are SSDs worth the price by MuffinatorXIIIin buildapc

[–]ominousproportions 0 points1 point ago

For general (non-gaming, non-editing) use, I'd go as far as saying SSD is a must. The performance increase is just that great imo. But if you can barely afford decent cpu and gpu (not to mention memory and PSU) it's better to just wait till you can actually afford such.

As far as gaming is conserned, the load times will be drastically improved, but you have to keep in mind the space-restrictions of SSDs. You can't put more than a few modern games on e.g. 128gb SSD. For gaming only, the appeal of SSD decreases quite significantly, because the main benefit is within the general performance increase within OS.

Horror game concept based on your own fears. by tbear865in gaming

[–]ominousproportions 0 points1 point ago

The effect of the "scary monster" appearing behind would have been miles better if you heard a noise from behind like there was someone breathing, and when you looked back, there wasn't actually anything. Horror is much, much better when you don't just push the monster to the player's face, rather let them see e.g. a glimpse of the monster and/or hear it. Also, the game should have very limited combat abilities. Too powerful arsenal destroys any horror game, imho. Amnesia understood this perfectly.

The music after the initial description; is that from Spyro 2? Can't help but remember it sounded exactly like that.

Skyri... mmm, I mean, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia by dragonworthyin pics

I don't get it. Skyrim looks nothing like this, why people keep insisting every photo taken in the woods is somehow related to it? Well anyway, nice picture. The trees are bit too sharp though, and I think this picture doesn't benefit from HDR at all.

You could always take your keyboard to work. ;)

Actually even such setup would need less than 750W according to my calculations ;) I guess that's because the kepler gpus require far less power than previous gen gpus. But yeah, it's not like it's end of the world to have more watts than necessary, there is really not much downside to it than the added cost.

If the keyboard is too loud (not sure if that's what you ment), definitely consider getting 100-120 o-rings that you insert below the keycap. They reduce the noise drastically without sacrificing the feel (they muffle the sound the key makes when it hits the bottom). More info here.

Filcos are (much) higher quality than other cheaper boards, so it is a good investment for durability, though admittedly not for everyone.

The 1200W PSU seems insane, considering the current build needs less than 650W (according to a quick calculus I did), but otherwise very nice looking build and with some sweet cable management and sleeving.

In the DVD's audio commentary it says he smokes tobacco from wooden pipe, so that's likely just a photo taken between filming session.

[Build Help] Best Z77 motherboard? by ManiacCometin buildapc

[–]ominousproportions 0 points1 point ago

Apparently some of the older memories have been updated and support Z77, including mine. At least this is what I would assume (I found I had "z77 support -sticker" on the memorykit). So thankfully I did get my system fully functional with said memory.

Overpopulation is 'fixed' by education, not regulation. Of course nothing is always that simple, but that's the core idea people should wrap their head around.

The story was absolutely terrible. Cliché, boring and predictable. So was the way guns and gunplay was handled. Put those two things aside and you have pretty awesome game despite some smaller flaws.

Asrock z77 Extreme 4. Be sure to check out which memories are supported though (from the product page).

That sucks.. I'll try tomorrow if it indeed doesn't work at all (strangely enough I don't even get a beep, but I do get UEFI setup screen), and then proceed to return the memory if so.

As current owner of said board, I can say it is very good value for your money. The UEFI is excellent, all the features I need are there and can't really find anything to complain about. Then again I have owned only like 3 mobos. ;)

It didn't happen to be t G.Skill RipJaws-X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL? I literally got a build ready with that memory and mobo but no HDD so haven't tried out if it's working yet. It's not on the list. I can't have this bad luck..

Upgrade advice? (2500K vs 3570K, motherboard suggestion?) by rhonagein buildapc

[–]ominousproportions 0 points1 point ago

There is really not much difference at all if you overclock the 2500k to let's say 4,5Ghz (equals about 4,2Ghz on 3570k if I'm correct, but 3570k is definitely hotter if you go beyond that). You should also get a z77 mobo regardless, I see no drawbacks on getting new-gen mobo, especially considering how cheap something like Astrock's Extreme4 is.

I'd imagine that to depend on the material in question, so that the printer couldn't operate at high speeds before the created object mass was solidified.

If you can get 3570k $30 cheaper, it's no-brainer to get it. But be sure to get Z77-mobo, something like ASRock Z77 Extreme4.
