'Anonymous' has just released the personal information of some of Oakland's top city officials by misterActionin occupywallstreet

[–]notatoad 1 point2 points ago

just becuase anon members coordinate with each other, doesn't mean that all of anon is organized. if me and ten friends are an organized hacker group that works under the 'anonymous' name, it doesn't make any of the other hackers working under the same name organized, but they're no less a part of anonymous.

it is and has always been a merit-based group. you do something cool and call yourself anon, you are part of anon. if you don't do anything cool you can call yourself anon but you're not really part of it.

anymore? anon has never been an organized group - that's the point. they may have organized factions.

Virgin does it right...... by Atrosityyin AdviceAnimals

[–]notatoad 1 point2 points ago

that's not how copyright works. just because mirroring something gets you around the youtube infringement detection stuff, it doesn't actually mean that the copyright's been voided.

Virgin does it right...... by Atrosityyin AdviceAnimals

[–]notatoad 1 point2 points ago

copyright doesn't work that way. you have copyright whether you choose to enforce it or not, you can decide to start enforcing your copyrights at any time. all the people making memes could still be liable if the original photographer decided they wanted to seek licencing fees, and at the same time the original photographer could decide to only go after virgin and continue to ignore the memes.

trademark is the 'use it or lose it' form of intellectual property, that you can lose the rights to if you don't vigorously defend it.

i can't speak for all of reddit, but i don't oppose the attempts to takedown websites devoted to piracy. i oppose the takedown without due process, the american government's efforts to influence copyright policy in sovereign nations, and the ineffective measures that seemed more targeted at suppressing free speech than they were at actually curbing piracy.

that said, until the MPAA gets their shit together i'm going to continue pirating everything.

Is there a web design forum that rates designs and assigns allows you to search them by category? by gadimusin web_design

don't fall into the same trap as so many other physical establishments (cafes, restaraunts, etc): don't over-design your site. the one you linked to is a perfect example of an over-designed site. here's how to make a good website for a butcher shop:

  • hire a photographer to take some great pictures of the product
  • on a clean background, put one of those pictures front and center. it should be big, filling almost the whole screen. you can use a carousel or radomize what image gets shown on page load, but don't show more than one big picture at a time.
  • in the remaining space, put the shop's logo, street address, and phone number. link to your place page on google maps.
  • that's it. don't be tempted to do anything else. it distracts from the main message. no mission statement, no blurbs, no photos of the staff.
  • if the shop has a dine-in restaurant component, include a large and obvious link to a menu, including prices. if you are just selling cuts of meat, do not include a product list or a price list.
  • if the shop can commit to keeping a twitter or facebook page updated with daily deals or recipes, you can link to that. if they're not going to keep it updated at least daily, it's going to reflect badly on the shop.

99.99% of your traffic will be people coming from google who are already planning on patronizing your establishment. all they want is to know where you are and how they can spend their money. the site isn't making a sale, it just has to reassure potential customers that you're serious quickly give them the information they need.

illegal content is not an issue. it's not the ISP's place to enforce what people can and can't see. they are a conduit to the internet, not a filter for it. if there's something illegal on the internet, the government should do what they can to take that content down. if they can't take it down, they should accept that fact and move on. some things are outside their jurisdiction.

all governments need to accept that there is and always will be content on the internet that violates their laws, and nothing will ever change this as long as the internet exists. if you get caught surfing kiddie porn or (yes, i'm gonna say it) infringing copyright you should be punished appropriately, it's not the government's place to censor those things in the first place. they should punish their citizens who produce or consume illegal content rather than punishing the medium for that content.

5 Unbreakable Rules of Landing Page Design by oneforredditin web_design

[–]notatoad 0 points1 point ago

i'm not sure what you think a landing page is. in my understanding, the landing page is your ad - it's designed to catch users "landing" on your site from somewhere else, as opposed to a home page which is designed to cater to users who have specifically sought out your site.
a landing page is not a loading screen or an interstitial or a welcome screen. there's no reason you can't have a credit card form right there on your landing page. look at the ones in the article: those are great examples. big text that you can't help but read, few details, clear selling points, and everything you need to get started. if you have a landing page, for the majority of your users it should be the only page they see until you make the sale. it's not blocking the content, it is the content.
