You're older?

I don't know as much about the hows and the whys but it's possible there's a different ingredient in Kolsch styles that you just don't agree with. I'd just drink more water before bed or drink a little less Kolsch.

wouldn't that cost a bazillion dollars? I like/love the idea but I don't know that I can replicate it in the US (I want to so bad though)

Take a hot shower, exit shower while room is still humid, shave going against or with the grain as you find comfortable. Modify process as needed to reach desired results.

French Baguette - first attempt! by farmeggsin Baking

[–]paddlin84 0 points1 point ago

You can definitely let it ferment in the fridge. It slows down the rise process and you want to make sure the dough doesn't dry out but it will give you more of a tangy flavor without any additives. If you want to get more into bread baking you should pick up a bread baking book, like the bread baker's apprentice. It explains a lot about the details of bread baking.

I also thought the Belgian Congo Pale Ale was pretty tasty. Quite the sessionable Pale Ale.

You'd probably be better off if you made half of this recipe the day before or several days before and allowed it to ferment in your refrigerator. Then combine with the rest of the recipe when you make it and slow down your rise time from 1 hour to 5-12 hours and after you shape it allow it to sit ("proof") for another hour or two then throw it in the oven and splash some water on the hot floor of the oven to create some steam, this will give you a crisper crust. Lastly you should leave it in the oven a bit longer than you did here, you'll get a more golden crust.

Keep it up!

"Congress now speaks at almost a full grade level lower than it did just seven years ago ..." by clairdin watchingcongress

[–]paddlin84 3 points4 points ago

I'm ok with this being in r/watching congress.

I'm not sure the study is all that valid as AWKWARD_HANDS_GUY points out quite well. Then again when it comes to stats as long as someone sounds like they know what they're talking about good enough for me so he could be full of it too (not saying he is just saying there's a non-insignificant chance he is, this being the internet and all).

The study makes an interesting point and I think it's about congress specifically and quite focused on congress exclusively and not just saying Republicans suck, Democrats suck. Just saying "We ran some numbers, these were the results take them for what it's worth" which is not all that much even if the mathematics were solid. It would be easy to write an article based solely on this saying that congress is getting less intelligent or that they are on balance dumber than previous congresses.

It's interesting that there was a big shift towards more simplistic language in two periods one appears to be just after 9/11 and then rebounded and then you've got another sharp decline in 2005 in the lead up to the wave election that saw Democrats gain control of the House and the Senate in the 2006 elections and now there appears to be an uptick coming into the 2012 elections.

I guess that's a long way of saying, political statements are political. But I thought this was interesting to think about and I would never have seen it on r/politics if it was put over there since I avoid them like the plague.

How about Gio?? by peterszwercin Nationals

[–]paddlin84 0 points1 point ago

Just don't talk about how good things are going or how "we've got this one in the bag" feel free to discuss things that have happened (amazing catch! Grand Slam! etc.) "This game is going great!" seems kind of far to me.

However now that I'm reading your post again it doesn't seem as bad. There was just a couple of incidents where posts like this went up and then we get crushed late in a game. Personally I prefer highly modified statements or just statements of facts during the games.

What has your experience living and working in DC been like? by seaboat90in washingtondc

[–]paddlin84 5 points6 points ago

People go tubing all the time on the Potomac upstream. West VA has some great whitewater - The Cheat river, Gauley River, New River not to mention Pennsylvania. There's class V whitewater within 30 minutes of downtown DC at Great Falls not to mention whitewater right in DC itself with Rock Creek, I wouldn't recommend tubing there.

Yosemite is a poor comparison to Shenandoah (anything that's not Yosemite is going to pale in comparison) but there aren't the crowding issues in Shenandoah and other lesser parks and outdoor areas. I recommend Dolly Sods Wilderness in W.VA awesome hiking area and much less crowded than Shenandoah.

Anyhow, I'm not trying to quibble that you'll find something as grand as Yosemite but there's some good nature near by and you won't likely have to contend with the same crowds in the summer that are found in Yosemite.

Question about the running abilities of a playboat by bdogg54in whitewater

[–]paddlin84 0 points1 point ago

You can playboat on anything. Class II is no problem, just remember it's about how comfortable you are with your boat and your abilities, the more comfortable you are with your particular boat the better off you are. Just remember to have fun!

Watching Congress Status Thread by handsoffmein watchingcongress

[–]paddlin84 2 points3 points ago

I think it's worth pointing out that a LOT of bills get introduced in the first day of each session of congress. Some members (generally from large cities like NYC) will introduce a ton of bills on the first day of a new session of Congress (So January after a congressional election) so they can make a big headline splash in their region's newspaper to distinguish themselves from their peers from the same region.

Also I can't program but does the bot currently take into account that some bills will be merged into other bills as amendments to legislation in committee mark-ups or on the floor of a chamber? Some bills will leave committee as one numbered bill and come to the floor as a different number bill for whatever reason. I know this happens sometimes with big bills and specifically I know it happened in the House of Reps for the Healthcare Bill.

I think the bot should have a name like congressbot, debate-o-bot, billbot, legbot, billybot, just sayin.

I like the subreddit and I think it fills a valuable niche. Thanks for all the effort with the bot and keeping things going!

For the size of the store it's a pretty excellent selection, I think if they wanted to really go crazy they'd have to cut out a bunch of their already limited selection or remove their prepared foods section. However it is the only place I've ever seen a mini-keg of Bell's Hopslam!

Strawberry St. Market has a pretty good selection of Sodas. It's not quite on par with this selection but it's as good of a selection as anything I've ever seen. I bet if you went in and started requesting different sodas or asking about it they'd try to find some. For a convenience store they have an excellent selection of odd ball products be it chocolates, beer or wine.

S.743: Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act of 2011 by xNaVxin watchingcongress

[–]paddlin84 0 points1 point ago

It's not about whether a whistleblower can go to the media, it's about whether a perceived impropriety can be reported beyond immediate supervision. It's an acknowledgement that improprieties of a classified nature can and will occur and how should the delicate nature of those improprieties be taken into account for whistle blowers. Not all instances that would fall under the whistle blower category need to go to the media or be aired in front of the general public and this is recognizing that fact.

Some protections for whistle blowers in classified environments are better than no protections.
