Belgian weather man Frank Deboosere sets up a One Billion Seconds clock which will run for over 32 years, to illustrate the incomprehensible vastness of large numbers. by josbosin science

[–]movingon11 0 points1 point ago

I very much dislike when people suggest that big numbers or things on universal scales are "incomprehensible". I can easily comprehend a billion, and I have no problem comprehending the distances present in space. We should spend more time patting ourselves on the back for comprehending as much as we do, rather than insulting ourselves with what amounts to a lie.

For example.

"You can't comprehend a billion, it's an incomprehensibly large number!"

"1,000,000,000. It's a thousand millions, which is a thousand thousands, which is a thousand hundreds, which is a hundred ones. Suck it."

This kind of luddite thinking when it comes to what we really know is counterproductive and silly. Yes, if we count to a billion one second at a time, it will take a long time. I can count to a billion with a computer that makes a trillion calculations a second, and thus do so in less than one second.

There is nothing incomprehensible about large numbers. This is a silly way of making people feel small.

Is there any potential for a 3rd party to gain traction in the U.S., or are we sitting ducks for the plutocrats? by bobcat_08in politics

When there is no legal channel for that money to enter their pockets, there is no influence.

Publicly funded elections, alternative voting, and zero outside contributions allowed in politics means that a multi-billion dollar corporation has exactly as much of a voice as a guy making $7.50 an hour down the street.

The answer to corruption is to drive a legal wall between corporate money and government, and then to enforce that legal wall with prejudice. It isn't to introduce more parties.

However, AV would certainly allow the public's actual preference to come to the front more often - which is a start.

That's not really the point. You're still thinking that the Democratic party has god powers over every member, and likewise for Republicans. That is not the case. Yes, people align one way or the other in elections, but how often does Bernie Sanders disagree with his more conservative counterparts? How many times have Kucinich's political aims been sidelined?

American political parties are not political parties in the same way a European political party is a political party. American political parties are coerced coalitions, with identifiable political bodies inside of them. It isn't necessary to add a third party to the mix, as we already have plenty.

I'll try to explain this as best I can. We already have a multi-party system in America, and if Britain or Germany were as politically polarized as we are today, you would quickly see two competing political blocs show up and fight in a similar fashion.

The Republican Party is not one monolithic entity. There are various groups inside of it with their own agenda, and can (politically speaking) be considered to have their own identity separate from Republicans at large. Democrats have similar groups. Think the Tea Party caucus, Progressive caucus, "Blue Dog" Democrats, establishment Republicans, etc. In the past, these groups would make law by working with "opposing" groups from the other party. Today, it just can't work like that because the rhetoric being thrown around makes it impossible.

Yes, we only have two parties. No, we do not only have two parties making law. It's important to remember, and it's even more important to remember that the two parties are not the same, no matter how many times it is repeated here or elsewhere.

A useful dictator isn't as useful as a friendly democracy. Think a little deeper and you'll see why it's in America's interests to have democratic states in an alliance of choice, rather than a network of dictators in an alliance of force.

You're being dense on purpose.

I don't care what social values they have. I care that there is a political party actively working to impose a theocratic system over a democratic one. Trying to characterize me as some kind of moral crusader is retarded. Look through my post history if you think you must.

Any other talking point riddled arguments you'd like to make?

You are engaging in democratic relativism, which is a strange form of impossible. Yes, it sounds very nice on paper that we do not try and enforce our values on another country, but shariah is quite incompatible with actual democracy.

Basically, it boils down to this. Yes, we shouldn't enforce our values on another country. No, we should not necessarily be all happy and supportive when a minority of religious zealots hijacks democracy and dismantles it.

I understand what you're saying in the post, though. Wasn't trying to call you a racist, just pointing it out ;)

There are very good reasons to be completely against allowing anti-democratic parties with anti-democratic platforms in any democracy. A nascent constitution will not survive the overwhelming tide of theocracy, for obvious reasons.

Freedom of speech is all well and fine, until someone takes it away because they think God wills it.

They don't prevent forced unionization. You already have the choice in non-right-to-work states of working for a non-union employer. What they do is bust unions that are already established in a workplace. It's that simple. Any other explanation is disingenuous and bordering on outright dishonest.

They tried that in 2008 and 2009. It didn't go over well. Now the internet racist birther brigade just points out, every chance they get, that Barack isn't white. Dress it up with whatever political ideology you want, make it sound as legitimate as you want, I don't care. I see right through it, every time. You should too.

Voter ID laws are an impediment to liberty in the current system. This is anathema to a true libertarian. It is clear to anyone without an agenda that these laws are not meant to stop voter fraud, they are meant to disenfranchise certain voting groups.

I think it's just another way to point out that Barack Obama is different. Like, in the not really American way.

Seriously, r/libertarian, this is the kind of bullshit that makes me believe not a single one of you is an actual libertarian. Bunch of racists upvoting racist shit? Unsurprising. Sickening, stupid, and unsurprising. I see something like this every week here, and it's just so much stupid.
