Since the chain of trust is broken, and the Black/Grey Hats now have the master keys, they can set up a job that pulls down the latest firmware update, extract the new master key, and stores that somewhere. They then have a chain that allows them to decrypt going forward from the last firmware release to the current one. They could even set it up so that their linux-based GameOS replacement updates its master keyring at whatever update frequency that Sony chooses. The only way for Sony to win is to take their ball and go home. The current consoles can't become guaranteed secure without having a trusted mechanism. I suppose one thing they could do is to start issuing per machine private keys, signing a challenge key of some sort via PSN, and the requiring that every new game 'activate' via PSN. This means that if you want to transition from your compromised firmware to an uncompromised one, you must distribute your new private key in your new firmware release using your compromised firmware. I think that they really can't unbreak this compromise without re-establishing a trusted stack. And that can't happen without a new hardware release -- everything else depends on having a trustworthy stack to load the data through.
