First Skydive without parachute successful! by notcricketin worldnews

A German politician named Möllemann once might have committed suicide this way... he jumped, and cut off his main chute and didn't open his secondary security one (and turned off the security measure that would automatically open it). He hit a field at the ground with approximately 200+ kmh and open arms... not the embryotic safety position. The investigation never came to a final verdict whether or not it was suicide, but the jump was just shortly after the his parliamentary immunity was lifted to investigate how he got large amounts of money used for a propaganda leaflet, and after his political career seemed to have been over.

they don't know shit about rhetorics

Great. Real people as politicians, finally. And rest assured, they do know their shit when it comes to issues they focus on -- like copyright, the internet, technology -- things that most other politicians never bothered to learn. And they have democratic voting tools to speed up other processes, and they will continue learning. Let's just hope they never learn enough about rhetorics to sound like all the rest of the politicians.

Thing is, these commercials always go for the "average joe" guy in order to get the largest number of people to identify with them (in order to sell the largest amount of stuff). That's why there's an incredible amount of stupid man stereotypes like this one. Like the guy group where everyone likes sports and bbq and beer. Could you even imagine a car commercial with a guy group where everyone is into, say, comic books, or programming? Usually that would only be possible if there's obvious ridicule or sarcasm involved. (I'm sure you'll find a couple of commercials that do indeed have more interesting characters, but not on average.)

Personally, I hate this commercial just as much as I hate fake boobs. Then again, I hate most commercials.

Her screaming in court reminds me of infamous Nazi judge Roland Freisler (see video). As a foreigner I'm baffled this is an accepted show on US TV, and apparently even here on Reddit. Not because whatever point she may have on the case, but in how her emotional and belittling behavior is apparently considered acceptable for a judge (if only within the realms of fake-reality TV).

I'm not German

... in an explanation about how he doesn't follow rules 100%. Sorry, but that's not "objective, non-sugar coated" language, it's aggressive trolling using stereotypes.

But I think it's great the world has the likes of him. We should have different styles, and overall that will lead to diverse projects. The aggressive Linus' style is good for getting certain things done very well, and he probably rightfully sees his project to be as much about defending the castle walls, than about building a nice new castle tower.

Who are the beeps supposed to protect anyway? I suppose there's this hypothetical kid without any parental supervision, watching TV for 24 hours a day -- including stuff like this that's totally over his head -- who might be ruined if he picks up swearwords?

I moved into a new house and have just realised that the ventilation system allows everyone to hear what goes on in my room. Which has, up to now, mainly been lots of masturbation. How do I laugh this one off? by Tutsmahbarrehin AskReddit

[–]other_one 6 points7 points ago

Slowly introduce a "camouflage" sound that is similar to your previous masturbation sounds. For instance, maybe a little wash basin you use to clean your room. Also, take on a nervous tic which precedes your sneezing, like "ah ah ah ah ahchoo!" Then make sure you publicly perform your wash basin cleaning in the kitchen, accompanied by some more "sneezing sounds" at the dinner table. Guess what? It will be your friends blushing now as they realize your sounds were perfectly non-sexy all the time, moreso considering half of them were probably masturbating to those sounds to begin with!

No, the whole organization responsible for this needs to go (and the politicians enabling them; and while we're at it, get rid of the German GEMA too, as it blocks a huge amount of YouTube videos). Who cares if something is art? Since when is free speech restricted to artists?

Other countries may not even have proper Fair Use laws to begin with -- and that's exactly what's wrong with laws around the world. Even Fair Use as interpreted is way too weak to protect non-commercial sharing like the OP did.

Do people actually believe that artist shouldn't get paid for their work?

So Gary Larson wasn't get paid for his work? Because people spread his comics on boards and internets?

I think artists should have a revenue, and I think copyright laws need a huge reform around the planet, and yet I think the two are not mutually exclusive.

C'mon, we all have some character flaws to deal with. Some of us get drunk on weekends. Others eat candy when they're sad. The little white lies when she asks you if that makes her look fat. Bit of drone murdering out of war zones without legal process. Just makes him more human!

AnnaLynn McCord posted this on Twitter, saying "I woke up this morning and decided I'm over Hollywood's perfection requirement. To all of the "she looks better in the picture on the right" white knights... no she doesn't.

That's actually subjective. I find the left-hand picture perfectly uninteresting and bland. I find the right-hand picture human, which I think is an infinite times more interesting. If she'd be my type -- she's not in either picture! -- I'd find the right-hand one cute in a non-perfect way, and would dismiss the left-hand one as some generic clip-art-fake-model-kind of thing, which I immediately hate.

Gary created the art, it sprung from his mind and his hand

Actually, no: it sprung from society plus Gary. We're in a long tradition of artists, dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, living input-output machines taking our inspiration from anywhere. But that's beside the point -- the point is that not Gary, but law defines who can and can't use it... and the OP link might well have been fair use under US copyright laws.

My favorite "Far Side" of all time. What's yours? by Jean-Luke-Picardin funny

[–]other_one 12 points13 points ago

It might be fair use to post a link to it; http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html . You as a creator are not above laws, and you don't determine what society works like. But let's see:

  1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes

Not for commercial use. The OP is just pointing to it, to show it a group of other people.

  1. The nature of the copyrighted work

Don't know about the nature of this. For the sake of argument let's say Gary gets this one.

  1. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole

Very, very, very little. It's more of a quote from Gary's work than anything else.

  1. The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work

Posting this here might actually increase the chance I'll go out to look for a book by Larson.

3 out of 4? Doesn't seem too far off to call it a perfectly legal fair use case.

Alternate Posters: Disney Renaissance Era by echo_diein movies

The Mulan one is all concept, no execution... an ugly result with a not-so-subtle visual pun that tries to scream "CLEVER AND ARTSY DO YOU GET IT??!!!" at you. Guess I just prefer stuff with an elegance that grows on you, without being in-your-face highbrow. Quite a few of these visual pun movie posters are more about smartness than soul... a fit for gimmicky riddle & illusion books perhaps (and I love those, but let's not mistake that for truly classic minimalist movie posters).

This teaser looks like a big budget Hollywood movie, but it's actually an independent short film shot guerrilla-style in Japan. by pixelprefectin videos

[–]other_one 1 point2 points ago

I thought the same. Basically, this would be the start of the trailer of almost any suspense movie (stopping before there's some action, but we understand that's due to budget). I found the most interesting bit to be in the Vimeo description: "Dust takes place in a world of rapid evolution. Each year new species and adaptations disrupt the balance of their ecosystems"... but with this teaser I'm not convinced the movie would be playing on this fascinating angle the way I'd imagine it to be interesting.
