TROPHY CASE

What is your most useless skill? by mnelawarin AskReddit

[–]ocarina_21 0 points1 point ago

Even with that prompt I couldn't remember them all. New Hampshire? Oklahoma? Someday maybe I'll remember places like that. (I'm not American though, so I think it's close enough that I got most of them.)

Really cool when you've got the chance, it's just complicated that you have to have a building built around your instrument. I gripe about the lack of portability of my tuba, but really, it could be a lot worse.

That'd be good for yourself. It'd be a curse if anyone else was off though. As useful as I think I'd find it, it's probably for the best sanity-wise that I don't have it.

The greatest philosophical question of our time. by WriteOnSCin funny

My newlywed heterosexual roommates had their bachelor party together. I think it's more about specific interests and friends. Their friends were the same group, so they had the party together. People are people, regardless of their sexual orientation. If the interests and friends of any couple are the same, they'll have the party together. If their interests and friends differ on some level, they'll have the party separately.

Mitt Romney is being criticized for bullying someone when he was 17. What did you do in high school that disqualifies you from running for public office? by Robopuppyin AskReddit

[–]ocarina_21 17 points18 points ago

I was a coach for one of my high school's improv teams. We lacked discipline, so at an evening practice, I decided I would teach them discipline by teaching them a very discliplined form of marching, the "goose step". If the surveillance footage from that night was kept, then there's video of me teaching my friends how to march in a manner commonly associated with the militaries of certain unpopular historical regimes.

tl;dr: Nazi marching club.

Changed our roommate's autocorrect to be much like how he spoke when drunk. We also changed 'the' to 'the fucking', but we also had '.' correct to ', bitch.'

It was the fucking best idea we could come up with that night anyway, bitch.

As a Canadian, no. I'm convinced it's just a long-term trick the Americans are trying to play. Not once have I encountered a person that says "aboot" except as an outsider trying to make fun of their perception of Canadians.

Reddit, what common phrases really irk you? by Aithosin AskReddit

[–]ocarina_21 0 points1 point ago

It's not a word. It's non-standard usage, which means it's in the dictionary not to say that it's acceptable, (in fact by labelling it non-standard usage, the dictionary is saying it's not acceptable) but so that you can look up what the fuck someone is trying to say when they use it.

So I just found out one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors is a homophobic bigot. Reddit, what are some of your heroes that ended up being a disappointment? by ApocalypseWoodsmanin AskReddit

[–]ocarina_21 1 point2 points ago

It's common practice. Most people charge for autographs. It's partly to cover travel and appearance fees, and then partly as a deterrent for people cluttering lines for the hell of it. If they had to pay for it, then they're a little less likely to try and make a profit, and if they do, at least they supported the person whose autograph they're flipping. Having someone important autograph something increases its value for collectors. Some people use this fact to make a buck, and so offering the thing for free when it'll make something much more valuable is silly when it means that people who don't actually care about the person doing the signing will fill the line to make a buck, and make it more difficult for fans to get through. It also means that your convention attendance fee is much cheaper, because they'd have to absorb the appearance fees somewhere, and not charging you for things you don't intend to have is pretty reasonable too. Autographs are a commodity, and his selling them does not make him a douche, in the same way that the grocery store cashier is not a douche for not letting you have bananas for free.

Hell, Morena Baccarin unfollowed him to avoid his bullshit. He seems like a perfectly nice guy in person, but then you watch him on twitter trying to pick a fight with Wil Wheaton, the champion of not being a dick on the internet...

Reusing content I could forgive, it's adding their watermark to everything to imply that it's their original content that's the problem.

The behaviour of some of the people at the con in general was questionable. Folks camping lines of people they didn't care about to kill time and sell autographs to the internet, (especially frustrating for folks like me who cared about lots of people and had to prioritize... I only managed to get through the lines for autographs from you and Adam Baldwin) cutting in lines for panels, making rude comments about some of the guests, generally acting in ways unbecoming of the appropriate way people should behave at an event like that.

On behalf of the non-dickbag attendees of the expo, I must apologize for some of the less respectful folks. As Canadians, we're not all like that.

DAE ever randomly feel really sympathetic and connected to ants or spiders and then save their lives by taking them outside or making sure they don't get crushed? by supersimon213in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]ocarina_21 0 points1 point ago

Makes sense with ants, because they can live outside, but most spiders you find in your house... Their habitat is inside. They don't belong outside. I leave them alone because putting them outside isn't really appropriate, as if they know what's good for them, they'll just make their way back in. Either way, the only circumstance in which I don't keep them alive is if the museum doesn't have a specimen in the collection, in which case I catch it and freeze it or give it alcohol, etc. so it dies with its body intact.

Is it strange for a man to keep a journal or diary? by isitstrange100in AskReddit

[–]ocarina_21 0 points1 point ago

Yes, this. It's a lot of stuff that might seem really unimportant now, but is relevant down the line. Even if it's just mundane stuff about daily life, it's part of filling out an appropriate picture of history.

My friend's van would not start if you hadn't unlocked the door with the remote recently. I pulled over and shut it off to check a map and call someone. I guess it had been long enough, as it wouldn't start back up again. Took me a while to remember that that was even a thing and get back on the road.

Everyone else will pass them first if they're only going 75. Also, it'd be about 9:50 in Pense or Belle Plaine. If they were going at popular highway speed, they'd pass at Lewvan Drive around 9:30.

Returned a lost MacBook to its owner by snooping. Is (a lil) invasion of privacy worth it to get your things back? by donsherioin AskReddit

[–]ocarina_21 1 point2 points ago

Obviously start with less pry-like things to find the information. Address book or opening an essay or something is an obvious choice. That said, losing stuff, especially like a WHOLE COMPUTER is worth one guy maybe seeing something. Use your discretion, but if they are so concerned about people finding out stuff that's on their computer, then they'll be happier that it's returned to them and not in the wild.
