TROPHY CASE

Does a 3.5mm male to male cable output stereo sound when connected through an amp? by noisyturtlein audiophile

[–]nekoniku 4 points5 points ago

If it's a stereo cable, you'll get stereo sound.

You can buy mono 3.5mm male-to-male cables, which would result in a mono signal at output, but as long as you stick with stereo cables, you should be good.

Neil Young Says MP3 Isn't Good Enough; Neither Are CDs by ForeverDownvotedin audiophile

[–]nekoniku 20 points21 points ago

At 66 years old, after 50+ years Playing Music Very Loudly, I would dearly love to see the results of a hearing test on Mr. Young -- and I would like for him to sit down for a double-blind test of 320kbps MP3s versus original source material from master tapes.

Will do. And we'll catch you at a future meetup, I hope.

Bummer. I'd like to see this turn into a regular thing, similar to the trivia contest meetups, so let's hope for future opportunities.

Any mods to make over ear headphones more comfortable when wearing glasses? by pandamein audiophile

[–]nekoniku 0 points1 point ago

I've always been drawn to either IEMs or headphones with foam pads for just this reason. Back in the day, I had a pair of Sennheiser HD414s that were very comfortable with glasses. Anymore, Grado headphones do the job quite well without fatigue.

Let's talk portable players. iPods, others, and smartphones. by glaciatorin audiophile

I don't completely disagree with you. However, I sometimes think most people have been tricked in regard to the useful lifespan of the tech they own. I don't believe something is obsolete until it is unable to perform the main function I need for it to perform -- not when the newer model comes out or when repair is needed.

Case in point: I'm still rocking the iPod Mini I bought in 2005. I replaced the battery when the original died, and swapped the original 6GB mechanical hard drive with a 16GB CF card when that hard drive failed, and am still happily using the thing. Especially now that I have a Cmoy headphone amp to use with it, I'm quite happy with the way the thing works and sounds -- for what it is.

What's parking like in that area? I always struggle to find parking downtown.

I'm starting to think 30+ will work better.
Anyway, I didn't think we'd forbid anyone younger; I just wanted to skew the numbers a little higher, since the average redditor seems to be around 22, plus or minus a few years.

[sorry about the repeat but I wanted to be sure you saw this comment]

Not that I can tell. Beer is a must, and two people indicated they'd like to see Guinness on tap. I'd like to make the meetup somewhere central, like downtown, midtown, or the Vandy/Belmont area.

I'm considering doing another post Sunday Feb 5 to propose Friday 7pm at Flying Saucer. How does that sound?

Best budget speaker option for a small bedroom? by vinyl_keyin audiophile

[–]nekoniku 0 points1 point ago

It's really difficult to recommend anything useful because you've got such a severe size limitation for the speakers. If you can only replace the Minimus-7s with speakers around the same size, you're not going to get a huge improvement.

You'll get more bang for your buck out of headphones, in your case, is what I'm thinking.

Another idea would be to get a subwoofer to fill in the bass your current speakers can't provide.

Serious answer: when I've been the only older person among 20-somethings at a meetup, I've felt out of place and somewhat awkward. I'm not going to tell younger people they can't attend; I just think I'd enjoy a group that averages closer to my age.

R/Audiophile, a question regarding prices by Kab00glein audiophile

[–]nekoniku 0 points1 point ago*

To provide helpful suggestions, it would be nice to know some specifics of what you'd like to get. For example, are you talking about a basic stereo system (2.0 or 2.1) or surround sound (5.1 or 7.1)?

$500 is a good budget for a stereo setup but a decent surround system for that amount of money is going to be difficult.

Also, here's a link to the top-rated posts about computer audio in /r/audiophile. That should get you started, I hope.

If you like the way Polk speakers sound, I would encourage you to check out newegg.com's selection of previous-generation Polk speakers here, which will save you a lot of money.

If you haven't had the chance to listen to Polks yet, I would encourage you to go to a few stores with two or three of your favorite CDs and listen to them. I like Polk myself, but you might hate them.

As Magixren suggested, you will definitely need more amplification than your PC can provide, either in the form of an integrated amp or a receiver.

Another thing worth mentioning is that you can save a ton of money by buying used equipment locally, rather than buying new.
