A little knowledge is a dangerous thing by Blaaarghhin talesfromtechsupport

[–]narc0tiq 3 points4 points ago

Eep. Yeah, I see it now: 4 bytes per pixel, 2 million pixels per frame, 60 frames per second, makes for around 500 MB/s. That's pretty huge (USB 2.0 tops out at 60 MB/s).

I guess, with this information, the only thing the original tech missed was that it was a USB 3.0 device in the first place. Kind of makes me want to reconsider my upvote for this submission.

[–]narc0tiq 9 points10 points ago

I asked him how a USB 3.0 device was incapable of handling 1920x1080, this left him dumbfounded.

Did the same to me, the two are unrelated (except inasmuch as something that supports USB 3.0 has to be fairly recent). The rest of it... yeah.

[–]narc0tiq 3 points4 points ago

Oh, yeah, I was just comparing with my own toolset (Ubuntu, zsh) and contrasting. I will fully admit I've never had the pleasure of these other OSes.

EDIT: How about a short script or C app calling system('rm', '*')?

The most troublesome file names by mod_criticalin talesfromtechsupport

[–]narc0tiq 21 points22 points ago

Ah, the wonders of escaping:

[narc@ares /tmp/test]% touch \*
[narc@ares /tmp/test]% ls -l
total 0
-rw-rw-r-- 1 narc narc 0 May 23 16:14 *
[narc@ares /tmp/test]% rm \*

The backspace character one would be trickier, but zsh and its tab completion would still help there -- zsh gives me a tab completion of tet$'\b'st for a file with the backspace character (^H) in it.

I've threatened computers before, just as part of normal troubleshooting. I also occasionally praise my computers for doing their job without complaining, especially the particularly long and difficult jobs that sometimes crop up.

I attribute my lack of hardware issues to buying good hardware and this.

Eh, it's a thread asking people to bitch about customers' bad behaviours. I really don't think it's terribly polite to berate people for doing just that.

I've seen the same, but I prefer to be polite anyway -- it doesn't cost me anything, and once in a while I'll make someone's day a little brighter. Also, smile. It adds up.

Yes, but can you follow instructions? That's apparently the worst part about the people calling in to tech support (based on a month or so of anecdotes from /r/talesfromtechsupport).

To click or not to click. by artificialityin talesfromtechsupport

[–]narc0tiq 2 points3 points ago

I thought this was going to be about the bad customer archetype whose favorite phrases are: "Do you want me to click [something] now?" and "It's telling me to click [something], should I do that?".

I was only a little disappointed to find out it wasn't.

"Literally" doesn't mean "exactly", it means "without exaggeration" (in the sense used here). We could rephrase to "I remember when IE had about a 98% market share -- I'm not exaggerating, either, it was everywhere."

To be fair, I'd prefer my phrasing over muoncat's, but I can live with his/hers.

The idea that she was establishing a connection to computers in other geographical locations. She was amazed.

I'm a jaded internet person but I still get excited about networking, especially the Internet. The way most of the time everything just completely works, in fractions of a second (significant fractions, but still just fractions) is a testament to the ingenuity of everyone who created this technology.

Relatedly, I remember pulling some things apart as a young boy and marvelling at the ingenuity involved in, e.g. the gear assemblies that open the tray on a CD-ROM drive. Engineering is awesome.

Aye, but the tale explicitly states "[the] projector wasn't working". And it's true!

Got a call that a USB Docking Station Wasn't Working by DZ84in talesfromtechsupport

[–]narc0tiq 2 points3 points ago

Sure. I see it most often on scanners and printers nowadays -- see the wikipedia article for pictures. There's also mini- and micro-USB and I can never remember which is which. I think micro-USB is the thinner/wider one, though.

Edit: Oh, hell, look at that, that's just ridiculous. But at least now I know the non-standard ones I see most often are mini-USB A and micro-USB B. At least, I think so.

EditEdit: Though according to this picture's caption, it's actually mini-B. ...Yeah.

You're thinking of cymbals -- symbols are representations, cymbals are objects which are part of a drum set. And yes, the two words sound identical. Gotta love English.
