I am Sheriff Richard Mack. I'm challenging SOPA and PCIP Sponsor Lamar Smith (R-TX) to a Primary in a heavily conservative district. AMA by sheriffmack4congressin IAmA

illegal content is not an issue. it's not the ISP's place to enforce what people can and can't see. they are a conduit to the internet, not a filter for it. if there's something illegal on the internet, the government should do what they can to take that content down. if they can't take it down, they should accept that fact and move on. some things are outside their jurisdiction.

all governments need to accept that there is and always will be content on the internet that violates their laws, and nothing will ever change this as long as the internet exists. if you get caught surfing kiddie porn or (yes, i'm gonna say it) infringing copyright you should be punished appropriately, it's not the government's place to censor those things in the first place. they should punish their citizens who produce or consume illegal content rather than punishing the medium for that content.

5 Unbreakable Rules of Landing Page Design by oneforredditin web_design

[–]notatoad 0 points1 point ago

i'm not sure what you think a landing page is. in my understanding, the landing page is your ad - it's designed to catch users "landing" on your site from somewhere else, as opposed to a home page which is designed to cater to users who have specifically sought out your site.
a landing page is not a loading screen or an interstitial or a welcome screen. there's no reason you can't have a credit card form right there on your landing page. look at the ones in the article: those are great examples. big text that you can't help but read, few details, clear selling points, and everything you need to get started. if you have a landing page, for the majority of your users it should be the only page they see until you make the sale. it's not blocking the content, it is the content.

My boss doesn't understand technology. by ShitMyBossSaysin fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]notatoad -1 points0 points ago

this is what happens when the technologists spout jargon to the masses. why should your boss know how that 'burn' is the correct term for writing data to a CD? Burn is a word that means something in english, but writing a CD is not actually burning it. how did this term happen? why can't we just say "write a CD"?

nobody except web developers should know what a cookie is. support people, browser makers, stop using this word. your users shouldn't be deleting cookies, they should be resetting their browser.

users shouldn't know what 3G is. all they should care about is whether or not they have internet access. whether it's 3G or 4G or EDGE or GSM shouldn't matter, it is internet access and it's as fast as it is.

i feel sorry for the average user, having to struggle their way through all these terms that get thrown at them every day that are just meaningless jargon.

i don't think she thinks she's hot. i think she must have about as close to zero self esteem as possible. how rock-bottom do you have to be to agree to be in a video where you pull down your top to squat and piss in a public street? or even more depressingly, maybe the old man was part of the gig...

a note from archer's costume designer: by bunnysparklesin ArcherFX

i think they're wrong. the tan shirt and yellow hat band is pretty distinctive, imho. american cops (stereotypically) wear all blues and blacks.

that depends what your site is. if you have real content that people come to your site to view, don't put in a landing page. if you have a product that people want to purchase and 82% of your traffic is first-time visitors coming from google, absolutely put in a landing page.

Stone on "Big Beer" and the Super Bowl. by jay2770in beer

[–]notatoad 9 points10 points ago

isn't this exactly what they're saying? budweiser says "drink our beer so you're not like those sissies", stone says "drink our beer so you're not like those slobs", it's basically the same message. consuming beverage X makes you better than person Y.

I'll be living across the street from my school's wifi this August with a roommate. How can we use that signal across multiple computers? by n7qin hardware

[–]notatoad 3 points4 points ago

if you use it as a repeater you cut the bandwidth in half. if you use it as a bridge (i.e. wifi comes in to the router, internet comes out the wired ports on the back) you get the full bandwidth. plug two routers together with an ethernet cable and you get a full-bandwidth repeater.

Dear Boss: For a programmer, 10 minutes = 3 hours by gthankin programming

[–]notatoad 0 points1 point ago

you're right, that would be more productive. i'm currently the sole developer on my project, reviewing other people's code isn't part of my job at the moment so i didn't think about that. (we're doing a complete re-write of our ten-year-old VB product to turn it into a modern python-backed web app, and i'm lucky enough to have been told not to look at any of the old VB stuff so none of the bad concepts get transferred over. my co-workers are all tasked with maintaining and supporting old stuff until we can phase it out)

Dear Boss: For a programmer, 10 minutes = 3 hours by gthankin programming

[–]notatoad 4 points5 points ago

sure they would. it's the context switching problem. if i've been interrupted and i expect to get interrupted again in the next 20 minutes, it's more productive for me to surf HN or proggit for those 20 minutes than it is to write 5 lines of code that i'm going to have to go back and re-write again later anyways because i didn't have my head in it properly. if this happens a couple times a day, that's a couple hours down the drain.

as long as they understand they are wasting your day, then fine. but if they have hired you to do a job and they keep bugging you with other shit, then they had better not expect you to be doing the job you were hired to do as well.

My coworker has been making music for over 20 years, I just left his show and I was the only person in the audience... can you give him some love Reddit? by Skeltenin Music

[–]notatoad 0 points1 point ago

exactly this. it's playing in the background now, and i'm enjoying it, but when the song ends i'll never listen to it again and i won't seek out any more music by the same guy. it's disposable background music. it's not bad, but it's not something that will make anybody a successful artist.
