Ghosthunters has been on the air since 2004. How long would you keep watching a show called "Moosehunters", if they never saw or heard a single fucking Moose? by massivecoilerin AskReddit

The Best job on the crew has to be the guy tossing pebbles around from off-camera so the cast can freak out.

Why are all these processes running? by ggabriele3in Android

[–]oldcrow 4 points5 points ago

Instead of killing the tasks, identify them and freeze them in Titanium Backup or re-name them in Root explorer. (Ie. "BadTask.apk to BadTask.old)

By doing this I've gotten my average Kernal battery use down from 35% to about 20% and have more free memory.

All without the battery-using Kill/restart cycle.

I have a DroidX from Verizon and it is time to upgrade my phone. What phone do you suggest I buy? by gwink3in Android

[–]oldcrow 1 point2 points ago

I upgraded from the Droid X to a Bionic. I rooted it in about 5 minutes, froze the BLUR and Bloat - I love this phone!

I don't upgrade that often. What's the oldest daily used equipment you have? by insight_imagingin photography

Cheap Batteries vs. Brand-Name Batteries by Nooby_Scoobyin photography

[–]oldcrow 0 points1 point ago

Depends.
If you have to switch batteries 3 times more often, maybe not. And they might not last 3 years, it's hard to say. Lithium-ion chemistry is pretty well established and nobody has any magic ingredients that make one battery significantly better than another.
I do suspect however that some el-cheapo factories introduce inert materials (carbon or silica or straw - who knows?) into the electrolyte to get more units per batch. This is where you see brand new cells that don't even hit 50% of the labeled capacity.

Cheap Batteries vs. Brand-Name Batteries by Nooby_Scoobyin photography

[–]oldcrow 4 points5 points ago

This question comes up a lot.

I won't recommend my company's batteries or our competition's here on Reddit.

That being said, I think I know who produces the Pearstone line of batteries for B&H Photo and they seem fine.

You should note that some OEMs over-rate the capacity of their batteries. I've been cracking open and testing loads of them and seeing what kinds of cells they are using. 1500mAh is probably the maximum theoretical capacity, but OEM's allow a 20% variation (almost always 20% lower) to be considered a "passing" battery.

I'd be willing to bet the one you linked to would give anywhere between 50% and 75% the capacity of your OEM battery. You can buy three or four of them and be ahead of the game versus the $44.95 OEM battery.

The sad fact is that the average consumer can't test the mAh capacity on their own and you have to go with a vendor you trust. Look for a company willing to give a warranty on the battery. The one you linked to has a three-warranty and that seems kind of silly to me. With heavy use, you can wear out any battery in two years. I suspect these are cheap enough to just hand out replacements to the few who actually make a claim on the warranty.

For $8.03 it's probably worth a try, but don't expect stellar performance.

Homemade, pop-up flash powered ring light for Canon Rebel. Photo example included. by GreenLeavesDryHeavesin photography

[–]oldcrow 5 points6 points ago

Nice job!

I also made a ring flash for my rebel about 3 years ago. I've been refining the design and am at version 9.5 I call it the YARF (Yet Another Ring Flash) and I'm quite happy with the results.

I love that people are building their own lighting equipment. Each one has a unique quality of light and nothing off-the-shelf can quite duplicate the look.

Have you tried any photos of people?

Nah, there is active price-matching among gas stations already.
And apps like Gas Buddy show us that there are people are willing to go out of their way to save a few cents per gallon. And keep in mind that gas is almost a loss-leader. It's the soda/coffee/donuts/mystery-meat-spinning-on-rollers that bring in the real margin.

A quarter tank would be enough to give you plenty of choices of offers to consider.

Actually, you wouldn't need to say how much you needed. Just than that you were in the market for gas.

I HATE the new Droid Razr commercial with the Mother and Daughter. Reddit, what commercial (part or present) makes you change the channel every time? by dbtennis13in AskReddit

[–]oldcrow 0 points1 point ago

For some people, yes of course this is a disincentive.

But companies focus-group test the shit of these ads. I'm guessing you and I aren't the target demographic this ad was aimed at. It's annoying to a lot of people, but enough people liked it that Verizon dropped a boatload of money because they got enough positive feedback.

As the great ad writer David Ogilvy said; "Sell the sizzle, not the steak". Some people respond to the intrinsic qualities of the product. Some people respond to emotions.

I'm waiting for the app that puts your almost-empty gas tank on a bidding site. Gas stations along your route then get to bid and you are alerted of the station with the lowest price.

Who uses a screen protector? by Jakesandosein Android

[–]oldcrow 0 points1 point ago

I had the Droid X for two years, and now have the Bionic. Not a scratch on either, but I'm aware of the dangers. Mighty Gorilla Glass can be easily scratched by everyday sand. Both are silica, and have the same hardness. So keys aren't the problem - but just a few grains of sand can really do a number on your screen.

I thought I'd be safe from sand here in Iowa, but we dump tons of it on the roads in winter.

Smoke Photography [Impact] [Technical] [Composition] [Color Balance] [Lighting] by jacoberrin photocritique

[–]oldcrow 1 point2 points ago

IS while on a tripod will sometimes reduce sharpness.
I know it happens on my XSi. The stabilization mechanism will "hunt" for something to lock onto. I've done a lot of night photography and compared the results with IS on and off. The non-stabilized shots were sharper.

Give it a try!

Thad being said, beautiful shot. I've recently done a lot of smoke shots and they are difficult but rewarding.

TIL trying to calibrate your battery by deleting batterystats.bin does not work by rendlerin Android

[–]oldcrow 10 points11 points ago

No.

There is an internal circuit that shuts off voltage to the device before it is totally discharged. To the device, it appears completely dead, but there is still voltage. If a battery is left in this state for too long, it will continue to self-discharge at about a rate of 1% per day. The battery will then enter "sleep mode" and won't take a normal charge until it's given 5V for about 30 seconds. (This is rare for the average user, it's meant to protect batteries that are left in a warehouse for a really long time)

I'm a buyer for a national battery distributor and I buy cell phone batteries among others. When I get back to work on Monday, I'll look into the 40-60 cycle claim.

The rest is spot-on.

So I am due for an upgrade. And I am limited to about $100. I'm not sure which of these 3 to choose from. Thanks for your help in advance by Zackthestogiemanin Android

Droid Bionic overheated in my sleep by ElTimabloin Android

[–]oldcrow 1 point2 points ago

This may also be a sign that the charge control chip in your battery is going bad. When this happens, the battery continues to accept voltage even though it's fully charged.

Keep an eye on this. The battery could swell and damage the phone. The good news is that the Bionic has a plastic back. Instead of cracking the screen, the back would pop open.
