"Hey, look over there..!" by red1392in MMA

I think he was saying he would go to the ground with Roy if Roy wanted. Every time Roy "declined", Werdum would strike him. It was a mental game.

I'm not sure if that's Fin Fang Foom or something out of Hellboy. I suspect it's Fing Fang Foom but with a decidedly Mike Mignola style of drawing.

Chris G's play in this GF makes Dieminion look like a rushdown player. Chris G v. Marlinpie by p0wderedtoastmanin MvC3

I can't believe people would go through the effort of hosting a tournament and commentating just to ask why people on the other side of the country wont fly out to play with them or to slam a player because they don't like how he wins.

[DCSS] Troll Berserker questions. by Vilis16in roguelikes

[–]ophanim 3 points4 points ago

Unnecessary. Trolls can use Brothers in Arms to take out Hydra.

I would not use any weapons as a TrBe. I would simply get unarmed to 15 as quickly as possible and then train Traps to 8. I'd probably wear a shield once I found one and trained Shields up to 9 (or whatever it is a Troll needs to reach to offset penalty) and wear Dragon Armour once it became available. After you hit 15 unarmed and Traps 8 and you're not training armour/shields, you can train more unarmed and fighting.

As I understand it he mixed whiskey and water. I would suppose that the whiskey made the water uninhabitable for the microbes that cause dysentery but I'm not sure.

Edit: Thanks Sushisource.

Saw this during the Primetime 2 show. Probably not the smartest thing to do or publicize. by [deleted]in MMA

[–]ophanim 5 points6 points ago

That looks like juice. The top looks like a twist cap and the bottle shape doesn't look like any beer I know (not that I drink a ton of light beer). Beer also tends to come on darker or thicker glass or uses big labels to stop light from causing the beer to skunk.

Plus, Diaz strikes me as a guy who doesn't actually drink much and certainly not while he's training. Just my two cents, though.

Is anyone considering seeing UFC 143 in 3D on the big screen? by [deleted]in MMA

$25 per person isn't necessarily cheaper than $60. You also only get one fight, not the whole prime time card.

I doubt you MMA guys will want this here. But here is my promotion to a blue belt. Watch the end of it to see the traditional whipping. by thetankyin MMA

[–]ophanim 6 points7 points ago

BJJ =/= Karate. Also, despite how stupid that looked these guys would kick the crap out of just about anyone who hasn't had at least the same level of training in ground fighting.

If you have trouble with that notion then remember how a famous musician or actor can be fantastic at what they do and still be a total douche. Same thing, sort of.

If you play online, other players can spectate your game and comment on it. There is no "true" multiplayer function, though.

DAE completely avoid using magic? by Vigoda_Xin skyrim

[–]ophanim 21 points22 points ago

No. You are the only person, out of everyone who plays this game, who avoids magic. Not one in the millions of people who play this has avoided magic. No future player will avoid magic.

It is just you.

in denial by montypythonssheepin Sherlock

[–]ophanim 2 points3 points ago

As I understand it, a popular way to discern the two is use the cause of the mental abnormality. If it's neurological in origin, such as odd brain wiring, than you would call it psychopathy. If it's psychological in origin, such as the reaction to a severe childhood trauma, it's sociopathy. Which is to say that psychopaths are born that way and sociopaths become that way. I am not an expert so take it with a grain of salt, I only know this because I've looked it up a lot. There are also some related differences that seemed to be commonly agreed upon, like sociopaths being more inclined to actually caring about very close friends where as psychopaths tend to be completely incapable of it.

Given that definition, it's pretty interesting that Sherlock says he's not a psychopath. If he's a sociopath and the writers/producers are using the above description of the disorders than it suggests that something happened to him that caused him to shut off or mostly ignore the parts of himself that feel and empathize with others. It would be interesting if this is true and could give us material to explore in future seasons of the show.

I know that a common theory among Sherlock scholars (original books, not new series) that support the idea that Holmes is at least a bit of a sociopath is that something happened to his family, likely his mother, that caused him to become obsessed with solving crimes and problems as a way to deal with it. This is further evidenced by Mycroft's similar need to keep things running smoothly and safely. You take two men of unprecedented genius and cause them severe trauma at a young age, perhaps involving an unsolved case, and it's easy to imagine that they both grow up so that their coping mechanisms directly impact what they do with their lives.

This is all hearsay, of course. They could just be using a different definition or it could have been a throw away line/joke.

AKA Reality Show - Shows how AKA runs along with CAIN and other AKA fighters. by vxicexvin MMA

[–]ophanim 4 points5 points ago

Bit awkward. I made it to the segment about the live-in-fighter.

The opening with Cain was rough. I haven't seen many interviews with him but he strikes me as being eloquent and intelligent, which is not what I expect out of a guy with "Brown Pride" on his chest. It makes me feel bad that he lost. It also demonstrates a certain amount of hyperbole as Cain not only lost but was completely out struck, where as striking is what is featured over a narration of how invincible he is.

Live-in-fighter dude just looked plain uncomfortable on camera. I'm sure he's kind of put off by having to live with his coach/trainer like that, even if it seems really common in the industry.

All said, I'm not sure I want to watch a reality show about a specific gym. I'd rather follow a specific fighter. BJ and Reem have really good shows.

An honest question: How can Dana White get away with being so unprofessional? by Saltydawggin MMA

[–]ophanim 20 points21 points ago

Frankly, they probably assume it attracts customers. It's a brand image. This sport is a no non-sense, working man, blue collar deal. The fighters work hard and come from common backgrounds. They key demographic is the beer drinking American male who acts the same way Dana does.

Plus, look around here -- we're probably in the top 10% of MMA fans in knowledge and intelligence, but the majority will still defend his actions and attitude. Clearly it's not as big an issue at the moment as some of us think it is. Other sports have similar figures, either presently or in the past. Apparently it's just not a big deal.
