This is my favorite version.

I betrayed my coach, failed my friends and fucked everything up. by Cato-The-Elderin offmychest

It's not what you do, but how you respond to what you do. It sounds like this is a lesson, but no one died, and if that's the case, learn from it and count yourself lucky. Some things can be recovered from -- they just take time. This sounds like one of those.

If you're up for what may seem like a total tangent, check out the book Demian by Herman Hesse. There's some good and interesting lessons in there if you can get through to them, and some situational similarities.

What's the worst thing you have ever seen someone you thought you respected do? by hoikarnagein AskReddit

[–]officeroffkilter 1 point2 points ago

My parents split when I was around ten and I stayed with my dad. My dad and his GF moved East by an hour or so and they took my dog with them, but I had to stay to finish the school year, so I lived with my grandma. In the month or two before school finished, my dad gave my dog to the neighbor, and that neighbor gave it to an older couple, who took him to their place overseas, which meant he got to sit in quarantine for months. Fucking people. I had him since I was 4.

Only slightly related to anything, I think the way westerners use Karma, they don't quite understand it's meaning, but I'm ok with that, and here's how I think it should be applied (well, if I believed in that world view): you come back as your own pet (or in the case of parents / responsible people, who suck, the pet you were responsible for). Everything works out great, for the good people, and for the bad.

Any love around here for Pinback? :) by fingersquidin Music

[–]officeroffkilter 0 points1 point ago

Weird. I usually fish around to see what other comments redditors make, but didn't do that 'til after I posted. Have you heard any of their other proto-pinback projects (Three Mile Pilot / Heavy Vegetable / Rumah Sakit?). I used to live in San Diego and know some of those guys, so I've seen a long tradition of interesting / crazy, if quite listenable music. Let me know if you're interested in that lineage and I can point you to some other stuff. Ciao!

Why is it unconstitutional for U.S. politicians to be drug tested, but not unconstitutional for U.S. citizens to be drug tested? by HighSorcererin politics

[–]officeroffkilter 0 points1 point ago

On another note, why don't we just make it a requirement of the job? Everyone has to take a drug test to be a corporate shill (I meant to type legislator -- the letters on the keyboard are so close together -- anyone could have made that mistake).

TSA mistakes insulin pump for gun, causing LAX security scare by missceein OperationGrabAss

[–]officeroffkilter 2 points3 points ago

Notice that it looks exactly like a pager (I mean gun, of course):

http://www.medtronicdiabetes.net/products/paradigmrevelpump

(and that it has a cable that is attached to you and plugged in to your gut).

It's the new pager size cube gun. Very dangerous. It's even worse with the models that have round edges. So confusing.

TBH, I'm surprised that it isn't confused with a bomb a lot more often, given the "theater is the life of you*" operational tactics at play here.

  • Double Nickel bonus for anyone in on that reference and the antithetical irony.

OK. I've had enough bitter for at least 5 minutes. As you were, and thanks for allowing me at least the illusion of an audience. Carry on.

David Cameron accuses Argentina of "colonialism" because it lays claim to a British colony. by newsensin worldpolitics

I just don't see the difference between British nationalism and Argentine, except the Argentine government is responsible for several million fewer deaths in their quest for peen / power than is / was the U.K.

co·lo·ni·al·ism   [kuh-loh-nee-uh-liz-uhm] Show IPA
noun
1. the control or governing influence of a nation over a dependent country, territory, or people.
2. the system or policy by which a nation maintains or advocates such control or influence.
3. the state or condition of being colonial.
4. an idea, custom, or practice peculiar to a colony.

I didn't realize I needed to put a /s after things that really looked to be sarcastic on their face. It's sarcastic and humorous that the British government is accusing anyone of being colonial. I wasn't disputing The Argentine issue, it's the gall of Britain to accuse anyone of colonialism that I found funny, if not for the millions of human beings they've enslaved over the centuries in pursuing their colonial games.

Life plus 70, or 120 years after creation / first use.

"The majority, however, rebuffed charges that a decision in favor of Congress’ move would amount to affording lawmakers the right to legislate perpetual copyright terms."

More or less, two human lifetimes. It's not technically perpetual, but it is perpetual in any meaningful sense of the phrase, with respect to human lifetimes.

The source from which these materials were freely taken is being depleted, and we're going to be left with a pay-to-play model of culture as a byproduct of this unwise decision. In part, this is because Congress has done exactly what the courts suggest they would not.
