I have provided scientific evidence and primary sources .... you clearly haven't read any of it. Provide me with evidence of a similar calibre and I will change my mind.

You crap it out and it doesn't get stored because you gave no insulin spike to put you into fat storing mode.

This is not how it works... insulin is triggered by high levels of glucose, amino acids or fatty acids i.e. sugar, protein and fat will cause it to be triggered.

In future I might have to include 'Keto diets and the common myths' as an example during metabolism labs.

If there was an inexpensive pill that would painlessly kill cancer cells, would you start smoking again? by root88in AskReddit

[–]naturalalchemy 1 point2 points ago

One of the things I enjoy since giving up smoking is the fact that I don't 'need' them any more. It used to really bug me that if I ran out or lost my cigarettes I would be desperate to find them or go and get some more.

Maybe if they could stop them being addictive and smell better as well as not killing you I'd consider it.

As for tanning... does the new pill stop you looking like a leather handbag as well?

As you become older do you become attracted to people your age? by Jacksonman94in AskReddit

[–]naturalalchemy 0 points1 point ago

I think it is that in general you are more attracted to the kind of people you socialise with. Most people socialise with people of a similar age and you really don't notice that you are all getting older. It's so gradual that there are only the odd rare moment when you go 'damn, I've got old!'.

I remember reading somewhere that teachers/lecturers are much more likely to be attracted to people younger than them because of the daily contact. That contact probably allows people to see past those attributes that people who are a little older would usually find annoying.

It's completely the wrong thing for him to do, but he can make up, change and remove rules at will.

Of course if he does this too much he will start to lose lots of subscribers and posters. For most subbreddits there is really only a small number of people who regularly post.

You just need to hope that enough people kick up a stink about it he will either be shamed in to behaving better or step down as a mod.

Usually we get people complaining about the lack of original content on Reddit. This is the first time I've seen anyone complain about too much!

Unfortunately, mods can make any rules they like for their subreddit. If enough people complain it's possible that they will change their mind, but there isn't any way you can compel them to do it.

Don't know if that was what did it, but he didn't have problems with thunderstorms and we would take him with us to see fireworks.... didn't bat an eyelid.

I agree that eating refined flours and sugars is not good for you. The main reason is that you are getting calories without the vitamins, minerals and fiber that you get from other sources of carbohydrate.

your body digests them quickly and they turn into energy quickly and if you don't use that energy quickly then it gets stored as fat

This is one of the major issues I have with people touting these kinds of diets. Insulin is not a bad thing, it is your body ensuring you have a a steady supply of energy. If not using up all the energy from food immediately is bad because it will be put in to storage, this would be true no matter what the source of energy is. Where do you believe the excess fat from your last meal goes if it isn't used? Your body needs to store energy otherwise you would have to graze constantly!

I have it easier having studied biology for a long time, but if people where to be a little more skeptical about the information they are given these kinds of myths would not be perpetuated.

A review of studies looking at low carb diets found that they were no more effective than other diets and that weight loss was due to reduced calorie intake. There is no change in metabolism. All these diets rely on the fact that by making you concentrate on you food intake and have to prepare different meals than you usual diet you end up eating less calories over all.

As far as that goes I have no problem with people going on a Keto diet for a short time to lose weight, I'm sure it's easier for some people to stick to than other diets. My only issue is the bad science that people use to make it sound like something special or different is happening.

In the same way that my doctorate in Evolutionary Biology does not qualify me to tell physicists about physics, his degree doesn't qualify him to tell those studying human nutrition that he knows better.

He cherry picks his data and ignores the parts that don't fit his hypothesis. All the various variants of diets are just ways of tricking people in to eating less calories. To suggest some calories are better or worse than others is like saying some Kilowatts are better.

I read the primary research. I like facts and his book is full of badly researched rubbish. I admit that I have an advantage is having studied biology and having access to the scientific literature, but people really need to be skeptical when a guy with no training claims to be an expert.

I'm assuming the info you have read is almost entire from his book and other 'health' websites.

Please show me the part of that study that mentions Keto diets. I for one can't find it anywhere.

If you have read my previous comments I have not advocated for 'low fat' diets, but have advocated for a mixed balanced diet.... which the Mediterranean diet the Seven Countries study advocates is one of.

The study also links the importance of weight and exercise. I would imagine Ancel Keys would be surprised to have his findings linked to Keto diets.

