I made a really simple password generator by pete205in somethingimade

[–]pete205[S] 0 points1 point ago

I thought about this. They're only insecure if the attacker knows they're from a dictionary - and then you could just add a number or special character and that would make it almost impossible to crack. Even so, with the dictionary it uses there's about 20 million combinations (which could be easily cracked depending on the system) but the attacker would have to find my dictionary first. If they used any old English dictionary it would increase the entropy further to probably about 1014 or so possible combinations.

Inspired by the XKCD sketch about password strength and because all the password generator sites I could find needed at least a mouse click to get to the password.

Wikileaks Late Night Cable Dump: Wal-mart has Unions in China, but not in the U.S. by blizzilin worldnews

I didn't know there were laws about how you could set up a union. Anyway, with the internet, you could still make an anonymous group that acts like a union. Whether they are legally a "union" or not, all the members still have the power to call in sick on the same day.

Surely the internet should make it simple to make a Walmart union. All you'd have to do is make a website, collect members anonymously (somehow verify they are legitimate Walmart employees), and then when the group is large enough that Walmart can't ignore them, "switch on" the union.

I'm an ESL teacher too. But in real life rather than over Skype. And in China. I have to agree that it's the kids that make this an awesome fucking job.

South americans can get a bit touchy about "America" referring to the USA as technically they are also "Americans" - hence the existence of the term Estadounidense (USA-ian) as an alternative to Americano.

I teach English in China. I'm lucky enough to have some students who are exceptionally smart and hoping to go to prestigious universities like the students in the video. They are pretty much divided 50/50 between those who are literally unable to criticise their country (it's easy to make parallels with religion here) and the ones who have 'clicked' and although rarely openly criticise the Chinese government, speak with a certain level of scepticism. As previously mentioned here, from the general population the number of Chinese that have this scepticism is far, far fewer.

TIL that in penile-vaginal intercourse with an HIV-infected partner, a woman has an estimated 0.1% chance of being infected, and a man 0.05%. Am I the only one who thought it was higher? by PhnomPencilin todayilearned

Previous trials don't have an impact of the probability of transmission of an individual encounter but they do have an impact on the likelihood of transmission having occurred from any encounter. When I say you have a 10% chance of infection after 105 sexual encounters I mean you have a 10% chance of having contracted HIV during any one of those 105 encounters - not that your next encounter will have a 10% chance of transmission - the transmission rate for individual encounters is fixed at 0.01% (for male-female).

Maths:

Risk of contracting HIV against number of sexual encounters for male-male and male-female intercourse (first plot)

For male-female intercourse you have a 1% chance of infection after 10 encounters, a 10% chance of infection after 105 encounters and a 50% chance of infection after 693 sexual encounters.

You had it easy! When I was a young whippersnapper I had to circumnavigate the globe six times in a leaking empty tuna tin with a soggy tissue for a paddle, before I got out of bed, then make a gravitational slingshot using Jupiter in a rocket powered only by my own inconsolable misery and wretchedness, orbit twice round the solar system and pass through a wormhole into the parallel universe my place of employment was located in. In sandals, with three broken feet, and only a rabid cockatrice for company. Three times a day, thirty two thousand times a fortnight, one billion times an hour. And you try telling that to the kids of today! They'll never believe you.

Why Starbucks names are wrong:
"Tall"

  • This refers to the smallest of the three advertised sizes however 'tall' is usually associated with things being large.

"Grande"

  • It's the 'medium' of the three but grande means large.

"Venti"

  • It means twenty, as in 20oz. however Italians use the metric system, they wouldn't know what the fuck a Venti is.

Not much of a victory - hundreds of passengers will still die, and any useful information the perpetrators may have had would have died along with them.

I understand what you're saying but it should be "Saturday next" rather than "Next Saturday" because "Next Saturday" is too easily confused with the actual next Saturday whereas "Saturday next" is more obviously short for "Saturday, next week".

I hate this convention. Logically, 'Next Saturday' is the next Saturday there is. It's unnecessarily confusing, especially to non-native English speakers. Personally I propose the following standard:

Saturday or This Saturday = this Saturday, the 4th

Saturday after or Saturday after next = the 11th

Numbers are numbers. You can argue whatever you want to explain why they are what they are but that doesn't change it.

Yeah! You can argue anything with facts!
