The laws weren't ridiculous. They worked. Linguistic decline has been halted in Quebec.

Heading to Toronto next week, is there anything to do other than CN Tower and Niagara Falls? by towel106in AskReddit

[–]na_confederation 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you've never been to Niagara Falls it is worth a trip to see it but there's nothing worthwhile there except maybe the casinos if you like the gamblin'. CN Tower is ok to look at at night from somewhere else with the light display giant lava lamp thing.

Best bet is to go out to a fun neighbourhood:

Little Portugal: College and Dundas between Lansdowne and Ossington

Ossington: http://www.torontolife.com/features/block-ossington/

Koreatown: Bloor St between Christie and Bathurst

Toronto Island: especially Ward's Island instead of Centre Island (Ward's is awesome, Centre Island is just an ok park).

Leslieville: http://www.blogto.com/leslieville, http://www.torontolife.com/features/leslieville-guide/ (Queen East between Carlaw and Coxwell)

Parkdale: http://www.torontolife.com/features/block-parkdale/, http://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2010/05/toronto_patio_guide_parkdale/

West Queen West (Queen West between Trinity Bellwoods Park and Dufferin)

Liberty Village: http://www.torontolife.com/features/block-liberty-village/

Distillary District, St Lawrence Market neighbourhood, etc.

Nuit Blanche takes place Oct 2: http://www.scotiabanknuitblanche.ca

Aida is being staged by the Cdn Opera Company starting Oct 2

The Bloor Cinema is a fun place to take in a movie, try the old-school balcony

If you have time drive up to Algonquin Park, rent a canoe or hike a trail somewhere off highway 60. If you like the outdoors get fitted out and head into the back-country for a couple of days.

Imagine an Ireland where they could still do it half the time when their vote dropped to the mid-thirties and you had to vote for a single opposition party you hated as well to even have a chance of a change. ;-)

I will agree with your point though. Definitely.

Anyone here from Fredericton? I may be moving there and would like some advice. by AgentConundrumin canada

Visited a few times. Hiking trails are accessible and awesome.

Try to live within walking distance of Boyce Farmers' Market. It will improve your quality of life. You rent a good chunk of an awesome house in Fredericton for the same price as a Kingston apartment.

It is a small city. Adjust your nightlife expectations. Kingston has Queen's and you can get to Montreal and Toronto easily.

Imagine an Ireland where Fianna Fáil's ~40% of the vote allowed them to have unlimited power and do whatever they want with no checks or balances - despite the majority of the country voting for other parties.

I'd take STV. You have more checks on power than we do.

The Rhino party would not achieve a seat in any voting system Canada would conceivably switch to.

With MMP in particular countries often use a "minimum threshold" to exclude fringe parties. In Germany and NZ parties must achieve at least 5% of the national vote to be eligible for seats.

Every single country in Europe - if you include MMP and similar systems (proportional representation).

I do the same. I have voted green for 10 years running now. But more because I want a centrist government but can never bring myself to vote Liberal. They are the biggest party that will not win. I will protest vote my life away if have to. The party I want to vote for doesn't exist.

In the presence of a fair voting system there would probably be additional choices. There may be a European-style "classical liberal" party that believes in free-market economics and maximum personal freedom. These Economist-subscribers were probably Red Tories or "Paul Martin Liberals" in FPTP-Canada but could now band together. Think the German Free Democrats or (not quite) the UK's Lib Dems.

The Liberals are not a cohesive entity where you can pin every member with a easy-to-define set of beliefs. They are a very broad tent party. Basically the party of: I want a (real) seat at the table. In a fair system people would have more choice than I guess I'll vote for the Liberals to be centrist.

There is a big centre-right / centre-centre population in Canada.

The fact that you can find a (single) negative example is fairly meaningless

..and illustrative that it is not proportional representation that is the problem in Italy.

Yes there is Italy that uses proportional representation and all the rest of the democracies that use first-past-the-post. Any attempt to move to PR will turn us into Italy.

Good point.

Some small power to a small party. Or unlimited power to a minority party. Which is better?

Italy only recently switched to MMP. Other countries using MMP include Sweden, Scotland, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Austria. MMP or other proportional systems are used in most modern democracies.

Any reason you mention only Italy? Might Italy have other problems? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangentopoli

100% the Liberals fault. They could have brought in a fair voting system almost at will anytime in the last century. Did they? No. Why? Because they wanted it all for ever.
