Who else doesn't want the RMAH to open anytime soon? by blackmatter615in Diablo

I'm sure it's not that heavy. It's like 90% reads and databases can handle millions of reads per second easily.

Why can you not repair items at the Auction House itself? by AbsolutValuin Diablo

[–]nupogodi 1 point2 points ago

This is exactly how eBay works, and how auctions should work when all interested parties are not in a room together. It's not fair to miss out on a bid because you weren't there.

He seems to be doing OK in Act 2, but I'm sure it will get harder. He's being /very/ smug about it, so I'm happy about that. I'm still near Wortham myself. It's tough as DH.

I just watched my Barb friend tank 7 inferno trash mobs and 1 elite in act 1. He actually stopped to type two full sentences to me while they were beating him down.

He said the key is resistance gear. He went from 75k hp to 30k in exchange for nearly 300 in every resist and he said it became immensely more survivable. Barbs can tank!

Can we have a repair all button in the Auction House? by armchair_terroristin Diablo

[–]nupogodi 0 points1 point ago

It's really not. I can't think of anything about the system that would be resource-intensive. Talk all you want about the economy and managing how people auction stuff etc, but don't dare try to pin it on system resources. This kind of application is not hard to set up even for millions of users. It's not trivial but it's not hard.

Diablo 2 was demolished by items importing and bots. Private "hacks/cracks" are being bid on from freelance programming websites for Diablo 3 right now. I plan on fighting it this time from an armchair and a bit of Perl, need your help. by DotBashAreSeein Diablo

[–]nupogodi 0 points1 point ago

This is true. There was a full maphack for beta, and a speedhack, but those have been fixed. There is no full maphack for D3 nor is one probably possible, although the current stuff out there will apparently reveal the map in larger chunks than regular by showing you all the server sent instead of just where you walked. This isn't too much of a problem, really - not that I consider maphacks a problem. Exploring is fucking tedious at the higher difficulties because you're constantly getting smacked around. I can handle it, it's just frustrating instead of fun.

I'm always getting 30mbit down and normally latency is very very good! Was just bad luck yesterday. TekSavvy customer support is great and they're really active on dslreports.com. I'd need to get 50mbit down to consider switching.

Bankers Got Too Aggressive With Pricing Facebook As They Struggled To Keep Shares Above $38 by dealsupin technology

it is mostly for people who are tech illiterate and constitutes 99% of what the internet is for these types of people.

I'm not tech illiterate. I'm a CS student and a software developer. I use Facebook to share photos with my friends, plan events, use the instant messenger to talk to people and reconnect with people who I maybe haven't been paying a lot of attention to. It also lets me share interesting news articles that I found and see people's comments on them. I don't add people I don't know and no one I don't add can see anything but my name and profile picture.

As a free service, I find it very useful. I would probably even pay like $5/mo for it, although others wouldn't which defeats the purpose. Are you saying I am the 1%? I don't think so. I have 160 friends who are more or less like me, although they don't necessarily work with technology for a living.

If you're claiming that Facebook is full of idiots, well, I have news for you bub - the planet is full of idiots. You just have to be selective with who you associate with, in meatspace or otherwise.

Apparently I was "on site" for 4 hours.

No, because you didn't interact with it. They don't care if you log out, most people don't log out. If they bother to collect these sort of metrics themselves (instead of that number being quoted coming from independent researchers) they would definitely want to do them right.

A day at the movies by Shwa9in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Sometimes people rent out movie theaters for corporate events and such where the front row is reserved for the speakers... The cost of building those seats is probably irrelevant within the grand scheme of building a modern cineplex.

Are you in Kitchener/Waterloo by chance? I have TekSavvy cable which uses Rogers cable and I was getting massive lag spikes all day, like even pinging google.ca was 800-1000ms. The game was obviously unplayable and I died quite a few times trying, which sort of ruined my plans to beat NM today. Of course, once I started measuring my ping so I could send it to TekSavvy support the problem went away.

According to my calculations the release of the three Diablo games form a polynomial function, and I can conclude that Diablo 4 is due to release fall 2030 by OlleOliverin gaming

[–]nupogodi 1 point2 points ago

I think the simple answer is because most things we want to analyze follow the pattern of a low degree polynomial. Higher order polynomials look whacky when you plot them, and while definitely will get close to your data you sure aren't finding a pattern that would be too useful. They are of course good for interpolation, but whether your interpolation function will reveal anything of note is up to you to decide. For example, taking this Diablo 3 parabola as an example, do the points between years represent anything meaningful about # of games released? How "close to release" was D3 two or three years ago, numerically?

Truly, I hated my Statistics courses.

[–]nupogodi 2 points3 points ago

If it was reasonable to do so. You could check by calculating an R-value for a few different models, but in general an n-1 degree polynomial for n data points will always fit perfectly. And adds nothing to the analysis.

I believe he just means that a line is a polynomial, although that doesn't invalidate what you said.

Actually you don't have to go through all that nonsense to plug that cable in. It's easily accessible, it's annoying - thin ribbon cables are not easy to plug in.

Replacing the keyboard requires tearing down the whole computer, like you were replacing the logic board.

edit: My experience is with the 17 inch unibody, though.
