WWJD: race, sexuality, and hypocrisy. by beachesatnormandyin atheism

[–]persiyan 2 points3 points ago

equal to the struggles of Black Americans or Native Americans... c'mon

I haven't seen anyone who claims them to be equal, as in equal in severity, but they compare them to point out the hypocrisy in people because it's the same damn thing, a civil rights movement.

She said that the color of your skin was not a choice, not that gays don't choose to be gay, in fact this was the point of her argument, that gays choose it, and it's not comparable to slavery because blacks didn't choose it. When she responds and says that it isn't about a conscious choice, it's because she doesn't understand the point of that argument. Why else would she say, "First of all african americans were def born black." as a way to contrast why the LGBT movement isn't the same as the civil rights movement. Her whole argument in the original post was that blacks are definitely born this way so because of that it's not comparable to the LGBT movement.

No, never, it's people's fault you see, the religion itself is all good ... no matter what's written in its book ... by people.

Right, I guess they forgot to edit the Scientology article, because it doesn't really portray them in a good light.

No, I agree, I'm just saying at least it talks about aliens and hydrogen bombs rather than invisible gods and magical powers. Although, it does go on to talk about "thetans" who are like ghosts.

Your second link is from a forum in which one person claims to have personally hated the methods, or one of the methods, while at the same time saying that no one else complained, and not a single mention of teaching Scientology in the class itself.

Another person points out what he learned in a Study Tech course at Delphian School.

The study tech I learned at the Delphian School was, in order of importance: 1. You are responsible for your education. 2. Evaluate what you study. Decide for yourself if it is true. 3. The purpose of study is to be able to understand and use what you have studied. 4. 3 Barriers to study. I thought that was great.

And then contrasts it with Study Tech when he/she joined Scientology.

  1. LRH is source. THE source. That's it. RTC will provide the appropriate version of LRH for you.
  2. Your eternity and the future of every man, woman and child depends on understanding and applying Scientology exactly as LRH intended.
  3. Every misunderstood must be cleared, or else there are penalties.
  4. It's ok to get two crap definitions from a children's dictionary, but if you use a real dictionary and decide to clear just two of the 15 definitions, you are squirreling. This was a big contributing factor to me leaving. I just couldn't follow the rules.

The first link is a more thorough break down of what they teach, but it's about the Study Tech you learn when you join Scientology not what they teach in schools.

This Wiki article about the Applied Scholastics, which is the group distributing the books, has this excerpt:

In 1998, the group submitted five of its books for approval as supplemental classroom texts to the California Department of Education. The review board found no religious content to object to, although they did object to the lack of portrayals of disabled persons and people of color. The Southern California American Civil Liberties Union, however, objected on the basis that the books used many of the terms and concepts that the Church of Scientology uses elsewhere in its Study Tech.

All this really leads me to conclude, still is, that "secular" Study Tech isn't religious in nature, but they try hard to promote it because it teaches the same concepts you learn in Scientology along with similar wording, although it itself doesn't contain any religious subcontext. So later on if you end up studying Scientology you might be more susceptible to accepting it because you already understand part of its teachings. With that said I understand why people would strongly object to it. However, none of this suggest that Will Smith is scientologist because he donated money to a school teaching this program, perhaps he likes the method and believes it works, and as I've come to conclude it's secular in nature.

I think this can be compared to taking the Bible and stripping it from all supernatural and religious claims and leaving in all the philosophies and life guides, ect., and then teaching it to kids. Eventually, if those kids read the original bible they might be more accepting of it given that they might agree with some of its teachings already.

Now I dont know but are there any viable studies done to conclude that kids do in fact end up being more susceptible to accepting the religion if they've been taught some of its teaching already? Plausibly so, perhaps, but I don't know of any such studies.

Isn't it funny. I mean to guy a hot woman is a hot woman, whether she is on TV or walking down the street. To a woman on the other hand the celebrity status of men has so much to do with their appeal, and usually the same looking guy walking down the street would be completely overlooked.

People don't always change that, I know plenty that say "worked" even though they currently work there. Plus I doubt the first thing a person remembers to do after they get fired is to go and change his work status on Facebook.

He has claimed he isn't multiple times. The school he donates to teaches Study Tech, which is a course on teaching kids how to learn effectively, it doesn't necessarily mean they teach you Scientology in it, the school has denied that it teaches the religion. If he is a Scientologist why does he deny it.

Cannes: Scientology Will Have to Deal with 'The Master' - Forbes by nuclearsteamin movies

[–]persiyan -1 points0 points ago

Well, that is part of Scientology itself, but do you have proof that they teach that in Study Tech. The schools claim that it's only a class about teaching how to learn effectively and not a religious class, meaning that they don't teach about Xeno. I'm all for bashing Scientology, but do any of you have any reputable sources that claim that they teach Scientology in Study Tech.

Edit: Oh, and Xeno is an alien, not a god, while a crazy story with unscientific crazy shit, Scientology still has got more basis in reality than Abrahamic religions. For instance we can all agree that alien life is a probable thing, while invisible god creatures... not so much.

Edit: I guess the proof is in the downvotes? Dare I try to bring a discussion to a land of memes, assertions, and one liners.

I've never seen anyone claim Colbert to be an atheist. Just because /r/atheism posts pictures of him with quotes doesn't mean they think he is an atheist. In fact I haven't seen much claims of NdT being an atheist either, I've seen the claim get downvoted plenty of times there. Let's not generalize about other groups generalizing.

They teach Study Technology, which was invented by Hubbard. It challenges three basic "barriers", when learning an object don't just read about it, have the object present to handle. Don't move to the next step when learning something before understanding the previous step. And when learning about something don't dismiss words you don't know the definitions of, learn the definitions. Which is basically a course that teaches you how to learn, and it's all really just basic common sense stuff, but none of it really scares me, I don't think they preach about Scientology in it, although, I haven't looked to much into it, at least they say they don't.

Of course the cynic in us would be skeptical about why they want to promote this basic learning course outside Scientology if they didn't intend to promote their cult in some shape or form into the course.

There isn't anything that she'll learn on a t3i that she can't learn on a 5d. We aren't talking about horsepower that will cause you to smash the camera into walls and swirl it in your hands, your analogy is irrelevant here. If she has the money, why not get a good body rather than spend money on a cheap body and then spend more money on a better body later.

Even if you fix the problem that caused it, it isn't going to get us out of the recession we are already in, is it? Getting out of recession always meant throwing money at it, and it's worked before, of course throwing is implying to aimlessly spend and of course that isn't what we do when we throw money at it.
