I've had a bad day. You should win it and pick an easy week.

I want to stress that I stepped into view and was immediately paralyzed, too. This wasn't something I could have done something about. Turn 1, no trap or monster in view. Turn 2, paralyzed.
[DCSS] Minotaur Beserkers - Shield or two handed Axes by eaNHLin roguelikes
[–]ophanim 2 points3 points4 points 3 days ago
Not really. I'm not sure how the formula works exactly but in my experience heavy armour users see EV from just increasing strength and further mitigating the -EV inflicted by the armour.
[–]ophanim 5 points6 points7 points 3 days ago
Two Handed Axe. Shields trail armor and evasion in terms of damage mitigation and minotaur apts are such that they can easily max fighting, a weapon skill, armour, and dodge.
Plus it's almost always better to just kill something as quickly as possible vs. taking longer but getting to avoid a few extra attacks.
(DCSS) What am I not seeing about the monk background? Why would you ever pick it? by rawrgylein roguelikes
[–]ophanim 0 points1 point2 points 3 days ago
It might come back, but there's also been talk of making changes to staff weapons. I'm not really up to date about it.
[–]ophanim 6 points7 points8 points 3 days ago
608,258. As pivotallever pointed out I was ascending with the orb and I came around a corner to watch a monster step on a Zot trap. Since it was an intelligent monster it evoked Zot against me and I got the paralysis affect. Then a panlord showed up and summoned a shadow fiend, the two of which then tormented me until I was down to 3 hp. With some extremely careful play I managed to survive a few rounds but ultimately died to a Stone Giant left over from the Giant Zot vault.. a blow that was a 1 in 90 of actually doing enough damage to kill me and maybe a 1 in 3 of hitting me.
So, I was a little upset. It would have set OgAr high score too. :|
[DCSS] Naga Transmuter of Chei, need some advice by dezas35in roguelikes
[–]ophanim 0 points1 point2 points 6 days ago
Wow, so much bad advice.
NaTm of Chei is awful. I want to find the one guy who keeps telling all of you to play it and then smack him around. I don't know what I have to do to convince everyone to stop playing it but I'm going to just get elliptic or mikee on here some day and we'll write a 10,000 word essay on why it's bad.
Moving on --
Unless you're doing Extended, necromutation isn't necessary. Nice but unnecessary. You can go the Haunt + Necromutation route if you want but it's going to require a lot of skills (something like 15 in summoning, necromancy, and transmutation). As you've already done some investment in that I would probably finish it and then look for a way to channel mp (staff of channeling, cboe) and just Haunt the rest of the dungeon.
As for branch order, I almost always do Vaults 1-7, Snake 1-4, D 27, Crypt 5, and then Snake 5, Vaults 8, and finally I'd consider Elf 5 if I needed loot. Skip Elf 1-4 and just "dive" down as the xp on those floors are awful. Because you're a Chei Naga and thus extremely slow moving I would consider skipping Blade.
And yes, the rC++ Dam+3 ring is probably better than your +5 Evasion.

473,277, so about 20,000 less than danharaj. I should have skipped the holy floor that destroyed my potions/scrolls but I thought there was a pan rune on it (there wasn't).
[DCSS] Noob here. I'm guessing I'm just dead in this situation? by naevorcin roguelikes
[–]ophanim 2 points3 points4 points 13 days ago
Actually, pretty much no great player suggests quaff id'ing potions. I'll only do it if it's rather obvious what it is (read -- the stack is 5+) and/or I'll die anyway. It's not just about avoiding degeneration/mutation, it's also about preserving rare potions that can win you the game (speed, might, resistance, levitate, berserk).
If it means you have 10 unidentified potion types for a quarter of the game, so be it. Quaffing them to id them is at least as bad as having them and not using them.

12 seems early to be in Snake. Can you give us a dump? (Hit #, save, then look in the /morgue folder.)
To answer your question -- yes, you should be using a great sword of speed. Absolutely. It's the second highest damaging sword you can find AND it's speed. There is zero question about this choice. (You can always hit i for inventory then the letter of each sword and look at the base damage; notice how much higher the greatsword is?) As a Minotaur you can easily train up your armour and not need a shield.

[–]ophanim 0 points1 point2 points 16 days ago
You know what? If you don't want to believe me or any of the other top players who dislike Naga of Chei, then don't. I'm done debating the point with you. I'm on the verge of being a jerk to you.
Blade Hands provides a bonus to damage that includes strength/3 and dex/3, so for all the speed you give up you''re only doing an extra potential 10 damage (5.5 average) per swing. However, as haste practically offers 2/3x to 2x more attacks over a period of turns, a non-Chei hasted TM will still out damage you.

It's a sharp movie. It builds on extreme fear and paranoia quite well.

[–]ophanim 2 points3 points4 points 17 days ago
Items used to be calculated into the score but they were worth so little that there was almost no point. Just going to your "stash" to pick up items usually cost you more in points due to the turns then the items were worth. Thus, the devs decided to remove items from point calculation.
[–]ophanim 1 point2 points3 points 18 days ago
Slimify turns any nonliving creature into a neutral slime if you hit it in the few turns it's active. This is essentially a one hit kill on 80% of the game.
Ignore the antiskill comment. Sorry, I got this reply mixed up with the Weekly Challenge. That's entirely my fault.
But Naga of Chei is still pretty bad. The core reason is due to movement speed being extremely important to Crawl. Naga of Chei are incredibly slow. Chei Naga move at 2.8 turns, I believe, per square, while most everything else moves at 1 turn per square. That means that you take almost 3 times as long to move one square as a normal character, which results in being attacked more while moving and not being able to out run anything. Even non-Naga of Chei only move at 2.0 vs. 2.8.
Compound with this the inability to use speed weapons OR haste OR swiftness and you're talking about serious damage output issues. Haste is incredible and you cannot use it. I would rather have haste alone than the slight (and I do mean slight) increase in damage from the improved stats. So while you're right in that Chei doesn't slow attack speed per se, he does restrict your ability to increase it.
Also, Chei abilities just aren't fantastic. They may be cool/neat, but if I'm picking a weird deity I'd rather have Slimify.
[–]ophanim 0 points1 point2 points 18 days ago
I consider if awful that you didn't do antiskill. :P I also consider if awful that you did a Naga of Chei because it's a terrible combo.
[–]ophanim[S] 5 points6 points7 points 18 days ago
I'm actually running a TrMo of Jiyva right now. It's not antiskill, obviously.
The best advice I can give for trolls is to use shields. Trolls are literally the only race I really like shields on. They wont dodge well and it will take a good while, usually, before you can find armour they can wear, but you will often find a shield by Lair or Orcish Mines. They need only 15 skill to use a large shield. It's not as good as AC or EV because shields have less chance of negating damage for every concurrent attack between your actions BUT it will help slightly against hydra and ranged attacks.
Otherwise you were probably doing just fine. I actually think trolls are a poorish race for antiskill because of their terrible aptitudes. You obviously should have skipped Druid Forest.
