Four-Year Club

Breakfast.

I was actually introduced to the egg-in-a-hole sandwich in my home-econ class in middle school. I've not made or seen in again in about 20 years. I'm wondering what's causing the reddit awareness.

If you're looking for a show to watch, and you've got good Cheese Immunity, try Voyagers! America's 80s answer to Doctor Who.

Indeed. As an 11 year old child, I believed that he had accidently committed suicide, and that that was why the show couldn't go on. I didn't realize that the blasted Nelson families were out to get every sci-fi program that I enjoyed from that point forward (and probably a few from before then, too.)

I was under the impression that Hexum's accidental suicide was the reason why Voyagers! was canceled, rather than a ratings issue.

Subversion, anybody getting excited about it yet?

nnunley 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

It made me extremely depressed. I think it's because they did too good of a job of building the associated mood.

Of course, the only way to win is not to play.

Flesh and Stone Discussion. (Spoilers!)

nnunley 2 points3 points 2 months ago[-]

Yes. The Pando-retcon is coming. It will give Moffat an opportunity to remove the bits of the reboot that don't allow him to tap the rest of the Doctor Who mythos.

Flesh and Stone Discussion. (Spoilers!)

nnunley 7 points8 points 2 months ago[-]

The wibbly-wabbly, timey-whimey stuff is bothering me here. If the angels on the ship were unwritten, shouldn't any of the clerics that were killed by the angels be alive again (including the Bishop)?

Doctor Who - Flesh and Stone just finished...

... I'll explain later.

Speeding up dwarves in 2010

nnunley 0 points1 point 3 months ago[-]

I believe that that Tarn is currently working on merging the fixes from 40d into the 31.03 branch, based on the 4/27 post on his blog. So I'm guessing no speedups until the next release.

I feel like I will die inside a little bit if I upgrade firmware to 3.21+. I'm a linux software developer and bought my ps3 over the xbox 360 because of the "Install Other OS" feature. Is there any hope left?

nnunley 1 point2 points 3 months ago[-]

I don't think it works that way. Firmware is usually loaded to some sort of programmable memory on the main board of the system.

Strong case against the firmware actually being a boot program on the hard drive is the fact that you can upgrade the PS3 hard drive without using external tools.

Used to mean "The tip of a sword." It would be interesting to figure out how it morphed to mean "unusual" in English.

Needed: Cisco VPN client for Windows 7 64-bit, Please Help!

nnunley 5 points6 points 3 months ago[-]

I had some luck with with Shrew VPN for 64 bit support. It's been mixed bag though. Not everyone at my company has been able to get it to work.

:)

As a fellow Pittsburgh resident, I can confirm that it is known as "hookers and blow" here. Then again, It's been hookers and blow everywhere else I've lived.

Squeak Smalltalk 4.0 has been released (download links not updated yet, will be soon)

Looks like the server has been brought down by increased traffic.

Text-based RPGs.

nnunley 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I remember playing that, too. I thought it was pretty cool. Especially since it had an "outside world" to wander through:

Does anyone remember this? And back then did you think that this was the best thing that could happen to you in your life? EVER!

nnunley 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

I was a bit more of a fan of Automan. Came out at about the same time, if I recall correctly.

Backing up data and restoring to another PS3

nnunley 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

The issue is that some games mark their saves as being non-transferable. This means that when you attempt to restore your backup to a new machine, it will just choose to omit that portion of the restore. I had the same issue occur for me restoring to a replacement 60 gb ps3 after my old one failed.

If the content that's missing is downloadable content from the PSN, then you may have to contact Sony if you find that you can't restore your content via downloads. I had to do that to get back my SingStar content.

It will be a long long time before he gets away with that.

The Pentagon is funding research into “a zombie-like form of hibernation." What could possibly go wrong?

nnunley 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

You probably want to keep the survival guide at your desk, just in case of a new outbreak. It's much more practical then trying to leaf through the oral history trying to find out what the experts did.

Downloading From Usenet Goes Mainstream

nnunley 1 point2 points 7 months ago[-]

Sounds like the whole Eternal November issue. Folks did initially get pumped into the Usenet from AOL and Compuserve. And left it once the first web browsers came online to serve them pictures with everything.

I do really miss the days when alt.* was useful, and wasn't drowned in spam.

What's a tape?

Pianobar is a command line client for Pandora. No hacky website automation, this talks to their servers just like the flash application.

nnunley 0 points1 point 8 months ago[-]

I have this problem today -- libao in cygwin 1.7 still has has the debug flag enabled, leading to lots of extra messages.

If you can create a native client build for it, then you can use it as a webapp that runs locally.

Spell it with an "e"

nnunley 2 points3 points 8 months ago[-]

My guess is that the original convention/behavior came from the combination of the heavy keyboard action of the terminals of the day, and the lack of typing skills. That and it saves ink if you're forced to use a teletype console.

EDIT: The rest of us are just lazy bastards who don't want to type more than they must.

I love Ghost in the Shell (watched all of it, incl. series) - is there anything like it? Netflix turns up Final Fantasy crap.

nnunley 0 points1 point 8 months ago[-]

I actually liked Diaspora more. It's in the same vein, only more-so.
