Your buddy seemed to be saying that scratch golfers try the mini tours and then realise they're not good enough to compete at that level. I'm saying that I'm surprised that scratch players even think they might be good enough to play those tours.

Scratch is nowhere near good enough to make it on any sort of tour, I would have thought. The likes of Rory and Sergio were something like plus 5 when they turned pro and although that's probably the exception, shooting level par on a good day is never going to make it.
