As for the baby food, you actually don't even have to do "baby food." Look into something called Baby-led Weaning. Our kid will not be getting purees. She'll be starting at 6 months with finger foods and will basically just be eating parts of what we eat. This is also what the La Leche League endorses, and it's in their Womanly Art of Breastfeeding book.

Came here to endorse cloth diapers as well! We do prefolds and covers and can diaper our baby for $150 birth to potty-trained. Check out r/clothdiaps for tips!

Edit: to the OP, also check out r/babybumps and r/breastfeeding. Reddit has been a HUGE help for me as a new mom!

Anyone forget or miss being pregnant? by wing-tipin beyondthebump

[–]one_hot_llama 2 points3 points ago

Yes. I almost feel like it never happened. The other day I went back and read some blog posts I wrote during pregnancy, just so I could jog my memory. I had a relatively easy pregnancy, and we do plan on having more than one kid, so I guess it's good that I could forget so easily?

Okay, that's what I thought. My sister didn't get any nutritional advice about it and switched her to soy formula almost immediately after they took the baby to the ER. Luckily, Babies R Us makes a soy formula that worked. (The doctor first recommended the super-expensive formula, but they decided to try BRU brand first, thank God.) They only breastfed for 17 days. I was pretty sure my sister could have altered her diet if she really wanted to keep at it, but she had formula-fed her older kid, so I think a lot of times that makes it easier to switch. Also, since I hadn't had a kid yet, and was just getting info from a friend of mine, they didn't want to listen to me. Be proud that you made it 5 months!! Oh, by the way, my sister's kid is now 18 months old and drinks cow's milk just fine. Apparently, when this happens, it often goes away.

I would be PISSED if I had those toxic people near me at such a vulnerable time. Have you looked into La Leche League in your area? There are women out there who would be happy to support you and lend an ear if you need one also. But congrats on trusting your instincts and sticking with it!

I wish someone had told me that newborns in the first month or so are BORING. Seriously, they don't do anything other than eat, pee, and poop. And sleep, sometimes. They're basically just blobs.

This happened to my sister, and she switched to formula right away. Are you saying that you cut out dairy for yourself and that you're still breastfeeding? (I've been trying to learn more about this.)

I experienced this as well. I didn't really fall in love with my baby on an emotional level until maybe around 6 weeks(?). I did have some baby blues, but not PPD. I definitely felt like other people were more excited about the baby than I was though, and that was hard to deal with on top of everything else (gah, mommy guilt is a nightmare).

My baby sleeps through burping too! That's when I know she's really tired :)

She had been smiling a lot, so of course I tried to take a picture. And of course she refused to smile again. Darn kids...

Didn't know about the Walmart ones having it! We primarily use cloth at home, but she needs disposables for daycare and it's what I have in my diaper bag. Because the cloth ones are pretty bulky, all disposables just feel thin to me (although I could probably tell if it was really soaked).

We ended up getting two as baby shower gifts (probably thanks to our giraffe theme). I passed one of them on to a friend who's expecting. We had no idea about the squeaker until right before baby was born. My husband flipped! Definitely sounds like a dog toy.

If you want to hear the squeaker, here's a video I took a few weeks ago, and in it, I accidentally sat on it (you can't see it, but you can hear it). It's not a soft toy, so it was not pleasant!

Question about using these: I get these also but they have my name on them. Does that matter? We breastfeed, so I want to give them away as well.

You need to find a new pediatrician.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

[–]one_hot_llama 0 points1 point ago

Agree. My little one screams all freakin' day, but once she's out, she is OUT. I mean, you would notice if someone was clipping your fingernails in your sleep, right? If not, you're sleeping like a baby!

I'm also an Atlanta native and married a military man, so have been moving around every 2-3 years. Embrace the change! A move can be scary, but also very fun and sometimes liberating. Learn whatever you can about the new culture, and pick and choose the best parts of that. (example: I'm currently in the Gulf Coast a.k.a. Mardi Gras land, and that has been a lot of fun to learn about and participate in.) If anything, I hear Denver has a Chick-Fil-A, so head there when you need a little taste of home.

We have 5 covers and 18 prefolds. Most of my friends have in the 6-8 range for covers. We need at least one more cover and maybe a few more prefolds because my baby has started pooping up a storm lately (3.5 months). We basically have 2 covers out at a time--one in active use, and one sorta "drying" after being used. We do laundry every 2-3 days and it usually smells a lot so I wouldn't want to go much longer. If you bought 2 of the Econobum $50 packs, you'd have 24 prefolds, 6 covers, and 2 pail liners. That's basically a full stash.

And I'm a huge fan of Econobum! We have the pink-trimmed cover and a few prefolds. Great quality on both, but my next cover purchase will be another Flip.

Edit: my baby uses disposables in daycare 1-2x a week, and we carry disposables in the diaper bag.

My baby had a newborn sleeper with duckie feet and a big duckie on the butt. I loved that thing.
