My slow cooker lasagna. Surprised there isn't one here already. Easy and delicious. by philiphin slowcooking

One reason I like doing it in the slow cooker is I have two small children and it's a lot easier to prep and cook something like this on the counter. Keeping a two year old away from the oven is a nightmare.

Cleanup is not too bad, and yeah this works best with a big oval slow cooker.

Not really. I think it's probably a little cheaper. Personal preference.

Large-scale deployments with Pogo at Yahoo! by philiphin sysadmin

The OSS version will be updated within about a month I'm told. It will not rely on rolesdb, it will be a completely standalone release.

I work closely with the team that owns pogo at yahoo and developers are actively working on this right now.

Why I hate the word Devops by chrisarchitectin sysadmin

Well clearly you've thought this through better than I have.

Also please re-read my article, the drives are automounted so someone can just swap in a different drive every day. 2TB drives cost like $80 so it's pretty simple to have a few in rotation.

Nobody cares about indexing, they just say, "hey I need file X from about so long ago". Then you find the corresponding snapshot directory and there it is.

Also, about your cost estimate: $1250 is for a SCSI drive. Computers don't come with scsi interfaces any more. There don't appear to even be any 800GB SATA LTO drives, the drives are all SAS or SATA. So, you need an adapter card too (naturally this server is a stock PC box).

On the plus side, those 800GB LTO tapes only cost about $20 each so you aren't spending a huge amount on media.

But still, I fail to understand what big win there is with managing a tape drive vs. swapping a few drives around. I understand the points you are making, but they don't matter in this setup. The small business in question understands that the drives are not encrypted and they are ok with that tradeoff.

Also, have you actually used tape drives? They jam, you have to clean them, the tapes wear out, etc. Ugh I still have nightmares.

What's wrong with my parent's basement? It's cozy and I've got an xbox.

I wrote the rsync + usb drive article by the way. It's a rock-solid, inexpensive solution that has served a small business well for 5 years.

I look forward to reading your blog posts about the things that you are working on.