Either way, as I stated above, 'carbs' are not 'bad' for you and there is no scientific evidence to tell you otherwise.

[–]naturalalchemy 0 points1 point ago

AS I replied to someone else Gary Taubes is a journalist with no qualifications in biology let alone in human nutrition.

He is making massive amounts of money off ignorance/wishful thinking.

There are many indigenous peoples that eat diets that almost entirely carbohydrates and also do not have healthy issues. The human body is an amazing thing and is well adapted to survive in many environments.

Eat a balanced and mixed diet and you will remain healthy. Eat less calories than you use and you will lose weight.... that is it. Of course there are other issues in that our body craves high energy food low nutrient foods.

There are plenty of peoples around the world that survive on diets that consist of mostly carbs and they don't have the same problems. The increase in heart problems and diabetes has much more to with increases body fat and reduced exercise. In fact studies have found that most of the health issues we have today can be overcome by increasing exercise.

Source 1, Source 2, Source 3

Low carb diets are not fad. They've been around since at least the 1900s.

WW2 occured during the 1900's. However, I'll assuming you are thinking of the Victorian era and the Banting diet. The Victorians were obsessed with different fad diets and quack medicines... they really aren't where you want to go for well researched and sourced diets.

Find me a scientifically based source that states why and how carbs are 'bad'. Everyone I've ever met who works research this regards these diets as nothing but quackery and a money making schemes (there is a lot of money in diet books and talks).

The first link you provided is a very good link and I completely agree with what it says about being balanced. You can't live entirely on carbs, protein or fats.

Also agree with what it says about carbs being:

the macronutrient that we need in the largest amounts. According to the Dietary Reference Intakes published by the USDA, 45% - 65% of calories should come from carbohydrate.

It also doesn't say anything about needing this to balanced out in one meal.

However, the second link you provided is a piece of pseudoscience nonsense. Reading up on the author it appears as though he is a journalist with no qualifications in biology or nutrition. His claims are most definitely not upheld by the scientific data.

There is no way around there are no calories that are 'worse' or 'better' than others. You get fatter or thinner based on what you take in versus what you use. If you are doing exercise and burn 500 calories... you don't burn more or less depending on what you had for dinner.

If you think about it, the obesity epidemic began around the same time that the low-fat diet craze began...when people started to think that eating fat meant you get fat.

Actually, I would argue that the obesity epidemic coincided with greater mechanisation and people no longer carrying out the same amount of physical exercise they did previously, along with greater access to what had previously been very expensive high calorie food.

There is a massive difference between regularly and 'only'. That is why I specified a balanced diet. Eating only carrot and tomato everyday isn't balanced.

It also depends on the salad. You can eat a different type of salad everyday and still manage to have a mixed and balanced diet.

Having a meal that is basically all carbs (and not even whole grain) is pretty much terrible for you.

Please state your source. What does it do that is bad for you?

I work with people who conduct research into human nutrition and diet and they agree that this is utter rubbish. There is enough fiber in the rest of that meal to balance out the pasta and there is nothing wrong with eating (non-fried) potatoes.

While I agree that it is important to have a balance diet, it only needs to balance out over the long term and not in one meal.... not even necessarily the same day.

The Atkins diet and the other weird food fads have a lot to answer for... carbohydrates are not bad for you! This is a perfectly healthy meal (assuming you don't have the same for every meal). If we've got to the point of complaining about the nutritional value of carrots and tomatoes we have lost sight of reality.

The 'best' diet is a balanced mixed diet and that doesn't mean having perfectly weighted out carb and protein portions for every meal. If your kid is eating salad of any kind regularly you should be pretty damn happy with yourself.

As a kid and I remember a diet where almost all proteins and fats were 'bad' and you were supposed to only eat carbohydrates being the 'in' thing. Hopefully the latest round of nuttery will go the same way and disappear as that diet did.

As a kid one of the saddest times was when we had to put down my cat. We dug a little grave in the back of the garden and my Dad who I had never seen cry before that day read a poem he had written (never seen him do that before or since either!) for the occasion.

While it was incredibly upsetting to lose my first best friend and the buddy that slept beside me every night, it was a revelation to see my Dad in such a new light.

It never fails to amaze me that people can be 'offended' by the depiction of something they can walk out in to a street and see.
