TROPHY CASE

For Congregations Gathering in City Schools, Time to Move by vvmatsyukin Christianity

Lamb’s Chapel v. Center Moriches Union Free School District and Good News Club v. Milford come to mind.

baptist1611 and I got into a little debate. Some others started chiming in. I'd like to hear the community's input on the legitimacy of the KJV bible by partofaplan2in Christianity

[–]outsider 1 point2 points ago

But for you, you're assuming that God's guiding hand ended with the 1611 translators, which just seems unfounded to me.

It also seems silly when one considers the LXX was part of the 1611 KJV but is absent from modern printings of the KJV.

Good Guy Atheist by toastthemostin Christianity

[–]outsider -1 points0 points ago

We have what seems to be fewer, proportionally, atheists today than we did 2 years ago. We didn't improve in quality with an influx of atheists nor did it happen after r/atheism was made a default subreddit again.

But your argument would also imply that proportions wouldn't just stay the same.

Christians, how do you explain this? by ghostyhousein Christianity

[–]outsider 29 points30 points ago

How do we explain the earth being scientifically proven to be older than what the bible says?

You read the Bible without respect for history or tradition. A 6000yo Earth is largely due to Bishop Ussher in the 17th century. Prior to that plenty of prominent Christians ridiculed the notion.

I wasn't talking about CO2, I was talking about methane which develops in the anaerobic environment which dams create. Methane btw is a worse greenhouse gas than CO2. The only way to stop that with a dam is to get rid of the dam.

Moreso if they never hear about it. If I'm the only person they hear about that sort of thing from, regarding this subreddit, it becomes white noise.

It's because females are the more typical transmission vector. It's akin to covering one's own mouth while coughing or sneezing.

You could make widespread use of DDT still so long as you used some stringent regulations about frequency of use. The problem was biomagnification which can be mitigated.

Hydroelectric also produces greenhouse gasses. Well when used with a damn anyways. That is without counting the CO2 associated with the concrete.

John Piper wants a "masculine Christianity." What do you think? by rainer511in Christianity

[–]outsider 0 points1 point ago

Sounds more like someone is arguing that Christianity should change for them rather than they change for Christianity. Christ didn't exactly go around saying "Do this, unless it hurts your feelings in which case you should so the opposite so that you feel better about yourself."

Rubbing alcohol on a wound stings, an alcoholic breaking free from long-cycles of abuse does not have a pleasant time, people removing themselves from a destructive relationship are often hesitant to actually remove themselves from it. We are more prone to continue harming ourselves and justifying it whether it is to let a wound get infected because the treatment hurts too much, or convincing one's self that they aren't an alcoholic, they just like drinking 2 cases of beer a day, or "oh but s/he really loves me, I'm going to go pay his/her rent and ignore all the insults and abuse."

Take more time to upvote good things. If there is a fairly consistent effort to suppress things there needs to be a consistent effort to promote things.

That is very much like asking 3 wolves and a sheep to vote on what they will have for dinner.

Here are some ideas:

  1. If it's a meme image, you can post it but do so in self-text. If this is too much let's just not have them.

  2. If it is an image if a famous or even semi-famous person with a quote of his or hers overlaid, do so in self-text. If that is too much then I would suggest here as well that they just aren't used. The better alternative is to simply use the quote and no image.

  3. Rage comics, just type out what you want to say.

  4. Pictures you took yourself, feel free to post them as a link. Apply this to things like the pie-charts which are or were recently on the front page here.

  5. If it is just a text block made into an image, don't do that.

French court rules that it's illegally anticompetitive for Google to provide free maps by DrJulianBashirin technology

[–]outsider 0 points1 point ago

They aren't giving it away for free, it's just that the cost in negligible to many/most people. You payment is essentially Google knowing more about you so that advertisers can show you better ads.

The store analogy would work if advertisers were sponsoring a Safeway or something to give away free food in exchange for the information found on your receipt and maybe what you looked at in the store.

Why do schools keep allowing this type of scam to continue? by coffeetablesexin WTF

[–]outsider 0 points1 point ago

It depends on the purchasing agreement really. Honestly there are good modern textbooks that probably are worth their cost if you keep them and there are also very good free ones out there that teachers don't always know about.

And highly standardized departments like math departments are really horrible when hey assign a new edition.

r/atheism's (admittedly limited) beliefs on the 'historical Jesus' by honestchristianin Christianity

[–]outsider 0 points1 point ago

It's because they are nonsense. Which is what I was alluding to. Gerald Massey was the typical source of it and his crackpottery made it up to the present day through the history equivalent of truthers, birthers, or people who go on about chem trails.

I've priced books at a college bookstore and dealt with the invoices. Charging $140 for a book which cost $45 was not uncommon even if the $140 was the price the publisher set.

Pay with a credit card, then when they refuse a refund do a chargeback.
