Any L.A. Grunge bands want to play the Whisky A Go Go? by Pandafartin grunge

What is the pre-sale requirement for these shows?

Drummer wanted to play gig in L.A. by LadyBluesin drums

[–]mouseyd 7 points8 points ago

As a musician in LA, I want to warn you to please please please first check with the promoter to find out if you need to pre-sell tickets or 'pay-to-play' for this show. Typically the venues on the Sunset strip (Whiskey, Roxy...) will require bands to sell dozens of tickets at $15-$20 a piece, and pay the difference yourself if you do not. This money you pay IS NOT WORTH IT. Playing at the Whiskey on a Monday or Wednesday night with other 'pay to play' bands gets you zero exposure. These venues have a racket going the preys on bands that are inexperienced in the LA scene.

I remember this show. My sister and I sometimes break out into the theme song for no reason.

I found some interesting info on how our metabolisms don't have to slow down as we age. by i_am_newmein xxfitness

[–]mouseyd 0 points1 point ago

Obviously it is better to be in shape throughout your life. This article essentially says that your body has the same capacity for fitness regardless of age, which is medically untrue. As we age, our hormones change and it is physiologically more difficult to build muscle.

I'm not making excuses for not staying in shape as you age. I'm pointing out that this article is oversimplifying something that is pretty complicated.

I'm not a doctor, but I did work for one who specialized in aging and the endocrine system, and I have to say that it is more complicated than this. Of course, many people become fatter as they get older as a result of lifestyle changes, but it is harder to build muscle as you get older due to hormonal changes.

When I was five, my friend threw up her lunch of Spaghetti-Os all over the playground. The vomit looked and smelled exactly like Spaghetti-Os straight out of the can.

I'm not convinced Spaghetti-Os AREN'T vomit.

I was seriously underwhelmed by Langer's. Izzy's in Santa Monica, Canter's and The Hat are all great, and I'd probably rate them in that order.

So I guess my scars and I are just going to have to learn to live together. by ejchristian86in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mouseyd 6 points7 points ago

That's not necessarily true. I have scars that have been tattooed over and the ink is still holding strong.

What the truth is that because all scars are different, it's hard to tell how the ink will look over the tissue. It may not be "perfect" (ie the color may "bleed" (look kind of fuzzy, if it is line-work) or look more faded) but a good artist can design around it.

Just got my third tattoo a few weeks ago and now the lines are suddenly raised and kind of itchy...is this normal? by racattackin tattoos

[–]mouseyd 0 points1 point ago

Did you happen to get any sun inadvertently? My tattoo is over a year old and one color/section gets raised and sore/itchy if it gets too much sun (it's on my left arm so if I'm in the car too long without sunscreen that'll happen).

I run with an arm band and have no audio cues. Checking distance is not very difficult, especially since it is normally the largest number on the screen.

TwoX, can you help me convince my little sister to start reading? by stormy_the_rabbitin TwoXChromosomes

[–]mouseyd 0 points1 point ago

My sister had trouble "getting into reading" as a child, I think just because she was a slow reader. After trying Hooked On Phonics type programs that she grew bored with and didn't adhere to, my dad started reading chapter books with her every night. She's all grown up, graduating college tomorrow (as a science major) and is an avid reader.

I really think taking her to a book store, letting her choose a book and making a "sister reading time" would help. You could maybe switch off chapters so she doesn't feel like a little kid. The best way to get better at something is to practice.

I recently purchased a used copy of Island of the Blue Dolphin at a library book sale simply to support summer literacy programs. If you think she'll enjoy it, send me a PM.

Blipsy's Barcade in K-town. When I went a few years ago a lot of the games were broken but from Yelp reviews and word of mouth it sounds like they've gotten better at maintaining the place.

When people would say "prima donna," I used to think they were saying "pre-Madonna". What words or phrases did you mishear as a kid? by meatwad75892in AskReddit

I thought it was 'brahtude by" (I have no idea what that was supposed to mean) and didn't realize the actual phrase until I was much older than I'd like to admit.

Local dad took his disabled daughter to her senior prom. Dad of the year right here. by FishyJoeJrin pics

[–]mouseyd 1 point2 points ago

Yeah... I'm pretty sure my dad would have taken me to prom if I wanted him to, and I'm not even (very) disabled (I think).

My dad has done much more difficult things for me than take me to a high school dance.

Week3 P90X- Feeling frustrated by hu8ji9ko0in P90X

[–]mouseyd 1 point2 points ago

There's a lot of good advice here but I wanted to address one thing: stop comparing yourself to others. That's the best way to get discouraged about fitness. There will always be someone better than you, so just put in all you can and compare your improvement to yourself. The new you may not be better than your friend, but she'll sure as hell be better than the old you.

I totally feel ya on the boyfriend thing. I'm 5'2" and beau is 6'3", so our BMRs are totally different. I'll serve myself a lot less dinner, or nix the bread on my plate or something, and he goes, "oh, you're not going to eat the same thing as me? It makes me feel like a fatty." Seriously? I would LOVE to eat that bread but you have 800 more calories per day to use than I do!

just realized a HUGE error I made on my master's thesis... so let's hear 'em ladies, biggest mistakes in your academic career by babycatcherin TwoXChromosomes

[–]mouseyd 2 points3 points ago

I know this isn't even comparable to messing up your thesis, but in 6th grade I had the wrong date in my head for when our science projects were due, and found out when I got to school and everyone was carrying their three panel displays to class. I have always been a HUGE procrastinator and hadn't even started mine yet.

Luckily, there was no way we could get through all of the presentations in one day, and my name was not called the first day. I went home and put together a jar with molasses, oil and water and threw some bullshit on a poster board. The next day I slipped my project in with the rest and the teacher was none the wiser! I still can't believe I got away with that.

I have tattoos on the back of my calves as well. What I like most about them now, after having them for a few years, is that I rarely even think about them being there but I'll get a glimpse in the mirror or something every once in a whole and go, "Oh yeah! Those look awesome!"

I'm a woman, I don't want to get married, so what? by HelloColeyin TwoXChromosomes

[–]mouseyd 1 point2 points ago

You know that movie The Five Year Engagement? I actually don't know anything about it, but I have it beat.

I met my partner in 2004 and he proposed on our 1 year anniversary. We were still in school and the wedding was obviously going to happen after we graduated, so I didn't worry about planning it or anything for quite a while. After graduating in 2006, we moved and were poor and just living. Sure, we'd get married... When we could afford it and the time was right. Then we could afford it but we had other things going on. And the years passed by and here we are, 7 years into our engagement.

We live together, we share a bank account, we have joint insurance, etc etc. I don't see how marriage will change our relationship. Everyone always asks us when we are going to get married and really, I just don't know. We really should, if only for tax reasons, but I just can't bring myself to spend a bunch of money on a party and a pretty dress. Why not just go to the courthouse? Because part of me really wants a party and a pretty dress. I just have no interest in actually planning it and I'm happy with the way things are. I love him, I want children with him, I just don't really care that much about marriage.

He recently brought up that other people think I have cold feet or something because we haven't gotten married yet. That really never occurred to me until he said it. If someone was like, "hey we're going to pay for an awesome wedding, just how you want it!" I'd walk down the aisle no problem.

I guess I'm just saying that I understand where you are coming from. There is so much pressure to get married to add some sort of meaning to your relationship, but I feel like I already have it all. At this point the certificate is a legal technicality that I guess we'll have to get around to, sooner or later.
