No, because they're using web standards, which Apple is touting, but not using.

Exactly. Chernobyl wasn't just a failure of the reactor core, it was a failure of everyone involved in its operation.

Sorry that I didn't make it clearer, but I was just trying to reinforce what ThePain said. Game demos may be a lot longer than movie trailers, but they still make up a similar chunk of the final content.

I totally agree that the dude from CryTek is out of his mind.

He says specifically that you don't get the same "luxury" in film, but movies have trailers. Take, for example, a 2:30 theatrical trailer for a 90-minute movie:

2.5/90 = 0.027 = 2% of the film

Then, consider demos for games. They vary a lot in length, so let's take a couple of examples:

Splinter Cell: 30-minute demo, 10-hour game

30/600 = 0.05 = 5% of the game

Just Cause 2: 30-minute demo, 90-hour game (for completion) Source: IGN

30/5400 = 0.005 = 0.5% of the game

Am I the only person who thinks that the Apache gunners in the Wikileaks video weren't entirely in the wrong? by onefingerattackin AskReddit

[–]natelong 19 points20 points ago

No, that's exactly what it is. Have you or do you know anyone who has been a part of such horrific circumstances? I have a friend who was a paramedic, and he used to tell me about the crazy jokes that they would make at victims' expense. It's not that they were heartless bastards--far from it. You have to find whatever way you can to cope, otherwise you lose it. Sure, that says something about the nature of their work, but it also says something about the nature of humanity. When you can't deal with what you're seeing, you find ways to distance yourself so that it doesn't seem real. Sometimes it goes too far--that much is obvious--but we have a responsibility to our troops to stop making judgments about their character through such a narrow window. There's more to the story, and we will probably never hear it. At the very least, you should be hoping that these soldiers received the proper counseling to reintegrate into their lives and move on, because they've sacrificed a bit of their humanity on the whim of their leaders.

What's that quote? We laugh to keep from crying?

IMHO, this provides for an interesting setup for self-made challenges. Try getting through the demo by sneaking past every group of guards. Is it possible? Don't kill anyone but the named guys you're after.

I don't know if it's possible, but it could be pretty fun.

Agreed on the pacing comparison. The Conviction demo showed that Ubisoft understands the give and take that makes for an appealing narrative.

Also, I apologize for my use of "methinks." It was egregious, and I'm sorry. :)

As pointed out by others in this thread, Sam was working for the government in the last game, and he really tapped into his self-control to maintain focus and get the job done. In this game, he's off that leash and is directing his energy at taking out anyone involved in his daughter's death. I don't see the disconnect. If anything, it makes perfect sense to me, and his new aggression only makes me appreciate how much the guy's going through.

Sam's "calm, collected, methodical" style hasn't changed in this game. Stealth, as well as psychological manipulation, still play a huge part. Mechanics like the mark and execute system ensure that Sam still adheres to the "hard and fast...[and] clean" style by ensuring that your terrible aim doesn't get in the way of a good, cinematic takedown.

While he may be angrier and more deadly, his style hasn't changed overall. I'll be the first to throw fit if there's a significant run 'n gun or rail shooting sequence in Conviction, but I have faith that Ubisoft has stayed more or less true to form.

It's actually a quote from one of the WikiLeaks people:

Julian Assange of WikiLeaks released the video at the National Press Club in Washington. He described the U.S. troops as callous and the shootings as "another day at the office."

"The behavior of the pilots is like they're playing a video game," said Assange. "It's like they want to get high-scores in that computer game."

Did you play the demo? You start off by beating a guy to a pulp in a bathroom for an interrogation. The story is that you're pissed because some dudes killed your daughter, and you're Sam Fisher. It totally makes sense that you're on a murderous rampage.

Comparing it to MW2 is a pretty over-the-top, methinks.

You know what? I don't trust for a second that it's only used for search. The next question you should ask me is whether or not I care. (hint: I don't)

Keeping your browsing habits private is a losing battle (with any browser and/or search provider), and it's arrogant to assume that anyone cares about your various fetishes.

A review of Code Ignitor for web apps by dupedupersonin programming

[–]natelong -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To preface this, CodeIgniter is my PHP framework of choice.

Here's a list of problems with this article:

  • It's CodeIgniter. Not CodeIgnitor or CodeIgnighter
  • CI didn't borrow the MVC architecture from RoR. MVC has been around for a really long time, and is a generally accepted method for separating a program into logical parts.
  • It's disingenuous to compare CI with Joomla and ExpressionEngine. They aren't CMS frameworks, they're full-blown CMSes. The closest you'll come in that territory is Drupal, and even that's a long way off. For a better comparison, look at CakePHP, Kohana, Zend, Symfony, Prado, etc.

Additional Notes:

  • The article mentions CI's weak model support, and other frameworks provide this. CakePHP may be a bit slower than CI, but it offers model relationships and whatnot.
  • The htaccess bit is sort of a pain in the ass for CI, especially since it doesn't come bundled with any sort of information on how to get this set up. There is an oft-visited page on the CI wiki for this though (it's the first page in Google for "codeigniter htaccess").
