How sure are we that the universe are expanding? by NorwegianMonkeyin askscience

[–]nicksauce 0 points1 point ago

There is tons of evidence, and it's really hard to summarize it all because there's just so much. But there are three big things that are usually cited, and are indicative of when people became very sure of universal expansion. They are Hubble's law - A galaxy's redshift is proportional to its distance, The CMB - The cosmic microwave background is left over radiation from the early universe that indicates that the universe had a hot beginning, BBN - Big bang nucleosynthesis is where you use standard nuclear physics, and the assumption of a hot early universe to predict the relative abundances of light elements in the universe, which turns out to match great with observations.

Who Is The Smallest Government Spender Since Eisenhower? Would You Believe It's Barack Obama? - Forbes by blueskies180in politics

[–]nicksauce 1 point2 points ago

Ok, so I can certainly see how you see that.

But to me the implication is that "Obama is the lowest government spender since Eisenhower in a very specific sense of the phrase since no sane person would believe that government spending has decreased since the 60's when you consider the overall growth of population and the economy". So then that makes me want to open the article to see what this specific sense is, my eyes are drawn to the chart, and it immediately becomes that they are talking about the annualized growth rate.

If we're going to be nitpicky here, I'd like to point out that the tile does not actually make a specific factual claim.

Everything is viable in silver if you can keep your money low and worker count high.

Meh, it's a bit of a misleading headline, but the subtlety is explained very quickly in the article. Headlines are generally designed to draw you in, not to be an abstract.

In ZvZ, how do you beat all-zergling rushes? by Aceindaholein starcraft

[–]nicksauce 2 points3 points ago

The best thing to do is to just blindly make a baneling nest every game

Case 1: Opponent just makes lings. Then you can be defensive with banelings, or you can be offensive with banelings, depending on how you want to play it, but in both cases you are at an advantage.

Case 2: Opponent forgoes banelings and goes for roaches. You have two options then - macro up because you know that for a long time your opponent can't move out (otherwise you'll backstab him with your speedlings) or you can try to hit a fast timing where your ling numbers can overwhelm his small roach count. You should also usually still have time to cancel the baneling nest by the time you see the roach warren.

Case 3: Opponent also goes banelings. This leads to the baneling wars that are ever so common in early game ZvZ.

You know, look, I know inflation is going to get worse in 2010. Whether it’s going to run out of control or it’s going to take until 2011 or 2012, but I know we’re going to have a major currency crisis coming soon. It’s going to dwarf the financial crisis and it’s going to send consumer prices absolutely ballistic, as well as interest rates and unemployment.

How long will you give none of this happening until you admit that he's wrong? And does the fact that what's happening is basically the opposite of this prediction make you question his credibility at all? If not, how wrong of a prediction would he have to make for you to question his credibility?

Obviously you don't deny inflation, but apparently your conveying that normal inflation is ok and not theft.

How is that relevant to the fact that Schiff's prediction that there would be hyperinflation was completely wrong?

I will consider it a wrong prediction by the end of 2012 (well I consider it wrong now because there is no indication whatsoever it will happen this year), but if it happens in 2013/2014 (assume the cause is related to the prediction) then I would reverse my position and give him some credit.

Other things like the hyperinflation that never happened?

If the Moon has less gravity then Earth, and if time dilation is correct, then how come the astronauts of the Apollo missions did not come back younger? by Pupstinkin askscience

[–]nicksauce 1 point2 points ago

The time dilation factor in relativity is 2GM/c2 R, where M is the mass of the body and R is its radius.

For the Earth this is about 10-9 and on the Moon it is about 6*10-11 . Both are very small numbers.

Such effects are incredibly small for objects like the Earth and the moon.

What does our solar system orbit? by GoldBeerCapin askscience

[–]nicksauce 0 points1 point ago

The mass of the SMBH is about 0.01% of the mass of the stars in the Milky way. To say that sun orbits the SMBH is absurd.
