkjets are lower quality than basically everything in their class, they don't have separate cartridges for colors, they have low capacity on the ink, and they're flimsy plastic garbage. You're lucky that you haven't had any problems yet - almost every single Kodak we've ever sold came back to us as a damage or return.

If you'd ever seen one of their printers in person you wouldn't be recommending them. They are almost comically terrible. The build quality is worse than Lexmark.

Book recommendations similar to ASOIAF? by cloudiestdragonin asoiaf

At the very least, Dune. The sequels are their own monster but the first is definitely one of the most important works of fantasy/sci-fi ever written and you can see reflections of it in almost anything in those genres written since.

I have it too. Mid size my ass, this thing could eat my other mid size tower! Still, it's glorious and I love it.

I think someone is a little touchy and completely missed the joke.

Not to be mean or anything, but hasn't your friend ever seen a war movie? Never, ever talk about your family, hold up a picture of your family, or send a message home to family while you're on camera, and especially not if you're on your last tour and going home to see them soon.

Scumbag Ridley Scott: releases director's cut of classic movie changing the ending, makes sequel that follows original

That's just silly. I work at a place like Best Buy as a tech, we charge $99 for a setup, but ours is killing the junk, installing all software the customer buys or brings, setting up a printer, making the restore discs, and transferring all their crap from their old computers. I shudder to think how much Best Buy would charge for that.

Stannis is the brother of Robert, related to the Targaryens through their grandmother. He has the third strongest claim behind Aegon and Daenerys.

Confirm, following the Quentyn pattern.

True, but my point is that at the moment, he is not dead. Maybe not dead ever, maybe not dead yet, but right now, he is not dead. He did not die in the chapter, and whenever that happens, GRRM does it for a reason.

The letter from Ramsay, and also the chapter he gave us from TWOW could take place before his defeat.

Just finished Dune... Loved it Thought its ending was fantastic. Is it worth reading past the first book? by unsubscribeFROMin scifi

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 0 points1 point ago

Really, the only general consensus I can find among Dune fans is that the first book is fantastic. 2 & 3 flow naturally from 1, but seem vaguely inferior to me, while 4 is truly completely different from the first three. I personally loved it, but I can see where it would put someone off. No matter what, you have just finished one of the greatest triumphs of the human imagination and it won't retroactively be any worse if you choose to read onward or not (as long as you ignore Brian Herbert's tragedies).

Okay, so what SHOULD Dany have done in A Dance with Dragons? (spoilers, DwD) by Khivain asoiaf

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but at least Xaro had ships. He had a way out and she picked the guy who had control over one group of rebels in a single city.

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 3 points4 points ago

She seemed pretty keen on marrying for power, in which case Xaro was still a better choice than Hizdahr. Really though, I think if she had continued on the warpath instead of parking at Meereen her enemies wouldn't have had so much time to prepare and she could have cleaned out all the slavers. Instead she sat in one place and let her enemies surround her.

Jaime has no loyalty to his children, though, and didn't even like Joffrey. To him they're incidental. And at the end of AFFC, we see him realize the truth about Cersei and change his mind.

[–]pikpikcarrotmon 11 points12 points ago

It's going to be Jaime. She is going to die at the hands of a brother, and with Tyrion a world away, Jaime is the poetic one. He's her twin, her other half, her secret lover. It should be him.
