TROPHY CASE

[PC2] All Planechase 2 Spoilers for May 25 by jestergoblinin magicTCG

[–]nkbdizzle 6 points7 points ago

They got rid of that wording a while ago. Thatcher Revolt and Hero of Bladehold, for example. The default is that if you control the effect putting it into play, it will be put into play under your control. Exceptions specify who gets the tokens.

Norn's Dominion only kills nonland permanents when you planeswalk away, not ALL permanents. Thank god...

The thing I don't get about Akoum is why that area of Zendikar has to do with enchantments at all? It was the B/R refuge after all, two colors not normally known for their love of enchantments (or flash).

Strategy: Liliana's Ultimate vs Mimic Vat Ramp by dmkayin magicTCG

[–]nkbdizzle 5 points6 points ago

In this case, though, he'll just imprint the Titan on Vat. Next turn he can activate Vat, attack with the Titan token and kill Sorin, and get four lands in play leaving you most likely dead to repeated Vat / Wolf Run activations.

Yeah, I'm going to take PV's opinion on whether or not a deck requires skill over Mike Flores's.

10 CMC Green Mythic: Primal Surge by Endariusin magicTCG

[–]nkbdizzle 1 point2 points ago

Sure, I guess. It depends on what outcome you're trying to optimize. Most people will take certainty over expected value, and that's essentially what this problem comes down to. If you want to make it so you have fewer flops, playing Genesis Wave is better because the worst 20-30% of Genesis Waves are better than the worst 20-30% of Primal Surges. Not to mention the EV is only 10 if you run only 10% non-permanents in your deck - for 20% non-permanents, the EV is more like 5 (similar to Genesis Wave). AND Genesis Wave gives you more flexibility and the ability to go big and Wave for 20 or more.

10 CMC Green Mythic: Primal Surge by Endariusin magicTCG

The math is definitely right.

Assuming you have 10% nonpermanent cards in your deck, when you cast Primal Surge you have a 10% chance of just flipping over a nonpermanent card on the first try, giving you 0 cards from your Primal Surge.

If you flip over a permanent card on the first flip (90%, since it's 100% - chance of flipping over a nonpermanent card), then again you have a 10% chance of flipping over a nonpermanent card in the 2nd flip (we're assuming that since EDH decks are so large it's difficult to tell the difference after we've removed one permanent card from the first flip). So you have a 90% chance of hitting permanent on the first flip * a 10% chance of hitting nonpermanent on the second flip = 9% for exactly one permanent off of it.

We can keep going: in order to hit X permanents, we need to hit permanents on each of the first X flips (90% each) and then a nonpermanent on the X+1st flip (10%). So the formula for the probability of getting exactly X permanents is 0.1*0.9X

In a table:

Permanent Cards Flipped Probability
0 0.1*0.90 = 0.1
1 0.1*0.91 = 0.09
2 0.1*0.92 = 0.081
3 0.1*0.93 = 0.0729
... ...
N 0.1*0.9N

That said, since this is a Geometric Distribution with p=0.1 (don't worry about it), the expected number of permanents flipped is 10, as you would expect by "It takes 10 cards flipped to reveal one nonpermanent card." However, due to variance, it can very often be less than 3 cards flipped - the possibility of being lucky and getting 20+ cards off of it balances it out and makes the expected number of cards 10.

tl;dr - taw's math is right, I can't write funny tl;drs.

[–]nkbdizzle 1 point2 points ago

This really depends on the way that Miracle actually works as described by the Comprehensive Rules. Right now we don't know that much, but above someone posted what looks like a Comprehensive Rules entry for Miracle, but I'm not sure where they got it from.

According to that rules entry, revealing the Miracle card places a triggered ability on the stack that allows you to cast the card for its Miracle cost. The triggered ability won't be put on the stack until after Desperate Ravings finishes, though, so first you must draw the second card and discard a card at random. After Desperate Ravings finishes resolving, the triggered ability gets put onto the stack. If the Miracle card is still in your hand at that point, you can cast it for its Miracle cost.

Since AVR will be a big set, will it have dual lands? by SuperC0lliderin magicTCG

[–]nkbdizzle 2 points3 points ago

I think there's a difference in Rise, though, since it just followed a block focused on lands. Between Zendikar and Worldwake, there were already the uncommon Refuges and the rare fetchlands from Zendikar, as well as the rare manlands from Worldwake. Printing duals in Rise would have been the 4th set of dual lands in the block, so it's pretty understandable that none were printed there.

Now, however, the mana in both Standard and Block is fairly bad and there have only been one set of dual lands printed in Innistrad block so far, including 0 allied dual lands. I'd put money on a set of allied dual lands in Avacyn Restored, although I agree that it's not a guarantee.

There is actually one open Atheist in the House of Representatives - Pete Stark (D-CA). Just saying, it's possible in some congressional districts. Agreed that it'd be almost impossible for a Senator or higher.

First of all, thank you for doing this and congratulations on your top 4 at PTDKA and your top 20 at GP Seattle!

You came onto the pro tour with many of the old greats (Bob Maher, Kai Budde, etc.) in an era where there were fewer players on the pro tour and less knowledge available via the internet, magic online, frequent large tournaments. You've continued to do well in the modern era while many other Hall of Famers have not. How much of your relative success due you attribute to your skill over other HoFers and how much is due to continued practice and dedication while others have lost interest in the game? Do you think that the PT is more difficult today or back then? Are the best today as good as the old masters?

The 2005-2007 Preconstructed Deck Championships are Coming! by ErtaisLamentin magicTCG

[–]nkbdizzle 0 points1 point ago

Wait, what? I'm sorry, I don't understand how this answers my question. The 9th edition precons have a different number of cards than the decks they will be battling (Ravnica block, Coldsnap, and Time Spiral block precons all have 60 cards). I'm wondering this difference will be accounted for.

The 2005-2007 Preconstructed Deck Championships are Coming! by ErtaisLamentin magicTCG

[–]nkbdizzle 2 points3 points ago

The 9th Edition precons are all 40 cards only, how are you going to normalize this with respect to the other years? Battling 40 vs. 60 seems poor (for example the Dimir deck gets a bye against any 9E precons it plays against) but I don't know how you'd add 20 cards fairly.
