Hamilton was the first theoretical physicist. Walton split the dam atom for gods sake. While they may not be the greatest (if there is such a thing) , they are certainly more important in a world wide sence than the smaller word smith (which I do find honorable and important). I do not mean to understate Yeats or Joyce. I am currently reading Ulysses ( Buck Mulligan, what a hero!) but there is no such recognition to or our scientific past.

We have a vastly important and understated scientific history that is severely under represented.

Yes I agree, however I feel the literary word smiths are somewhat over represented. The local poet it seems to me is somewhat more rewarded than the international scientist.

No doubt tit will be named after some poetry spoofer. Also the luas bridge on Suir road should have been named after Stoney, he named the electron for gods sake and he was from that area. We pay too much heed to our literary history and not enough to our scientific impact, which has been substantial.

count me in on that ( i dont have alot but still) if greece defaulted a year or six months ago there would have been a world of shit and the euro would have been much much more likely to collapse. now down the line contingency plans must be in place, from the language being used now i believe this to be the case.
